Tom lived deep in the forest with a family of deer. He lost his parents when he was little, and the kind-hearted deer looked after him. Tom knew every tree, river and secret path in the woods. But he was not one of them. As he grew older, he began to wonder about the world of human beings.
One cold morning, Tom walked along a river for a long time until he arrived at a small town. Some children were playing games. When they saw the strange boy in animal clothes, they were surprised and ran away quickly.
Then a farmer walked out, and Tom opened his hands to show that he was hungry. The farmer hurried back and called many other people.
“Look,” one old man said, “this boy has lived in the forest for years.” And a lady called Anna walked closer. “He looks just like my son who got lost three years ago.” “Take him home, Anna,” other people said. “Maybe this is a gift from the forest.” So Anna took Tom to her house and gave him some food.
It was Tom’s first time staying inside a house. He did not feel happy. The small room felt like a cage. He could not run freely as he did in the forest.” But I need to get used to human life,” Tom said to himself. “I should learn to talk and live like other people.” He was good at learning, and soon he picked up lots of new words from Anna.
However, that night, Tom could not fall asleep indoors. He jumped out of the window and slept on the grass outside. Before he closed his eyes, a soft deer nose touched his face. It was Little White, one of his deer family members.
“Wake up, my friend,” Little White said. “I bring bad news. The wolf group is coming near. They will look for you later.”
“I know the danger,” Tom said. “Thank you for telling me. Will you keep sending me messages?”
“Of course. But will you forget your forest family when you stay with humans?”
“Never,” Tom answered. “I will always remember and love all of you.”

C
If you’re working to become better or hoping to make a change, you’ll probably hear your family and friends say “go big or go home”. They think you should set high expectations (期待). But is it really good?
Having high expectations could be good. It can motivate you. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably try your best to make them come true. For example, if you believe that you can get an A in a test, you will probably spend a lot of time working on it. Also, when you start meeting your expectations, you’ll set even higher expectations for yourself. Besides, having high expectations for yourself doesn’t only do you good. It will make a difference to others.
But if your expectations are too high to realize, it can be bad. Having high expectations can sometimes lead to mental problems, such as worry and unhappiness. The findings of a study showed that some students were under serious stress (压力) because they wanted to be perfect. Great expectations can also let you down. This is especially true when you set expectations for other people whose actions you cannot control. For example, if you’re feeling alone and you call up your friends, you surely expect them to make you feel better. When this fails to happen, you will feel down and unsatisfied with your friends. To avoid this situation, you should set your expectations realistically
It is hard to manage expectations, but the main thing is to set a more realistic and achievable expectation.
33. What does the underlined word “motivate” probably mean?
A. Beat. B. Encourage. C. Surprise. D. Warn.
34. Why were some students under serious stress?
A. Because their family didn’t support them. B. Because their study results were terrible.
C. Because their friends didn’t care about them. D. Because their expectations are too high to realize.
35. How can you avoid feeling down when setting expectations on others?
A. By controlling their actions. B. By calling up your friends.
C. By making others feel better. D. By setting your expectations realistically.
36. What is the best title for the text?
A. Right Views on Setting Expectations B. Serious Problems in Achieving Expectations
C. Possible Reasons for Meeting Expectations D. Valuable Advice on Realizing Expectations
B 34. D 35. D 36. A
根据第二段“Having high expectations could be good. It can motivate you. When you have high expectations for something, you’ll probably try your best to make them come true.”
根据第三段“The findings of a study showed that some students were under serious stress because they wanted to be perfect.”以及“But if your expectations are too high to realize, it can be bad.”

41. regretted
42. decision
43. stick 44. focused
45. experience
decision“决定”,make a decision“做出一个决定”。
stick to“坚持”;try to do sth“努力做某事”,空处填动词原形stick。
The spirit of never giving up is important for everyone. It helps us get through difficult times and ____46____ (success) in the end. For example, J. K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter book when ____47____ (live) a poor life. She was refused by 12 publishers before her book ____48____ (final) came out. Some people may say that they are not talented enough, but in fact, hard work is much ____49____ (important) than talent. If you keep practising every day, you will make progress little by little. Remember: nothing is impossible as long as you have a strong will and keep ____50____ (work) towards your goal.
46. succeed
47. living 48. finally
49. more important
50. working
此处并列连词and连接两个并列的谓语结构,根据“It helps us get through difficult times…”
We must work ________________ at all times, without any mistakes allowed.
【答案】strictly to high standards
故填strictly to high standards。
Years of hard work finally ________________, and he was chosen as the president of the company.
【答案】paid off
I decided to ________________ the time I spend on my mobile phone so I could finish my homework earlier.
【答案】cut down on
固定搭配decide to do sth.“决定做某事”,to后面需要接动词原形。
Don’t let fear ________________ of your success.
【答案】get in the way ##stand in the way
【详解】原句中“阻碍你”是关键词,对应英文中的固定短语get in the way或stand in the way,均意为“妨碍某人、挡某人的路”。“let sb do sth”意为“让某人做某事”,let后接动词原形get/stand。
When facing bullying, we should bravely ________________ the victims.
【答案】stand by
An 11-year-old blind girl is ____56____ (pride) of walking alone every day to and from school. Why? She has to walk ____57____ so many barriers (障碍物) in her way. The girl’s home is near the school, yet her mother follows her without ____58____ (let) her know.
The case of the girl shows the barrier-free facilities (设施) are not enough in her city. Many other cities are short of barrier-free facilities as well. There’s no well-designed path for ____59____ blind. In fact, in the early 2000s, some cities started to build barrier-free facilities for disabled people. However, only a few large cities ____60____ (have) facilities of high quality so far.
It’s common that sidewalks are taken up with barriers. Few workers are sent to move them away, ____61____ it’s dangerous to the blind to walk on them. Also, some other barrier-free facilities are badly destroyed (毁坏). Only a few workers are assigned (分配) to do the task of repairing the ____62____ (break) ones.
Some ideas can make a ____63____ (different)—build more barrier-free facilities and employ more workers to protect them—but hard to be put into practice, because both of them require money. In a word, more money ____64____ (need) to carry on with the work. It’s our duty to make life much ____65____ (easy) for disabled people so that they can live without barriers some day.
56. proud
57. past 58. letting
59. the 60. have had
61. so 62. broken
63. difference
64. is needed
65. easier
故填the。
故填have had。
a后接单数名词,different的名词形式是difference,make a difference意为“产生影响”。
故填is needed。
根据“make life much…”
Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages (阶段). As we pass through each one, our understanding of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us about life and growth.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered (掌握) what they need for the future.“Almost done” perfectly expresses this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close (接近)”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to adulthood.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life but still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they’re fully prepared to face the world.
The“Yes!” moment of graduation soon gives way to the reality that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “What!”
Upon entering the “real world”, young people often feel the challenges of life hard to deal with. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust our courses (调整航线), understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that success is a lifelong journey. Take this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.

Dear Editor,
I feel like since I got into Grade 9, my parents have been very strict with me in my studies. They always give me too much extra homework. I have no choice but to do it. I think they are going too far and I feel helpless. What should I do?
I’d like to run for president of the Students’ Union. However, I’m a little shy by nature. I find it hard to start conversations with my classmates.

We seem to have few shared interests and hardly anything to talk about. I’m afraid I’m not very popular. I really wonder how I can get my classmates to know and support me. I feel so lonely and worried.
Yours,
Mike
