I looked at my schedule.First period-German.Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces. Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period-biology.Our biology teacher is Ms Campeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying be quiet;she says"alligator." She explained that she is the king,or should I say queen,of the class because alligators are the king of the swamps(沼泽).” My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge,I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything.Mr Valassidis,my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year.I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS and AP-level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused.Last year was not a very "focused" year for me.While doing homework,I was often talking on the phone,or busy with a conversation online.I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honour student. 24.What did the author mainly write about in this passage? Research now shows that microfibers(could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea. Dr.Mark Browne in Santa Barbara,California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic (clothes go into a washing machine,a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea. In 2011,Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash.Browne collected samples (from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons.Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten.Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants. Based on this evidence,it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental "solution."Even though the science has been around for a while,Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support "Benign by Design,"his research project, which is trying to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market,Browne didn't get a satisfying answer.Only one woman's clothing company,Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding. 28.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.Recycled plastic clothing:solution or pollution? B.The impact of microfibers on the sea. C.Environmental protection:moving forward or backward? D.Turning plastic into clothing,a new step in environmental protection. D A medical breakthrough in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries 损伤).Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip(芯片)that allows paralyzed(瘫痪的)patients to move their legs, and even walk again. The chip, only 1 mm wide,is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord.If the natural communication between the brain and muscles is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles. The results have been amazing.A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation on January 8,2025.Two weeks later,he walked five meters with help.Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks.Even though the patients'nervous systems were damaged, the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China's progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China. "This is just the beginning,"Jia,the lead researcher, says."With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training." Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up.Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction. As the chip continues to improve,it lights a new path forward-one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future. 第6页/共11页 32.What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage?
