In 2019, I watched a video of an American vet treating a dog with acupuncture (针灸). I was shocked. Could tiny needles really reduce pain? I began researching it and signed up for an acupuncture course.
After finishing the course, I started using acupuncture alongside Western medicine on my patients. One of my first patients was a dog called Charlie. He had severe back pain and could hardly move. Drugs did not help much. I tried acupuncture. After three treatments, Charlie could walk again. I knew then acupuncture worked.
Many pet owners were doubtful at first. They wondered whether it was safe. Some even thought it was magic. But after seeing good results, they changed their minds. Now I have a steady stream of patients.
Acupuncture does not cure every problem. It works best for pain management. I always combine it with Western medicine. I never ask owners to stop their pet’s regular drugs. My goal is simple: to give animals relief from pain.
I hope more vets will learn acupuncture. It is another tool we can use to help animals.
24. What made the author decide to learn acupuncture?
A. His interest in traditional Chinese culture.
B. A video showing acupuncture treating an animal.

A. Generous. B. Creative. C Modest. D. Determined.

A Babylon Micro-Farm (BMF) is an indoor planting system powered by high technology. Connected to cloud services, the farm can be monitored remotely through an app which offers real-time planting data. The automatic system supplies exactly the right amount of water to each plant.
Unlike traditional outdoor farms, this indoor system cuts water use greatly. Since vegetables are grown inside buildings and eaten nearby, there is no carbon pollution from long-distance transport. Besides, no pesticides are needed, so it avoids chemical pollution to soil and water.
However, BMF also has limits. Building and running such systems costs more than common farms. At present, it can only produce limited kinds of vegetables. It cannot fully replace large outdoor farms to feed huge populations.
Supporters believe micro-farms are a helpful complement to traditional agriculture. As city population grows, indoor farming will provide fresh local produce and reduce the environmental cost of food supply.
28. What advantage does BMF have over traditional farms?
A It produces more kinds of crops.
B. It saves water and cuts transport emissions.
C. It costs less to build and operate.
D. It can feed large populations easily.
29. What does the underlined word “complement” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Replacement. B. Addition. C. Barrier. D. Symbol.
30. What is the author’s attitude toward BMF?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Uncaring.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. high-tech indoor farming system. B. Problems of traditional agriculture.
C. Ways to reduce food transport pollution. D. Future of city vegetable supply.

On Wednesday, a search team called Endurance22 announced that it had located the wreck (沉船) Endurance. The Endurance was found 1. 87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known location.
Over a hundred years after it sank near Antarctica, the ship has been found. The ship sank after it got trapped in the ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915.
The discovered ship is still in excellent shape. The name can be clearly read on the back of the ship. Its wheel looks ready to be turned. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small organisms (微生物) that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in cold water around Antarctica.
The Endurance22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an ice-breaking ship which was able to handle the difficult conditions of the Weddell Sea. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths.
For the last two weeks, the Sabertooths robots have been scanning the seafloor in a 150-square mile area around the Endurance’s last known location. The Sabertooths were especially useful, since they could travel under the ice and go where the ship could not.
The robots were looking for anything sticking up above the seafloor. Last Saturday, the ship was found. After the ship was located, the Sabertooths used high-quality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.
The Endurance is expected to remain untouched. Antarctica’s waters are protected by an international agreement, which means the ship can’t be disturbed. The Endurance22 team plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using a careful scan they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.
32. What helped to keep the Endurance in good shape?
A. Special wood. B. Sea sand. C. Fine weather. D. Cold water.
33. How did the robots locate the Endurance?
A. By searching the seafloor.
B. By breaking ice for researchers.
C. By picking up signals from the ship.
D. By diving undersea with scientists.
34. What plays the most important role in finding the Endurance?
A. Teamwork and patience. B. Good weather conditions.
C. Modern technology. D. Rich exploration experience.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Study the Endurance. B. Explore the Weddell Sea.
C. Locate the Endurance. D. Scan the seafloor.

This Way to Dreamland
Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this makes them forget what they should be doing. Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them. They can seem forgetful and clumsy. 36 They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.
But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history. 37 Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?
So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?
First, understand that some opportunities (机会) for daydreaming are better than others. Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams. 38 And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you’re daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task—preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking, or even making meaningless drawings.
It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep. 39
Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. 40
Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.
A. Having interesting things to think about also helps.
B. They stare off into space and wander by themselves.
C. Without wandering minds, we wouldn’t have relativity, Coke or Post-it notes.
D. At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.
E. It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.
F. Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand.
G. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you’re in the daydream zone.

Last week, our class went hiking in the nearby hills as a welcome activity for the new term. We were divided into several small groups to explore the hills. I walked beside my desk mate Amy in our group, who was quiet and seldom talked with others. She always kept to herself and rarely joined in our group conversations.
At first, we walked in silence while other group members laughed and chatted ahead. Halfway up the hill, I heard her heavy breath. She slowed down and held her knee tightly. I realized she hurt her knee when stepping on a rolling stone. I stopped at once and asked her if she was OK. She bit her lip and tried to hide the pain, saying she might not be able to keep going. The rest of our group had walked ahead and soon disappeared around the bend. We were left alone on the narrow path, with trees standing quietly around us.
