It’s a day to draw people’s attention to the problems of electronic (电子的) waste. In 2023, it called on people to care about “invisible” e-waste—things most people don’t think of as electronics. Electronic waste, or e-waste, is the name given to old electronic devices (设备) that get thrown away. These can include old computers, phones, TVs, as well as all kinds of other electronic devices. E-waste is a big problem. Though electronics can make life easier and more pleasant, the devices aren’t easy on the environment. As newer and better devices come out, lots of electronics are thrown away instead of being recycled. These things often end up in landfills, while the chemicals inside them may be a danger to the environment. Electronics can have dangerous materials like lead (铅) or mercury (汞). If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems. A group known as WEEE asked researchers from the United Nations to study a kind of e-waste that was often not noticed. The WEEE calls this type “invisible” e-waste. The UN study shows that all the 61 million tons of e-waste in a year, about 1/6 is “invisible”, and that the value of this unseen waste is worth about $ 9.5 billion a year. The surprising type leading the invisible e-waste group is toys. Worldwide, about 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year. These include toys like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys and so on. In all, toys make up about 35% of the invisible e-waste. But the problem is far larger than just toys. The UN report shows that other everyday things like home alarms, smoke alarms, power tools are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The report says that 36% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these types. Nowadays, more and more people get to know about the harm of e-waste, and they will devote more to getting electronics reused or recycled. 38. Why is e-waste a big problem? A. Because it’s difficult to collect it. B. Because it’s too bad for the environment. C. Because it takes up too much space. D. Because it costs people too much money. 39. How many tons of invisible e-waste are there in a year? A. About 7.3 million tons. B. About 60 million tons. C. About 6 million tons. D. About 10 million tons. 40. What can we learn from the passage? A. Few people will pay attention to invisible e-waste. B. More invisible e-waste will be thrown away everywhere. C. More landfills will be built to deal with invisible e-waste. D. More actions will be taken to reduce the harm of e-waste. 41. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To draw attention to invisible e-waste. B. To explain the meaning of invisible e-waste. C. To ask people to use fewer. D. To tell the purpose of International E-Waste. 【答案】38. B 39. D 40. D 41. But when we come to the question “How much time do they actually spend on media (传播媒介) daily?”, the answer is surprising: young people spend about nine hours every day using media, and this only includes media used for enjoyment. Today’s young people seem to have become crazy multi-taskers. They often use media when doing other activities. Some watch TV when doing homework, some text (发短信), and some others listen to music. But what do young people think of this? A research showed that two thirds of them believed watching TV or texting had no influence on their schoolwork. Half of them thought using social media made no difference. However, researches have given a different answer: “media multi-taskers” did worse in tests. Scientists did a research among more than 400 students. It shows that those who text a lot have more trouble sleeping and do worse in their study. In another research, students who didn’t text during a lesson took down a lot more notes than those who were texting. A similar research also found that students who texted when doing schoolwork had lower grades. According to a research, if a kid uses social media a lot, especially at night, he or she will sleep worse and feel more nervous and depressed (消沉的). On the one hand, young people stay up late to check messages and information. They may also be woken up by messages they receive. On the other hand, even the light from a screen could influence their sleep. Some other researches also show that children who use media at night go to bed later, get fewer hours of sleep each week, and become sleepy more easily during the daytime. 42. According to the article, young people use media for about ___________ every week. A. 55 hours B. 65 hours C. 75 hours D. 85 hours 43. People only use media for enjoyment. B. Most multi-taskers believed it had a bad influence on them. C. The results of researches on it are different from young people’s thoughts. D. Using media too much has a bad influence on young people. C. The use of social media has both advantages and disadvantages. D. Mobile phones are the main tools students use for school learning. 【答案】42. B 43. D 44. C 45. The word red equals beauty. The expression hongyan, meaning red colour, is a synonym (代名词) of a beautiful girl. Red is also one of the most popular words used in the names of Chinese women. Here are some suggestions for you. First, you can make a detailed revision plan for Maths. Focus on the topics you are not good at and practice related exercises every day. If you meet difficult problems, don’t be afraid to ask your Maths teacher or classmates for help. They will be willing to explain them to you. Also, taking mock Maths tests regularly can help you get used to the test format and reduce anxiety. For your sports problems, being a bit fat and disliking morning exercises is totally normal, but sports are important for your health. You can start with simple sports that you may enjoy, like walking or jogging after class. Gradually increase the intensity and time. You can also ask a friend to do sports with you, which will make it more fun. As for morning exercises, try to think of them as a way to wake up your body and start the day with energy. Even if you don’t like them at first, sticking to them may help you find the fun. I believe with these methods, you can deal with your problems and become more relaxed. B Bassanio looked at the three boxes, but he did not read the writing on them. He looked at the gold and silver. “The world is tricked by appearances,” he said. “People often hide ordinary things with beautiful gold, silver, and jewels. People always agree with those who speak well, even if they say foolish things. Many people who seem brave are really cowards. How often do we believe in leaders who turn out to be bad?” Then Bassanio remembered the story of Midas, the man who loved gold too much. He wanted everything to be gold. He wished that he could make everything gold just by touching it. When he could, it was a disaster. He could not eat his golden food, and he was afraid to touch his daughter. “No, I do not want these beautiful boxes of gold and silver. I will choose the lead box with its ordinary color. It speaks more to me than all the gold and silver in the world. Please give me the key to the lead box. Let happiness be mine.” Bassanio said to himself. One of the servants gave him the key, and he went to the box and opened it. Portia was very pleased. She could not believe it, until Bassanio opened the box and saw the picture of Portia inside it. When he saw the picture, he loved her even more because the picture was very beautiful. He wondered how anyone could paint such a good picture of her. It was almost as beautiful as Portia herself. He looked at all the parts of the picture. He looked at the eyes and the hair and the eyes. All of them were perfect. But Portia herself was even more beautiful than her picture. The writing inside the box told him that he had chosen the right box. It said that he should go to Portia and look into her eyes. She would be his wife. Bassanio could not believe it. “Is it really true?” he asked.“Will you really be my wife? I am afraid to believe it until you say so.” 34. What may “cowards” do when they face the difficulties? A. The things in the boxes D. Tricks by appearances C International E-waste Day takes place every year on October 14. D Very often, when we see young people sitting there, looking at the screen of a mobile phone and smiling, we may think nothing is wrong. The underlined word “multi-taskers” in Paragraph 2 refers to people who __________. A. ask a lot of questions B. use different media for learning C. have several mobile phones D. do several tasks at the same time 44. Which of the following statements about using media is TRUE? A. People only use media for enjoyment. B. Most multi-taskers believed it had a bad influence on them. C. The results of researches on it are different from young people’s thoughts. D. Students like to use media to help take more notes during a lesson. 45. What is the article mainly about? A. Social media is very popular among young people. B. Using media too much has a bad influence on young people. C. The use of social media has both advantages and disadvantages. D. Mobile phones are the main tools students use for school learning. 四、任务型阅读 阅读短文,按要求回答问题。 Chinese people like the red colour a lot.
