Section A 3a-3e

一、Teaching Aims

1. Students can read the podcast interview in 3a and find out why Ella invited Binbin and what Binbin says about being an active learner.

2. Students can tell which active learning tips in 3b Binbin follows, and think about the tips they use themselves.

3. Students can read the descriptions in 3c and decide who are active learners and give simple reasons.

4. Students can role-play the conversation in 3d and talk about ways to learn other school subjects actively in 3e.

二、Key and Difficult Points

Key points:

1. Key words and phrases: active learner, practise, repeat, enjoy, come across, step by step, start simple and build up, put off, based on.

2. The topic "ways of learning English actively" and the five tips in 3b.

Difficult points:

3. Understanding phrases such as "become an active learner", "start out at zero" and "came across problems".

4. Using English to explain their own ways of learning in 3e.

三、Teaching Tools

1. The textbook (Unit 3, Section A, 3a-3e) and the audio recording.

2. A recording player or computer for the audio in 3d.

3. Blackboard and coloured chalk.

4. Word cards for the key words and a printed sheet of the tips in 3b.

5. A slide show (optional).

四、Teaching Procedures

Step 1  Lead-in (5 mins)

1. The teacher asks "How do you learn English?" and writes some answers on the blackboard.

2. Students talk in pairs about one way they like to learn English.

[Purpose] To get students thinking about the topic and to warm up the key words.

Step 2  Reading for the main idea (3a) (8 mins)

1. The teacher asks students to read the podcast interview and answer: Why did Ella invite Binbin to her podcast?

2. Students read quickly and share the answer: Ella invited him because he can give ideas for learning English.

3. The teacher asks again: What does Binbin think is the most important? (To become an active learner.)

[Purpose] To help students get the main idea of the text.

Step 3  Reading for details (3b) (10 mins)

1. Students read the interview again and underline what Binbin does to learn English (speak with friends, repeat the dialogues from films, read English books, write his diary in English).
