Two years ago,my son sat me down for a talk."Mom,it's time,"he said."Hear me out:
It's time we got actual TV.And you need an iPhone."
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship.Perhaps for
the first time,I began to really listen to John's opinion about our home technology.Since his
reasoning was sound and his suggestions were acceptable,I took his advice and was pleasantly
surprised with the results.
I'd known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do.On airplanes,
he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode.He wired the speakers in our house. After

something was stolen from our front yard,he picked out,set up,and now monitors our security
camera. When my computer died,I took him shopping with me.
He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming.I see our
time together reduced and our shared interests shrinking. That's why I jumped at the chance
when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen,
he immediately accepted.
It's changed our relationship in surprising ways.Where he used to get annoyed quickly
at my technical ignorance,he's learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way
that I can convey to an equally unknowing audience. The Parent-child relationship is not only
changed;it's even slightly reversed )He's leading me.I'm asking him for help and
advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He's taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in
this way is an honor. As someone not much of a reader,he now searches instruction booklets
He's even emailed and called-yes,made an actual phone call-to customer service or tech
support when products weren't working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it's proved to be a valuable way to lear
from, work with, and enjoy time with my teen.
24.What did the author think of her son's advice?
A.Unique.
B.Normal.
C.Funny.
D.Practical.
25.What does the author say about her son in paragraph 3?
A.He is skilled at technology.
B.He leads a very busy life
C.He tries to make peace with her.
D.He helps with housework.
26.Why did the author accept writing technology reviews eagerly?
A.To make more money to support the family.B.To keep a close relationship with
her son.
C.To learn more about modern technology.D.To get some products for free.
27.What made the author feel honored?
A.Her son's patience to explain technical things.
B.Her son's control of the parent-child relationship.
C.Her son's careful attitude towards the reviews.
D.Her son's rich knowledge of technical terms.

Cellphone technology has certainly evolved (as predicted over the last few
decades, but what about the debate over their use in schools?
Back in 2006,one fault line was already emerging between educators concerned about
cellphone misuse in class and parents concerned about not being able to communicate with
their children. The popularity of phone bans has yo-yoed()since then, from a high of 91
percent of public schools prohibiting (nonacademic use of cellphones in the 2009-2010
y
school year;the number dipped as low as 66 percent in 2015-2016 but has since rebounded to
76 percent in 2021-2022.
y
Of course, the debate over cellphones in school has never been as clear-cut as educators
ad
vs.parents.
你T4
Middle school administrator Matt Levinson saw a fork in the road ahead of teachers in
a 2009 essay:"They can continue fighting a losing battle and draw cruel lines in the sand,
confiscating (cellphones or banning their use during school hours.Or,they can seize
h
the teachable moment, and shift their approaches to embrace technology and engage students
with these devices.”
But for teachers in schools without a clear cellphone policy, finding those academic
applications for smartphones amid the TikTok distractions()is no easy task.
Psychology professor Jean M.Twenge, who dug through data from 11,000 teens to
conclude that "not all screen time is created equal,"laid down some dos and don'ts for
cellphone access in the blog.
But not everyone is positive about finding a middle ground between an endless
distraction and a productive learning tool.In a widely read 2016 essay, teacher Steve Gardiner
had another word for his students'relationships to their phones:addiction,"We have
incentives (to promote attendance and graduation, but many teenagers need help,
because their bodies are in the classroom, but their minds are inside their cellphones,"he said.
For some teachers, that cellphone dependency has gotten bad enough to sour them on
the profession entirely. That's the story of high school biology teacher Mitchell Rutherford,
who decided to quit teaching because of the exhaustion(筋疲力尽)he felt from competing
with cellphones for students'attention.
28.What can be learned about the popularity of phone bans?
A.It does benefit teachers a lot.
B.It has decreased the misuse in class.
C.It allows for nonacademic use.
D.It experiences ups and downs.
29 What does the underlined phrase "a fork in the road"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.A U-turning road.
B.A teaching guidebook.

C.Different choices.
D.Various teaching styles.
30.What's Steve Gardiner's attitude toward students'using cellphones?
A.Negative.
B.Mixed.
C.Tolerant.
D.Uncaring.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Some teachers in school are not capable of teaching.
B.The use of cellphones in school should be banned.
C.It is beneficial to compete with cellphones for students'focus.
D.Getting along with students makes some teachers feel exhausted.

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents ()most of them
proudly replied,"Well,I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc."But this kind of response makes
me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.
Usually, what we mean when we say someone"has an accent"is that their accent is
different from the local one,or that pronunciations are different from our own.But this
definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice.Funnily enough,in terms of
the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we
produce sounds that define our accents.Even if you don't hear it yourself, you speak with
some sort of accent. In this sense,it's pointless to point out that someone"has an accent".We
all do!
Every person speaks a dialect(),too.In the field of language study,a dialect is a
version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words
For instance,"You got eat or not?"(meaning "Have you eaten?")is an acceptable and
understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a
standard American English speaker to take pause doesn't mean that Singapore Oral English is
"wrong"or "ungrammatical".The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative,
according to native Singapore English speakers'solid system of grammar. Why should it be
wrong just because it's different?
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects-for the benefit
of everyone.
Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people's cultural
experiences and backgrounds. In a global age,the way one speaks is definitely a part of one's
identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We'd

32.What does the author think of his/her friends?response in paragraph 1?
A.It reflects.their self-confidence.
B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the point of communication.
D.It misses the real meaning of accents
33.Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A.To support the use of dialects.
B.To show the diversity of dialects.
C.To correct a grammatical mistake.
D.To highlight a traditional approach.
34.What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B.Seek for an official definition of accents.
C.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D.Distinguish ow local languages from others'.
35.What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A.Everyone Has an Accent
B.Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness
C.Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding
D.Standard English Is at Risk

The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable.I'd been telling my best friend
Missi a silly story and had spun around (in the living room when I heard that sound
and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet,it was covered with pieces of shining red, pink and
clear glass.Missi said.“Oh,no,the vase.”
“Why?What did I do?”My face turned red.
"Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to

America,"Missi replied nervously."If you'd broken anything else in the apartment,I
would've gladly said I did it.But you're going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault,
and she's going to be really mad."
I was terrified.I'd destroyed a priceless family heirloom ()Why did I have to
spin around like that?
We gathered up the broken pieces.I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi
said gently it didn't look possible.I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so easy to break,
like a colorful, swirly light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to
sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six.My stomach was in knots.Would her mom
yell at me or punish me?Would she tell me I couldn't stay in their apartment for the weekend?
I couidn't stop playing the fifteen seconds over in my mind,me spinning fast and the sound
of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was"I'm sorry".
A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.Right
from the start,we could sce she was in a good mood."Hello! It's hot today.I want to treat you
girls to that frozen yogurt.I know you like it.Let's go!"her mom said. She pointed at the open
door.
