Sharon,Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself.
Besides,I don't know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care
about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It's best to just learn
to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.
Frank,Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day.You will
probably love it.I know I did.You should join some sports or activities that will make your
high school experience more enjoyable.Good luck!
Eddie,Aged 20
When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home
schooled all through middle school and didn't really know anyone.I suppose the best advice
would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become
easier before you know it.
David,Aged 19
I'm not going to lie.The first day is kind of frightening. But you'll get used to it.Don't be
afraid of anyone;upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you're afraid.
Just take it easy.Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to
high school quickly. After the first week it's really not bad at all.Don't worry.

Q
Wildfires have recently seriously destroyed areas across the world.Hoping to reduce harm,
researchers led by Yapei Wang,a chemist at Renmin University of China, say they have
developed a sensor to detect such wildfires earlier and with less effort.
Present detection(探测)methods rely heavily on human watchfulness(瞥觉),which can
delay an effective response. The team says its new sensor can be placed near tree trunks'bases
and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is a sharp temperature increase. That
heat also powers the sensor itself, with no need to replace batteries. The sudden temperature
change will give off electrons (to move within the liquids, creating electrical energy to
send the signal.
McCarty,a geographer at Miami University says places such as San Diego-where wild
land and city meet-could benefit from sensors like this. When a fire breaks out in a valley
that extends to someone's property,she says,with such a device,"as a homeowner,you will
know it earlier than the fire agency."And she adds that it is even more important to improve
cooperation among the different agencies involved in firefighting.
Wang says his team's next steps are to extend the device's signal range beyond the present
100 meters, which can limit its practical use,and to develop a protective cover for it.The
sensor's effectiveness,Wang notes, will also need to be tested in the field.
28.What can we learn about the new sensor?
A.It replaces batteries itself.
B.It produces response more easily
C.It depends on human observation.
D.It sends a wireless signal continuously.
29.What's McCarty's attitude towards the new sensor?
A.Critical.
B.Confused.
C.Supportive.
D.Negadve.
30.What will probably be talked about if the passage continues?
A.How people use the new sensor.
B.How much the new sensor cests.
C.How the new sensor comes into effect.
D.How Wang's team better the new sensor.
31.What's the best title for the text?
A.A research into wildfires.
B.A widely accepted new sensor.
C.A new senor to detect wildfires.
D.Different opinions on a new sensor.

Start teaching your children about money early.Starting around age 10,give them a few
dollars every week for them to spend however they want.37 But let them choose what
they want to do.Don't set limits on what they can spend it on,ana don't continually buy them
things they want. They'll soon learn that if they spend all their money as soon as they get it,
they won't be able to afford more expensive things they want.
You should also start early introducing your children to budgets and how-much
things cost.Have them go to the store with you or watch you pay.the bills.5
As your child gets older, about 13 or 14,increase their pocket money as you rcrease their
responsibility.Once they're.more responsible, give them a budget for something bigger lke
clothes and make them stick to it.
Eventually, your child will probably get a job.39 Have them put some into a
savings account to use for college:or other pursuits.Let them use the rest as mad money to
spend however they want.If you're worried about what they're buying, open them a checking
account you can monitor.
It takes many small steps.Remember that they will probably mess up along the
way,hut mistakes are how they learn.
A.Help them ehoose a well-paid job,
B.And you can also encourage them to pay the bills.
C.Take this opportunity to teach them about savings.
D.Soon they'll realize how much some things really cost.
E.Make the pocket money dependent on doing housework.
F.Teaching your child the value of money will not happen overnight.
C.If you aren't made of money,it's hard to give your kids everything they want.

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From
somewhere,a voice inside me said,"Take the chair to Jeff to repair.Go right now."
It was such a strong feeling that I hurriedly dressed and brought a dining-room chair to
his door.Jeff was a neighbor who had lost his wife a while back, and he sometimes did minor
repairs for me on furniture because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while.I was about to walk away when he answered.
He looked like he was far away in his thoughts.I felt awkward about disturbing him so early.I
greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his
living room.He said he had had a stroke()recently,and while he was home now,he still
needed to attend physical treatment. He had to build up his strength back up.I apologized for
the chair and told him I would just bring it back home. But he told me to leave it.
We talked for a while.He said that,before I arrived,he was seriously sad.So,my visit
stopped his darkness.I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed and how much
worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood lighten.
After I left his home,I went to the supermarket and gathered ingredients.I made him a
hot meal I thought he would like.Carefully,I cut up vegetables and prepared stew()for
him.I believe it was the best stew I ever made.I made homemade biscuits and prepared fresh
fruit for dessert.I realize there might have been healthier food, but I thought a hot meal would
lift his spirits.I dropped it off for him.He was glad that someone cared.Emotionally,he

I'm Li Hua,one of your schoolmates.I'm sorry to hear that you are lonely in this new
school. Now I'd like to offer you some suggestions.
It's normal for you to feel lonely because you are living in an entirely new environment.
To adapt yourself to the unfamiliar surroundings, you'd better take an active part in class and
after school activities, which can help your classmates learn more about you.Don't be afraid
to show people what you are really good at.It is easier to make friends when you have similar
interest with others. To be frank,I'd like to be your friend and I invite you to come to my

I hope everything will be fine with you in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua
