Jim Smiley was crazy about betting. If there were two birds sitting on a fence, he would bet which one would fly first.
Jim caught a frog one day and took him home. For three months he sat in his backyard and trained that frog to jump. Jim was very proud of his frog. He kept it in a box and often took it to town.
One day, a stranger asked, “What have you got in the box?”
Jim answered, “I’ve got a frog that can jump farther than any other frog in Calaveras County. His name is Daniel.”
The man looked at the frog, and then said, “Well, I haven’t got a frog, but I bet you 40 dollars that any other frog could beat him.”
Jim said, “That’s all right. Hold my box, and I’ll get you a frog.”

So the man took the box and sat down to wait. After a while, he got Daniel out, opened his mouth, and filled it with small pieces of lead.
Jim searched for a long time, and finally caught a frog. He came back with the frog and gave it to the man.
They set the two frogs next to each other on the ground. Then Jim said, “One, two, three, jump!”
The new frog jumped off. However, Daniel tried and tried, but could not move. Jim was surprised, but he had no idea what was going on, of course.
The stranger took the money and left.
Jim looked at Daniel and wondered what was wrong. He picked the frog up and turned it upside down. Out came the pieces of lead. Jim got very angry. He put the frog down and ran out after the stranger, but he never caught him.
