UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity includes a rich variety of traditions. In December 2025, four more elements joined the list.
Hezhen Yimakan storytelling
Hezhen Yimakan storytelling is an oral tradition of the Hezhen ethnic group in northeast China. Narrated in the Hezhen language with a mix of prose and verse, it tells of history, heroism, and fishing-hunting life. What makes it remarkable is that its safeguarding programme was also selected for UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices — the first time an element has achieved both a transfer and an inscription on that register at the same time.
Deepavali
Deepavali, or Diwali, is India’s festival of lights, celebrated on the new moon in October or November. Families clean their houses and decorate doorways with colourful patterns to welcome good fortune. People light oil lamps, set off fireworks, exchange sweet treats with relatives, and pray for prosperity. The festival strengthens family and community ties across generations, promoting kindness, hope and mutual respect among neighbours.
Swiss yodelling
Swiss yodelling, originally used by Alpine shepherds to communicate across wide mountain valleys, features rapid pitch changes between chest and head voices. In old days, shepherds used its unique tones to call their cattle and pass simple messages over long distances. Today, it is widely performed in choirs, local gatherings and folk festivals, symbolizing Swiss Alpine identity and keeping the mountain-living people’s ancient lifestyle alive
Italian cuisine
Italian cuisine is not just about dishes; it covers the entire food culture — from preparation to sharing. Local seasonal ingredients are highly valued in daily cooking. Passed down orally through generations within families, it reflects core values of hospitality, festivity, and respect for local agriculture. Family members often gather to cook and enjoy meals together, viewing food as a bond connecting relatives and friends.
21.What is special about Hezhen Yimakan storytelling?
A.It is performed mainly for local fishermen.
B.It describes ancient European history.
C.It uses only written Hezhen language.
D.It gains two UNESCO recognitions together.
22.Which activity will people NOT do during Deepavali?
A.Exchanging oil lamps. B.Doing some decoration work.
C.Letting off fireworks. D.Sharing delicious food.
23.What do Swiss yodelling and Italian cuisine have in common?
A.They have roots in ancient religious events.
B.They value local traditional lifestyles.
C.They are mainly carried out in large choirs.
D.They centre on seasonal food materials.

Every morning at 5 a.m. when most people are asleep, a single figure would be busy in the kitchen, cooking meals for the needy folks of Singapore until the rest of the volunteers and the four full-time cooks arrive. Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.
During one of his visits to collect vegetables and distribute them to a less-privileged neighbourhood, his wife noticed that the elderly folk did not take the vegetables. When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.
Since the organization’s early days, volunteers have learned how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, gain greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, build strong bonds with one another. Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to expose the younger generation to the country’s backyard, to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors. This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to foster unity within their own families. His best gift during the course of this journey is seeing how younger volunteers help and feed the less privileged. One volunteer, he proudly tells us, has been inspired to start his own programme to help the needy.
As a non-profit organization, Willing Hearts relies heavily on donations and food collections. Although the volunteers at Willing Hearts may be a small and irregular group, they are always on the lookout for the poor to extend their assistance to them.
24.What inspired Tony Tay and his wife to start Willing Hearts?
A.The need to raise money for the poor. B.The lack of volunteers in Singapore.
C.An old woman’s difficulty in cooking. D.Their dream of becoming full-time cooks.
25.What does the underlined word “backyard” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.The garden behind a house. B.The hidden social problems.
C.The kitchen where food is prepared. D.The volunteer team of Willing Hearts.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Tony Tay?
A.Devoted and inspiring. B.Humorous and creative.
C.Organized and easy-going. D.Knowledgeable and modest.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Tony Tay: A Cook for the Elderly Folks
B.Volunteers: Serving Local Communities
C.Younger Generation: Caring for the Elderly
D.Willing Hearts: Bringing Kindness to the Needy
C
Record-breaking heat and humidity (湿度) are already upon us at the start of an extremely hot summer. Our cities, with blacktop surfaces, polluting vehicles, and heat-trapping buildings, feel these temperatures the most. These high temperatures radiate sharply in contrast to surrounding suburbs on a thermal satellite map, earning the phenomenon its name: the Heat Island Effect.
The Heat Island Effect can be a helpful reference point, scientists say. It raises awareness about urban heat, but experts say the phenomenon can put too much emphasis on ground temperature, rather than the ways those temperatures affect people. High temperatures have been linked to severe health issues. Scientists and architects have begun to search for protections. What’s emerged is a combination of green spaces, architectural innovations, and technological advancement that might help cities find relief.
These efforts require precision or they can backfire. No two cities are the same, and their reasons for absorbing heat are also not the same. Heat poses different problems for different cities: for some it’s a long-term condition, while in others it’s a severe disaster. Adopting the wrong strategies can be wasteful and even harmful.
Sydney and Dubai overheat because they are close to the desert. In these contexts, reflective surfaces can block solar radiation, lowering temperatures. By contrast, Athens’s heat comes from its dense (密集的) planning and the blockage of airflow. In Athens the priority is ventilation (通风): cooling rooftops with greenery and reflective materials. That pulls heavier, denser air down into the streets, drawing sea winds through the city and sweeping the heat out.
Another way to cool down a city is to introduce plants. Medellin, Colombia, invested millions of dollars in “green passages” to fight the heat island effect. As of 2023, Medellin has lowered its average urban temperature by 2°C. Considering the species of tree before planting is vital, testing if it can withstand the climate and where its shade would be most effective. For example, a tree planted in a parking lot is much less valuable than one planted in a playground.
28.What is a hidden weakness of the Heat Island Effect concept?
A.It lacks clear satellite evidence.
B.It ignores heat’s harm to humans.
C.It fails to explain suburban cooling.
D.It overlooks urban building structures.
29.Why do cooling solutions differ greatly among cities according to the text?
A.They face different natural disasters. B.Their technical budgets are unequal.
C.Their local heat sources vary widely. D.Their green coverage differs sharply.
30.What can be inferred about tree planting from the last paragraph?
A.Larger trees provide better cooling.
B.Parking lots require more native trees.
C.Green spaces may replace other methods.
D.Location and species determine its success.
31.What is the main message the author wants to convey?
A.Urban heat island effect is worsening globally.
B.Green spaces are the ultimate way to cool cities.
C.Addressing city heat demands customized solutions.
D.Ground temperatures reflect real risks to human health.

Most people rely on digital reminders daily. Smartphones, smartwatches and calendar alerts help us remember appointments and deadlines, cutting the mental work of tracking future plans. Psychologists call this strategy cognitive (认知的) offloading — shifting part of the brain’s workload to outside aids. Previous research has shown that reminders boost short-term performance, but much less is known about whether they influence our ability to remember independently.
In order to investigate whether reminders simply provide temporary assistance or whether they also change the learning processes that normally strengthen prospective memory — the ability to remember to carry out intended actions later, the research team, led by Craig Fellers from the University of California, Santa Cruz, conducted two online experiments.
In the first experiment, participants completed an ongoing word task while remembering two prospective memory tasks. In one condition, participants remembered both tasks using their own memory. In the offloading condition, one of the memory tasks was supported by a highly noticeable reminder displayed in bold(粗体) text, while the other had to be remembered internally. After the first stage, all participants redid the task with no reminders. A second experiment was carried out to confirm the results.
As expected, reminders greatly improved performance while available. Participants almost never forgot the task supported by the reminder. However, the researchers found no evidence that removing one memory burden allowed participants to perform better on the other memory task they still had to remember by themselves. In fact, in the second experiment, when the reminders were made even more explicit, performance on the non-offloaded memory task actually worsened.
While reminders can be a powerful tool for ensuring immediate task completion, they are not cognitively neutral. They can gradually weaken the essential practice that helps us form lasting memory skills we rely on ourselves to use.
The researchers caution that the study was conducted online using university students, so the results may not fully reflect how people use reminder apps in everyday life. They also examined relatively short-term memory performance, leaving open the question of whether long-term reliance on digital reminders produces similar effects.
32.What remains a puzzle about reminders according to paragraph 1?
A.Their burden on smart devices. B.Their role in cutting mental stress.
C.Their application in daily appointments. D.Their influence on independent memory.
33.What does the underlined word “explicit” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Reasonable. B.Reliable C.Obvious. D.Restricted.
34.What message do the experiments mainly convey?
A.External aids guarantee reliable memory.
B.Memory burdens can almost be removed.
C.Reminders may harm inner-memory skills.
D.More reminders ensure better task outputs.
35.Why are the study’s limitations mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To prove short-term tests’ unreliability.
B.To show its incomplete research evidence.
C.To criticize online student-based research.
D.To stress its narrow real-world application.

Tom had just graduated from university when he took over his family’s long-established restaurant. His father, now in his seventies, had run the place for decades but never offered delivery — there wasn’t enough help, and he was too tired. Wanting to bring something new while keeping the old spirit, Tom started a free delivery service for the elderly and busy neighbours.
As he looked for delivery riders, one person came to mind: Mike, his deaf neighbour who stayed home making small crafts. Jobs were hard to find for Mike, and Tom knew he needed steady work. He went to Mike’s house and showed him a note: “Come work with me. Be my delivery rider. Good pay.” Mike read it, eyes wide, then nodded firmly.
The first day he worked, Mike checked each order twice before leaving. He’d already spent days studying the neighbourhood map and cycling around to learn the quickest routes. But problems came quickly. On his last delivery that evening, he knocked loudly on a customer’s door — trying to get attention without speaking. The resident complained about the noise and rudeness.
Later that week, while biking through the market, a hurried pedestrian stepped into his path. Mike fell, and the food spilled. Unable to explain, he rushed back for a new meal. By the time he arrived — nearly 40 minutes late — the customer was very angry. He refused the food and shouted at Mike, who could only stand there, silent and helpless.
That evening, Mike sat alone, head down, feeling he’d let Tom down. When Tom knew what happened, his heart sank — not with anger, but with guilt. He’d wanted to help, yet never truly thought about Mike’s challenges: the silence, the misunderstandings, the moments when being unable to speak left him defenseless. Tom knew he had to do more than offer a job — he needed to help Mike do well.

My Pick of the Clubs
Dear freshmen, welcome to high school!
If you want to enrich your high‑school life, I strongly recommend three clubs for Grade 10 students, whose order is Volunteer Association, Art Club and Debate Club.
I put Volunteer Association first because it lets us offer help to people who are in need. It teaches us that small actions can bring warmth to the whole society. Next comes Art Club. Here you can relax yourself after busy study. The last is Debate Club, which improves your logical thinking and public speaking skills. Choose the one that fits you best and enjoy your club time.
He soon came up with a plan to help Mike. Tom prepared a set of small cards explaining Mike’s condition in simple, friendly language: “Hello! I’m Mike. I’m deaf and can’t speak, but I’m happy to be your delivery rider. Thank you for your patience.” He also set up a simple text system on Mike’s phone, allowing him to quickly send pre-written messages to customers with just a tap. That evening, he showed Mike how to use both, walking him through each step with patience. Mike practised handing over the card with a smile until it felt natural. The next day, Mike went back directly to the same door, determined to clear up the misunderstanding.
Mike took a deep breath and smiled as the angry customer opened his door. Before the man could react, Mike handed him the card with both hands. The customer frowned, glanced down, and read it slowly. Then his expression changed — first softening, then clouding with shame. He looked at Mike, who quickly showed the pre-written message on his phone, explaining the earlier accident. The man stood silent for a moment, then nodded, took the food, and gave Mike a sincere thumbs-up, mouthing a silent “Sorry — and thank you.” As Mike walked back to his bike, he looked down at the card and smiled to himself. This small piece of paper had given him something he thought he never had: a voice.
21.D 22.A 23.B
根据第二段中的“What makes it remarkable is that its safeguarding programme was also selected for UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices — the first time an element has achieved both a transfer and an inscription on that register at the same time.(它的特别之处在于其保护方案同时入选联合国教科文组织优秀保护实践名册,这是首个同时列入非遗名录和该保护实践名册的项目。)”
根据第三段中的“Families clean their houses and decorate doorways with colourful patterns to welcome good fortune. People light oil lamps, set off fireworks, exchange sweet treats with relatives, and pray for prosperity.(家家户户打扫房屋,用彩色图案装饰门口迎接好运。人们点亮油灯、燃放烟花、和亲友交换甜食,祈求兴旺。)”可知,文中没有提到交换油灯。
23.推理判断题。根据第四段“Today, it is widely performed in choirs, local gatherings and folk festivals, symbolizing Swiss Alpine identity and keeping the mountain-living people’s ancient lifestyle alive.(如今,它在合唱团、地方集会和民俗节日中广泛表演,象征瑞士阿尔卑斯地域身份,延续山区居民古老的生活方式)”以及第五段“Passed down orally through generations within families, it reflects core values of hospitality, festivity, and respect for local agriculture.(在家族中口口相传,体现热情好客、欢庆以及尊重本土农耕的核心价值)”可知,二者共同点是都重视本土传统生活方式。
24.C 25.B 26.A 27.D
根据第二段“When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting. (当泰太太询问原因时,有人回答说她不会做饭,所以只能吃送来的米饭。随后泰女士主动提出为她做饭,而就是这一餐,催生了 “爱心志愿团”。该组织至今已送出近 65 万份餐食,数量仍在持续增加。)”可知,一位老妇人在烹饪方面遇到的困难促使托尼·泰和他的妻子创办了Willing Hearts组织。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Since the organization’s early days, volunteers have learned how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, gain greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, build strong bonds with one another.(自该组织成立之初起,志愿者们就学会了烹饪、与各行各业的人交流、掌握多种语言、深入了解社会问题,而最重要的是,他们彼此之间也建立了深厚的友谊)”以及后文“to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors(让他们能够亲眼目睹并亲身感受那些紧闭的门后所发生的一切)”可知,指代隐性社会问题。
根据第一段“Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.(日复一日,托尼·泰先生和他的团队精心准备、烹饪、打包并将食物送到岛上的各个地方。来自各行各业的这些充满爱心的志愿者们不辞辛劳地工作,为那些生活贫困的人们带来微笑,为他们的生活带来温暖和善意)”以及第三段“This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to foster unity within their own families.(此举旨在鼓励他们成长为更有同情心的人,懂得关爱老年人的重要性,并激励他们促进家庭内部的团结)”可知,托尼·泰乐于奉献且鼓舞人心。
根据第二段“Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.(泰夫人随后主动提出为她做饭,这一简单的举动促成了“爱心厨房”的诞生。

根据第二段中“The Heat Island Effect can be a helpful reference point, scientists say. It raises awareness about urban heat, but experts say the phenomenon can put too much emphasis on ground temperature, rather than the ways those temperatures affect people. (科学家们说,热岛效应可以作为一个有用的参考点。它提高了人们对城市高温的认识,但专家称,这一现象过于看重地表温度,却忽视了高温对人产生影响的种种方式)”可知,热岛效应概念的隐性缺陷是它忽视了高温对人类的危害。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“No two cities are the same, and their reasons for absorbing heat are also not the same. (没有两座城市是完全相同的,它们吸收热量的原因也各不相同)”可知,不同城市的降温方案差异巨大,是因为各地的本地热源不同。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Considering the species of tree before planting is vital, testing if it can withstand the climate and where its shade would be most effective. For example, a tree planted in a parking lot is much less valuable than one planted in a playground. (植树前考量树种至关重要,要检验该树种能否耐受当地气候,以及树荫在何处能发挥最大效用。例如,栽种在停车场的树木,其作用远不如种在运动场上的树木)”可知,树种选择和种植位置决定了植树降温的效果。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第三段中“Heat poses different problems for different cities: for some it’s a long-term condition, while in others it’s a severe disaster. Adopting the wrong strategies can be wasteful and even harmful.

根据第一段“Previous research has shown that reminders boost short-term performance, but much less is known about whether they influence our ability to remember independently. (先前研究表明提醒功能可以提升短期表现,但关于它们是否会影响我们独立记忆的能力,人们所知甚少)”可知,关于提醒功能仍然存疑的是它对独立记忆的影响。
33.词句猜测题。根据第三段“In the offloading condition, one of the memory tasks was supported by a highly noticeable reminder displayed in bold text, while the other had to be remembered internally. (在认知卸载实验组,其中一项记忆任务依靠加粗文本展示的十分显眼的提示来辅助记忆,另一项任务必须靠大脑内部记忆)”及第四段“In fact, in the second experiment, when the reminders were made even more explicit, performance on the non-offloaded memory task actually worsened. (事实上,在第二个实验中,当提醒被设置得更加____时,没有借助提醒的记忆任务表现变差了)”可知,前文提到第一个实验里的reminder是a highly noticeable reminder (十分显眼的提示),本句even more体现递进,说明提示变得更加明显,因此explicit与Obvious (明显的)意义相近。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段“While reminders can be a powerful tool for ensuring immediate task completion, they are not cognitively neutral. They can gradually weaken the essential practice that helps us form lasting memory skills we rely on ourselves to use. (虽然提醒功能是确保立刻完成任务的有力工具,但它在认知层面并非毫无影响。它们会慢慢削弱帮助我们形成依靠自身使用的持久记忆能力的必要训练)”可知,实验主要传递的信息是提醒功能可能会损害内在记忆能力。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers caution that the study was conducted online using university students, so the results may not fully reflect how people use reminder apps in everyday life. They also examined relatively short-term memory performance, leaving open the question of whether long-term reliance on digital reminders produces similar effects. (研究人员提醒,这项研究以大学生为对象在线开展,所以结果可能无法完全反映人们日常生活中使用提醒软件的情况。研究只检测了相对短期的记忆表现,长期依赖数字提醒是否会产生同类影响尚无定论)”可知,作者提到研究有两处局限,意在说明现有研究证据并不完整,仍存在尚未解决的问题。

【导语】本文主要讲的是青少年要如何进行职业探索。
【详解】36.空前“Finding a career as a teenager can be a frightening task, but it’s an important step in preparing you for the future.(青少年时期找到一份职业可能令人感到畏惧,但这却是为未来做好准备的重要一步。)”说青少年找工作是令人畏惧但重要的,空后“It’s a long-term professional path that allows you to use your skills and hobbies to earn a living and make a huge contribution to your country.(这是一条长期的职业发展道路,让你能够运用自己的技能和爱好来谋生,并为国家作出巨大贡献。)” B项“A career is more than just a good job.(事业不仅仅是一份好工作。)”
37.空前“If you want to try different careers, there are countless career paths to choose from.(如果你想尝试不同的职业,有无数种职业路径可供选择。)”说职业路径多,空后“You should step out of your comfort zone and research different industries and job titles to get opportunities.(你应该走出舒适区,研究不同行业和职位,以获取机会。)” G项“It’s important to keep an open mind as you explore your options.(在探索各种选择时,保持开放的心态非常重要。)”
38.空前“This can involve taking relevant classes, participating in training sessions and volunteering in your community.(这包括参加相关课程、参与培训活动以及在社区中做志愿者。)”说可以去上课、参加培训、做志愿活动,空后“You should build relationships with people who have firsthand experience in the fields. Consider joining professional workshops, attending career fairs and connecting with consultants who can offer advice.(你还应与那些在相关领域拥有亲身经验的人建立联系。可以考虑参加专业工作坊、出席招聘会,或与提供职业建议的顾问取得联系。)”又说要建立联系、找有经验的人、参加工作坊。D项“Besides, getting guidance will also be rewarding.(此外,获得指导也会带来收获。)”用Besides把“技能积累”和“他人指导”并列,guidance精准对应后文consultants/people who have firsthand experience。
39.空格处是本段主旨句,由空后“Finding a career that fits your interests and values may not happen overnight. It may take time, patience and effort to obtain the perfect job. If you stay focused and keep an open mind, you will increase your chances of finding a rewarding career.(找到符合你兴趣和价值观的职业可能不会一蹴而就。获得理想的工作需要时间、耐心和努力。如果你保持专注并保持开放的心态,就更有可能找到一份令人满意的职业。)”可知,本段主要讲的是找工作需要耐心,要有开放的心态,也就需要坚持不懈和积极的心态,A选项“Be persistent and stay positive.(坚持不懈,保持积极乐观。)”概括了本段内容,可作为主旨句。
40.空前“By taking the time to understand your interests, developing your competence, and seeking direction from others, you can set yourself up for success.(通过花时间了解自己的兴趣、提升能力,并向他人寻求方向,你就能为自己铺平通往成功的道路。)”说明了解兴趣,提升能力并向他人寻求方向就可以为自己铺平通往成功的道路,E选项“In time, you’ll find a career that truly makes you satisfied.(假以时日,你终将找到一份真正令自己满意的职业。)”

W: Hi, Sam! Actually, I have. I read something about overtourism on the Internet. What’s your take on it?
M: Oh, overtourism is a big topic. When a destination gets so many tourists, overcrowding and pollution can be real problems.
W: That sounds pretty serious. Can you give me an example of a place that’s struggling with this?
M: Definitely. Barcelona is a great example. The flood of tourists has caused issues like rising living costs for locals.
W: Are there any efforts to address the problems?
M: Yes, there are. For example, Venice is trying to control tourist numbers by setting visitor limits. Some other places such as Amsterdam and Bali are encouraging tourists to other nearby spots.
W: They’re good approaches. How can travelers make a positive difference?
M: Travelers can play a big role! By avoiding popular destinations, we can help ease the pressure on those spots.
W: That makes sense. And another simple but powerful way is to travel during off-peak seasons.

M: Here is the latest news. A violin sold for $11.25 million in Boston on Friday, yet it fell short of a record. The price started at $8 million. Offers quickly rose to $10 million.
The violin was built by Antonio Stradivari in 1714 in Cremona, Italy. It was most notable for having been played for decades by Joseph Joachim, one of the most famous Hungarian violinists of the 19th century. It was acquired by violinist Si-Hon Ma in 1967, whose estate manager donated it to the New England Conservatory after his death. The Conservatory, which has had the violin for the last decade, said the sale profits will go toward a scholarship program. “The sale is meant for future students, and we will use the income to establish the largest named scholarship at the New England Conservatory,” the Conservatory’s president said.
The record for the biggest sum paid for a musical instrument at auction remains with the “Lady Blunt” Stradivarius, made in 1721, which got about $15.9 million in 2011.
