Chen Yujie, known as “Kid Sister” on the track, is a talented young sprinter from Ningbo, Zhejiang. At the age of 17, she took part in the Asian Games in 2026 for the first time and surprised the whole country. In the women’s 100-metre final, she ran 11.06 seconds, won the gold medal and broke the Asian Games record. Many sports fans praised it, because few teenagers could make such great achievements in this big event.
Many people think she is a born (天生的) runner, but her success never comes easily. She has kept strict training for years. Every morning, she gets up early to practise speed and strength. When training becomes painful and difficult, she will dig in her heels and keep moving forward. She also tries hard to balance heavy training and schoolwork. She believes good knowledge helps her understand sports science better.
It is not simple for a teenager to compete in such an important international event. She had to take part in several races within a few days, which greatly tested her physical power. Sometimes she felt nervous before races, but she learned to calm herself down. She said she did not run only for medals. What mattered more was to challenge her limits (极限) and try her best for the team.
After the Asian Games, crowds of reporters waited to interview her. Standing in front of the cameras, Chen Yujie smiled calmly. She thanked her coaches and family. Then she said she would go back to the daily training soon.

The grass was so dry that it looked like toasted bread. The heat (炎热) had lasted for too long. One morning, my cat let out a huge sneeze (喷嚏)—Ah-choo! Grandma said, “Rain is coming.” I almost laughed. I had learned a lot in the school and I knew a lot about science, but Grandma...well, she was just Grandma. I told her, “There’s no cloud in the sky!” But she just pointed at her knees and said they felt “rainy”. I thought old people always had such funny ideas.
The next day, more strange things appeared. A pig ran past with a stick and Mama’s coffee pot boiled over. Daddy stared at the sky for a while but didn’t say anything. Then he spent the whole night building a raft (木筏). All neighbors laughed, “Hey Noah, where’s the flood (洪水)?” In my book, Noah was the man who built a boat on dry land. Now, my father was the new “Noah” of the town. Hearing this, I lowered my head and walked away.
Early the next morning, I was woken up by a loud ‘BOOM’! It was thunder. Outside my window, the rain was so heavy that the river rose up. The water went over the levee (堤坝). “Quick! Get on the raft!” Daddy shouted. We pushed the pigs and chickens onto our raft. As we floated away safely, we saw those neighbors sitting on their roofs like wet birds. Daddy turned the raft around and picked them all up. I thought nobody would call Daddy “Noah” again.
When the water finally went away, our house was covered in mud, but we were all safe. Looking at the mess, I decided not to act like a “know-it-all” anymore. My school books were great, but my cat, Grandma and Daddy’s raft taught me a lesson.
23. How did the writer feel about Grandma’s words?
A. He didn’t like them. B. He didn’t believe them.
C. He was afraid of them. D. He was interested in them.
24. What does the underlined word “Noah” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Someone laughed at for strange acts. B. A hero saving people from flood.
C. A neighbor in the town. D. A man good at building boats.
25. Which is the correct order of the following events?
a. The writer’s house was covered in mud. b. The neighbours laughed at the writer’s father.
c. The writer was woken up by a loud ‘BOOM’. d. The writer’s father spent the night building a raft.
A. b—c—d—a B. b—a—c—d C. d—b—c—a D. d—a—c—b
26. What lesson did the writer learn at last?
A. School tells us everything about life. B. Life experience is as useful as books.
C. Family should work together in danger. D. Animals’ actions help more than our guesses.
D
“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” This famous English proverb has been widely used since the 16th century. People believe that horses are difficult to change their minds. However a recent study by Nottingham Trent University has shown that this old proverb has been looking down on horses.
To test how smart horses are, the lead researcher Louise Evans and her team did a three-stage experiment with 20 horses. In the first stage, the horses got a small snack just for touching a piece of card with their noses. Then, in the second stage, a “stop light” was added: the horses could only get a snack if they touched the card when the light was off. At first, most horses ignored (忽视) the light and made many mistakes. Things changed in the third stage. The researchers added a punishment for wrong actions: if a horse touched the card when the light was on, it had to wait 10 seconds to play again. Surprisingly, all horses started to stop making mistakes and learned to touch the card only when the light was off to get the snack.
The study suggests that the horses could understand the rules the whole time but didn’t pay much attention to them in the second stage. “When there was a 10-second stop for getting something wrong, they started paying attention.” said Evans.
Evans hopes this important study will help improve horses’ lives and she also suggests not using cruel (粗鲁的) ways to train horses well. “In training, you really don’t need to use anything too strict to get really good performance out of horses. Generally, when people start to think that animals may have better cognitive (认知的) abilities than we thought, the treatment of animals will be improved.”
27. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By using a famous saying. D. By sharing an experience.
28. Which of the following is true about the experiment in the research?
A. Water, snacks and cards were needed.
B. The aim was to test the living skills of horses.
C. Horses should touch the card when the light was on.
D. Horses finally got the rule and made fewer mistakes.
29. What advice does Evans offer after the study?
A. Train animals with more snacks.
B. Punish animals for every wrong action.
C. Ignore animals’ mistakes during training.
D. Treat animals kindly and trust their abilities.
30. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Hidden Truth of the Horses B. Studies Make Horses Grow
C. Horses: Friends of Humans D. Wise Horses, Friendly Humans

Hello, I’m Bob. I’m a student in Grade 8 now. When I was in Grade 7, my classmates often laughed at me because I was slow in group activities. I was not happy about that. However, they have changed their views recently.
Last week, my geography teacher, Ms Brown asked us to build a model to show how the earth goes around the sun. I completed each step carefully. It took me about 2 weeks to finish it. When my classmates saw my work, they couldn’t believe their eyes. Ms Brown said, “Bob made the best model!”
I’ve realized that my slow work sometimes isn’t a bad thing at all. It helps me create better works. I’ve also learned that I should believe in myself and follow my heart.

C
B 24. A 25. C 26. B
I had learned a lot in the school and I knew a lot about science, but Grandma... well, she was just Grandma. I told her, ‘There’s no cloud in the sky!’ ”可知,作者认为自己具备科学知识,天上没有云就不会下雨,并不相信奶奶说即将下雨的说法。
【24题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第二段“All neighbors laughed, ‘Hey Noah, where’s the flood?’ In my book, Noah was the man who built a boat on dry land. Now, my father was the new “Noah” of the town.”
根据文章内容,事件的先后顺序为:首先父亲花一整夜建造木筏,对应句子“Then he spent the whole night building a raft.”;之后邻居们嘲笑父亲的行为,对应句子“All neighbors laughed, ‘Hey Noah, where’s the flood?’”;接着作者被巨大的雷声吵醒,洪水来袭,对应句子“Early the next morning, I was woken up by a loud ‘BOOM’!”;最后洪水退去,作者的房子满是泥浆,对应句子“When the water finally went away, our house was covered in mud”。
根据文章最后一段“My school books were great, but my cat, Grandma and Daddy’s raft taught me a lesson.”
C 28. D 29. D 30. D

根据文章首句“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” This famous English proverb has been widely used since the 16th century.
根据第二段最后一句“Surprisingly, all horses started to stop making mistakes and learned to touch the card only when the light was off to get the snack.”
根据第四段“she also suggests not using cruel (粗鲁的) ways to train horses well...when people start to think that animals may have better cognitive (认知的) abilities than we thought, the treatment of animals will be improved.”

Dear Li Hua,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re stressed about the competition. But don’t worry too much. I’m ready to help you. Here’s my advice.
First, since you find the science project difficult, why not work with some classmates? You can share the tasks. For example, they help with the science part, and you work on the English speech. Teamwork makes things easier. Second, it’s normal to feel nervous. Remember, “Practice makes perfect.” You can practice your speech before a mirror or friends. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Instead of laughing at you, others will admire your courage. Finally, believe in yourself. Just try your best and enjoy the process of the competition.
I’m looking forward to your great performance!
Yours,
Mr Yang
