Hi Leila,
How are you? What’s the weather like in the UK? Here in Iran it’s quite warm and sunny, as it’s nearly spring.
As you know, it’s the Persian New Year celebration, Nowruz, very soon. We’re busy getting everything ready. What about you? Are you and the family over there in the UK preparing for Nowruz too? The celebrations last for 13 days in Iran!
Your grandmother and I have cleaned our house from top to bottom and decorated it with lots of flowers. It was hard work but it’s important to start the new year fresh and clean.
Yesterday we went shopping for new clothes. I bought some new trousers and a shirt. New clothes mean a fresh start for next year! What new clothes are you going to wear for Nowruz?
Tomorrow’s the last Wednesday before Nowruz. It’s a special day here when people light bonfires in the street and jump over them! It’s noisy too, as the children bang on pots and pans. They knock on doors and ask for sweets.

I’m sure you know that we put seven special objects on the haft seen, all beginning with the sound ‘s’ in the Farsi language. The objects have special meanings and they represent what we hope for in the new year. Apples (seeb) are for health and beauty. What are you going to put on your haft seen table? Do you know the words in Farsi?
All of your cousins, aunts and uncles are going to come to celebrate with us. The new year starts at the exact moment when winter changes to spring. That’s when we give each other presents.
We all wish you could be here to celebrate Nowruz with us. Maybe next year!
Happy Nowruz!
Love from your grandfather, Baba borzog

When Oliver arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled (挣扎) to start breathing.
Oliver fought his first battle without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver’s survival.
However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced his arrival by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face and whispered, “Let me see it.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. He gave her the child. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, fell back and died.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The mother was a good—looking girl. Where did she come from?”
“She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl’s left hand. “The old story.” He shook his head. No wedding ring. I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. He was then sent to a special “baby farm” nearby. There, he and thirty other children rolled (翻) around the floor all day, without the convenience of too much food or too much clothing. Mrs. Mann, who “looked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children. She also knew what was good for herself. The board (董事会) responsible for the orphans (孤儿) sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent Mr. Bumble, a kind local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board came, of course, the children were always neat and clean.
On Oliver’s ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble came to see Mrs. Mann. Through the front window, Mrs. Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.
“Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!” she said. Then she ran to unlock the gate which was always kept locked.

What Is AI and How Does It Change Our Lives?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, is not just a popular term in movies—it’s a real technology that’s changing how we live, work, and learn. Unlike traditional machines that only follow fixed rules, AI systems can “learn” from data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This ability makes AI different from ordinary tools and gives it huge potential to shape our future.
AI is already around us in many ways. When you ask a smart speaker for the weather, or when a phone app suggests songs you might like, you’re using AI. In schools, some teachers use AI tools to check students’ homework quickly and even give personal feedback to help slow learners catch up. In hospitals, AI can analyze medical scans (like X-rays) to find small signs of illness that human eyes might miss, helping doctors make better treatment plans.
However, AI also brings challenges. One big worry is job changes: as AI gets better at tasks like factory work or data entry, some jobs may disappear. Another problem is privacy—AI systems need lots of data to learn, and if this data includes personal information (like our phone records or online habits), it could be misused. For example, some companies might use AI to track people’s behavior without their permission.
To deal with these challenges, countries around the world are making rules for AI use. These rules aim to keep AI safe and fair: they stop AI from being used to harm people, protect personal data, and make sure AI creates more jobs than it takes away. Many experts also believe that students today should learn about AI, not just to use it, but to understand how it works—this will help them prepare for a world where AI is everywhere.
AI is not perfect, but it’s clear that it will play a bigger role in our lives. By using it wisely and solving its problems, we can make AI a tool that helps humans, not replaces them.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了来自浙江的29岁手工艺人邵路杰及其盘纸艺术。
【详解】56.推理判断题。根据第二段“It is a form of art that uses long thin strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create artworks.”可知,盘纸艺术需要将细长纸条卷起来、塑形并粘贴在一起才能创作出艺术品;据此可以推断,完成一件盘纸艺术品需要多个步骤。故选D。
57.推理判断题。根据第一段“Shao Lujie, a 29-year-old craftsman from Zhejiang, created them.”可知,现在是2024年,他29岁;又根据第三段“Shao started his own business after a three-year apprenticeship when he was 23.”可知,他开始创业时23岁;据此可以推断,从创业到现在经过的年数为29-23=6年;如果以2024年为现在的时间,那么往前推6年,2024-6 = 2018年,所以他是在2018年开始创业的。故选B。

After learning about the “Five-Hour Rule”, I’m truly inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s wisdom. His words teach us that active involvement is the key to real learning.
In the “Five-Hour Rule”, setting learning goals helped me a lot. Last term, my English vocabulary was poor. Instead of aimlessly reciting words, I set a clear goal: memorize 15 new words every weekday. I wrote them down in a notebook and reviewed them every morning. Gradually, I could understand more passages in reading and use more words in writing.
I also want to try “reflecting on what I’ve learned”. Spending 10 minutes each day reviewing what I’ve learned will help me avoid mistakes and build a clearer knowledge system.
Active learning turns lessons into progress, and that’s what Franklin’s wisdom is all about.

From: Baba borzog [Grandpa]
Subject: Happy Nowruz!
Hi Leila,
How are you?
Are you learning all about Nowruz and the haft seen table at Persian school?

52.Which example shows AI being used to help with medical work?
A.A smart speaker telling patients the time.
B.An app suggesting healthy food to eat.
C.AI analyzing X-rays to find signs of illness.
D.AI checking students’ medical homework.
53.What is one main challenge AI brings, according to the passage?
A.AI can’t learn from enough data.
B.AI may take away some people’s jobs.
C.AI makes traditional machines useless.
D.AI is too hard for people to use.
54.Why do countries make rules for AI use?
A.To stop people from using AI in daily life.
B.To make sure AI is safe and used fairly.
C.To let AI take over all human jobs.
D.To collect more personal data for AI companies.
55.What is the author’s attitude towards AI in the passage?
A.AI is perfect and will replace humans soon.
B.AI has problems, but it can be a helpful tool if used wisely.
C.AI is too dangerous and should be stopped.
D.AI is useless for daily life and work.

From: Baba borzog [Grandpa]
Subject: Happy Nowruz!
Hi Leila,
How are you?
Are you learning all about Nowruz and the haft seen table at Persian school?
