Cassandra Naud was born with a brown birthmark under her right eye. It covers a large part of her face. Her parents were given a chance to remove the birthmark right after her birth. But they were worried that it might be dangerous for her, so they refused it.
Cassandra experienced a hard childhood in primary school. Her schoolmates often laughed at her. She was heartbroken about what they said and had to cry in corners. She was even afraid of how she would be treated when she went to high school.
At the age of 13 she took an important decision to have her birthmark removed. Her parents were surprised at that but they respected her decision. They immediately invited a great doctor to operate on her. But the doctor said that she might face the risk of being left with a lazy eye(弱视眼). So she finally decided to keep her birthmark.
Cassandra dreamed of being an excellent dancer. She realised that the birthmark would make her more memorable and popular among the dancers. From then on, she began to love her birthmark, instead of trying to hide it, and she also learnt to face the world with bright smiles.

C
When I was a child, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the school basketball team, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa,"I'm going to be an athlete."
"Dave," Grandpa said kindly,"if you can't be big, you can do something big."
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, and I added an extra (额外的) mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles, 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.
All this running inspired (激发) another big dream. Some day, I'd run the Boston Marathon. I told Grandpa about my decision.
“But, Dave, you haven't trained for the marathon. Are you sure you' re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he was still willing to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day. But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn't fail. You discovered something.”
“I did?” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don't come true easily. They take work. If you train and work hard, I will wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn't be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I'd run for him.
That day, I still ran fast.“Keep going! You can do it!” Grandpa's words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each hard step. As I crossed the finishing line, I threw my arms in the air and cried,“Grandpa, we did it!”
( ) 24. Why did Dave fail to join the school basketball team?
A. Because he couldn't run fast. B. Because he didn't work hard.
C. Because he was not tall enough.
( ) 25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Running every day. B. Adding an extra mile.
C. Training for the marathon.
( ) 26. Which of the following words can best describe Dave?
A. Shy. B. Warm-hearted. C. Strong-minded.
( ) 27. What is the best title for the text?

How do you choose your friends or your partners? What rules do you follow when you choose someone to make friends with? Do they show kindness to you? Do they care for others? Do they show love for life?
A good boy made friends with a thief by mistake, and later he also became a thief.
Each time you choose a friend or a partner, you choose a part of your life and future. Bad friends can have a bad influence on your life and future. Don't let a wrong person turn you into a wrong person. Don't allow bad partners to waste your goodness and love for life.
Life is very precious, so you can't let bad friends waste it. Make friends with those who show kindness, have good habits, and care for others. Share your life with those who want to make themselves and this world better.

范文:
How to Get on Well with Friends
I'm Li Hua. I believe that getting on well with friends is very important in our life.
I have a close friend named Tom. We often study and play basketball together. Once, I had a problem with my maths homework. He explained it to me patiently until I understood. Last week, he felt upset about a test. I listened to him carefully and encouraged him. We always support each other.
In my opinion, to keep a good friendship, we should be honest and kind. It is also important to share our feelings and help each other. By doing these, we can have true friends and a happier life.
How to Get on Well with Our Parents
It's very important for us to have a good relationship with our parents.
I still remember one time when I didn't do well in an exam. Instead of hiding it, I told my parents honestly. They didn't get angry but helped me find out where I went wrong. On weekends, I often help my mum wash vegetables or talk with my dad when he cooks. These small moments make us feel closer.
In my opinion, we should try to understand our parents and talk with them politely. Sharing our daily life and listening to them are also good ways. When we respect and love each other, our family becomes warmer and happier.

How to Get on Well with Friends
I'm Li Hua.I believe that getting on well with friends is very important in our life.
I have a close friend named Tom.We often study and play basketball together.Once,I had a problem
with my maths homework. He explained it to me patiently until I understood.Last week,he felt upset about
a test.I listened to him carefully and encouraged him.We always support each other.
In my opinion,to keep a good friendship,we should be honest and kind.It is also important to share
our feelings and help each other.By doing these,we can have true friends and a happier life.
How to Get on Well with Our Parents
It's very important for us to have a good relationship with our parents.
I still remember one time when I didn't do well in an exam.Instead of hiding it,I told my parents
honestly. They didn't get angry but helped me find out where I went wrong. On weekends,I often help my
mum wash vegetables or talk with my dad when he cooks. These small moments make us feel closer.
In my opinion,we should try to understand our parents and talk with them politely.Sharing our daily
life and listening to them are also good ways. When we respect and love each other, our family becomes
warmer and happier.
