Unit 3 Smart Learning

Section A 4a-4c (Grammar Focus)

I. Teaching Aims

1. Students can read the example sentences in 4a, find the connecting words (that / if / whether) and recognize the object clauses after verbs such as believe, think, find, wonder and know.

2. Students can choose the correct connecting word (that or whether / if) to complete the sentences in 4b.

3. Students can complete the passage about Hua Luogeng with the correct sentence parts in 4c, and talk about whether they would like to try the learning method it suggests.

II. Key and Difficult Points

Key points: The structure of the object clause "Main clause + that / if (whether) + clause", and the use of that and if / whether.

Difficult points: Telling when to use that and when to use if / whether; understanding that that can sometimes be left out in spoken English.

III. Teaching Tools

Textbook (Unit 3, Section A, Grammar Focus, 4a-4c), blackboard and coloured pens, sentence-pattern cards, a printed exercise sheet for 4b and 4c, and a tape recorder or PPT (optional).

IV. Teaching Procedures

Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)

1. The teacher writes two sentences on the blackboard: "I believe that reading is page number 0

important." and "I wonder if you can help me." and asks students what the small sentences after believe and wonder are doing.

2. The teacher explains that these small sentences are object clauses, and that connecting words (that / if / whether) join them to the main clause.

[Purpose] To bring students close to the grammar point through familiar sentences and arouse their interest.

Step 2: Grammar Focus - 4a (8 mins)

1. Students read the five sentences in 4a aloud.

2. Students circle the connecting words (that, if, whether) and underline the object clauses by themselves, then check the answers in pairs.

3. The teacher guides students to see that that is used after "yes/no idea" verbs (believe, think, find) and if / whether after "not sure" verbs (wonder, know).

[Purpose] To help students observe the form of the object clause and tell the difference between that and if / whether.

Step 3: Practice - 4b (8 mins)

1. Students read the five sentences in 4b and complete each blank with that or whether / if.

2. The teacher reminds them that 'or not' usually goes with whether, and that a real question meaning goes with if / whether.

3. Some students read out their answers and the whole class checks together.

[Purpose] To consolidate the use of that and if / whether through controlled practice.

Step 4: Passage - 4c (12 mins)page number 1
