When he was a teenager, Patch Adams was very unhappy, and he spent many years in a special hospital for people with mental (精神的) health problems.
When he left the hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, the USA. But when he was there, he did things in a different way. For example, he didn’t like the doctors’ white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients, and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn’t like Adams because he was too different.
Adams believed that people in hospital needed more than just medicine. He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them. He spent a lot of time with children in hospital and often dressed up as a clown (小丑) to make the children laugh. When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called “the Gesundheit Institute (健康研究所)”, together with some other doctors. They wanted it to be a place with a different way of working with sick people.
He became famous during the 1980s. In 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life. It was very successful. In the film, Robin Williams played Adams. Williams said, “Adams is a really warm person who believes that patients need a doctor who is a friend. I enjoyed playing him.”

Have you ever wondered why so many fresh ideas come from teenagers? A recent study gives part of the answer. Researchers at the University of Cambridge studied over 2000 people aged 12 to 65 and tested their ability in “divergent thinking” —producing many different ideas for one problem. The result was clear: people between 14 and 19 scored the highest.
To learn more, the team gave teenagers and adults several real-life tasks, such as reducing food waste at school and helping old people use smartphones. ▲ In one task, students had to suggest ways to reduce leftover (剩余的) food in the dining hall. Teenagers came up with 35% more possible solutions than adults.
Scientists believe this is partly because the teenage brain is still developing, especially the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质). As a result, teenagers are often more open to unusual ideas and less afraid of making mistakes. However, the researchers also found that the best answers were not only new but useful. When teachers checked the ideas, many teen answers were simple enough to use in daily life.
The study has inspired schools to rethink how they teach. Instead of only giving students facts, more schools are asking them to join in projects and solve real problems in their communities. In several pilot schools, participation in such projects increased by 18% in one term. The message is clear: when teenagers are trusted and guided, their creativity can make everyday life better.
11. The underlined word “divergent” in Paragraph 1 most likely means “________”.
A. different B. careful C. intelligent D. active
12. According to Paragraph 1, who scored the highest in divergent thinking?
A. Children under 10. B. People between 14 and 19.
C. Adults between 30 and 40. D. People aged over 50.
13. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2?
A. As a result, the adults quickly changed their answers.
B. The same problem was later tested in hospitals.
C. Take the school lunch problem as an example.
D. This report was written for local school cooks.
14. What does the study suggest schools should do?
A. Spend more time on textbook teaching. B. Give students fewer chances to explore.
C. Teach students to follow fixed answers. D. Let students solve real problems creatively.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How Adults Can Learn to Be Creative B. The Teenage Brain: Built for Creativity
C. Divergent Thinking: A Test for All Schools D. Why Knowledge Is More Important Than Ideas
【答案】11. A 12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B

Many teenagers do not treasure the importance of hard work and aren’t interested in doing so. According to a study of nearly 3000 students, only 22% of primary and middle school students help with everyday chores around the house. This is not good news.
We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving our parents and facing difficulties in life. Parents may not work out every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to solve the problems in our life. This is what our country is trying to do now-helping more students get hard-working spirit.
To help students of different ages understand the importance of labour education (劳动教育), the State Council (国务院) made a guideline (指导方针). It calls for students to respect work. Students should learn some life skills and get good working habits through such education.
Schools and parents are very important in teaching students about the value of hard work, the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should provide students with labour education classes every week, according to the guideline. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world working experience. For example, schools can teach children how to plant trees on Tree-Planting Day.
As children’s first teachers, parents should also encourage them to learn how to do chores at home. Students should learn one or two life skills every year, such as cooking, washing their own clothes and cleaning their rooms.

A. About 300. B. About 660. C. About 2340. D. About 3000.

C. 千磨万击还坚劲,任尔东西南北风。 D. 一寸光阴一寸金,寸金难买寸光阴。
19. What can you learn from the passage?
A. The guideline asks students to learn all life skills at once.
B. Only primary schools need to offer labour education classes.
C. Schools can organise activities to give students real-life work experience.
D. Parents don’t play an important role in teaching children about hard work.

D
16. According to the study, how many school students help with everyday chores around the house?
A. About 300. B. About 660. C. About 2340. D. About 3000.
17. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A study of 3000 students. B. The importance of hard work.
C. The result of a study. D. Everyday chores around the house.
18. What Chinese saying is the closest to the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. 少壮不努力,老大徒伤悲。 B. 授人以鱼,不如授人以渔。
20. Where does the passage probably come from?
