IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)
1. The teacher writes "learning" on the blackboard and asks: "Some students say learning is easy, some say it is hard. What do you think?"
2. The teacher asks students to look at the title of the text in 1a and guess what advice the writer will give. Students discuss in pairs and say their ideas.
[Purpose] To get students interested in the topic and activate the words about learning. Predicting from the title helps students read with a purpose.
Step 2: Skimming for main ideas (8 mins)
1. The teacher asks students to read the whole text quickly and match each paragraph with its main idea in 1b.
2. The teacher checks the answers with the whole class (Para 1 - F, Para 2 - C, Para 3 - D, Para 4 - A, Para 5 - E, Para 6 - B).
3. The teacher tells students that finding the main idea of each paragraph helps us see how the text is organized.
[Purpose] To train students to skim for the main idea and to understand the organization of the text, instead of reading every word one by one.
Step 3: Careful reading (10 mins)
1. The teacher asks students to read the text again carefully and answer the five questions in 1c. Students first work by themselves, then check with their partners.
2. The teacher asks some students to say their answers and helps them find the sentences in the text that support the answers.
