Passage A
Steep Stoop
Dear Diary:
I had just finished a jog in Prospect Park when I noticed an older woman beckoning me from the door of a brownstone.
I pulled out my earbuds.
"Yes?" I called up to her.
"Can you get my newspaper?" she asked, pointing to the bottom of her steep stoop.
"Oh, sure," I said.
I quickly jogged the paper up to her.
"Ah, thank you," she said, beaming at me like I was Wonder Woman, not a sweaty, middle-aged mom in ill-fitting exercise shorts.
I was making my way back down the steps when she called out to me again.
"Sorry?" I said, turning back toward her.
"My window," she said. She gestured sadly toward a window overlooking the street. "It is stuck. My apartment, so very warm."
I hesitated.
"Did you call your super?"
"No," she said, shaking her head. "He never comes."
She stared at me beseechingly.
"Um, you want me to open it?" I asked.
She grinned.
"Yes, come!"
She motioned for me to follow her, and I walked uneasily into the building. Should I really be entering this stranger's home, I wondered. I could picture my husband shaking his head at me.
As I entered her dimly lit living room, I stopped in my tracks. Hundreds of shiny eyes stared back at me, and a chill ran down my sweaty back. The entire wall was filled with a collection of old-fashioned porcelain dolls.
"There," she said, pointing to the window.
I hurried over and gave it a heave, and it popped open.
She grinned.
"Wonderful," she said.
I wished her a good day and made my exit. I was happy to have given her a breeze, but I was now wondering how many brownstones secretly had entire walls of spooky dolls.

Passage B
The Surprising Benefits of Doing Nothing
In a world that glorifies busyness and productivity, the idea of doing nothing seems almost sacrilegious. We are constantly encouraged to fill our time with activities, achievements, and goals. But what if I told you that doing nothing could be one of the most beneficial things you could do for your well-being? Here's how embracing the art of doing nothing has transformed my life, and why you might want to give it a try.
The Culture of Busyness
We live in a society that equates being busy with being successful. Our days are packed with work, social obligations, and endless to-do lists. We pride ourselves on our ability to multitask and squeeze productivity out of every minute. But this constant hustle comes at a cost.
Burnout, anxiety, and stress are rampant. We are so focused on doing more that we forget the importance of simply being. This relentless drive for productivity leaves us exhausted and disconnected from ourselves and the world around us.
The Myth of Constant Productivity
For years, I bought into the myth that constant productivity was the key to success. I filled every moment with activities, believing that the busier I was, the more accomplished I would become. But instead of feeling fulfilled, I found myself overwhelmed and perpetually tired.
The problem with this mindset is that it ignores the natural rhythms of life. Just as nature has periods of growth and rest, so do we. Constantly pushing ourselves without taking time to rest and recharge is unsustainable and leads to physical and mental burnout.
Discovering the Art of Doing Nothing
It wasn't until I hit a wall that I realized the importance of doing nothing. I was forced to take a step back and reevaluate my approach to life. In the process, I discovered the art of doing nothing — and it changed everything.
( )1. What do people in the society usually think of being busy?
A. It means people are successful.
B. It makes people feel relaxed.
C. It helps people get more free time.
D. It is a bad habit we should give up.
( )2. What result may constant hustle bring to people?
A. Better sleep and more energy.
B. Burnout, anxiety and stress.
C. More chances of making friends.
D. Better understanding of nature.
( )3. What does the underlined phrase "hit a wall" mean?
( )4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer always felt fulfilled when keeping busy all day.
B. Nature also needs time to rest besides growing.
C. People should fill every minute with different activities.
D. Doing nothing is useless for people's health.
( )5. What is the writer's main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce different kinds of social activities.
B. To explain why being busy is important for success.
C. To show the advantages of learning to do nothing.
D. To describe the natural rhythms of plants and animals.
Passage C
It All Came Down to One Final Race. Humans Won. (Part 2)
The contest between humans and robots had reached its final stages, and the machines were already threatening to take control of the scoreboard.
First came golf. YouTube golfer Grant Horvat faced Rob O.T., described as the most precise golf robot in the world. Five targets stood across the course at increasing distances, and the first player to hit three would earn a point for the team.
The robot struck first. Grant changed clubs and aimed farther down the course, but the pressure kept building. He needed one final hit to tie the round. It never came. Rob O.T. secured another victory for Team Robot, leaving humanity with only one chance to recover.
Everything now depended on a 50-meter race. Noah Lyles, the fastest man in the world, would face three robots, each faster than the last. To save humanity, he had to beat all three. If even one machine crossed the line ahead of him, the robots would win the entire challenge.
The first opponent was the Unitree G1, a humanoid robot capable of balancing, flipping, and fighting. It looked impressive, but once the race began, Noah left it far behind.
Next came the Unitree H1, a medal winner at the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games and the fastest robot on two legs. This race could have ended everything. Again, Noah pulled away with ease.
But the final machine was different. Black Panther was modeled after a cheetah and could reach speeds above 22 miles per hour. This was no awkward humanoid runner. It was built for speed.
At the start, Noah moved ahead, but Black Panther stayed close and began gaining ground. For a moment, the result looked uncertain. Then Noah reached the finish first.
Robots may one day outrun and outperform us. In 2025, however, humanity still had the edge — and one of the world's fastest runners had just proved it.
( )1. Who won the golf match between Grant Horvat and Rob O.T.?
A. Grant Horvat.
B. Rob O.T.
C. Noah Lyles.
D. Unitree G1.
( )2. What did Noah Lyles need to do to win the whole contest?
A. He needed to beat all three robots in the 50-meter race.
B. He had to win the golf game first.
C. He should break the world running record.
D. He needed to design a faster robot.
( )3. What can we know about Black Panther?
A. It was a humanoid robot good at flipping.
B. It won many medals in robot games.
C. It was made according to the cheetah's body.
D. It ran more slowly than Unitree H1.
( )4. What does the underlined phrase "had the edge" mean?
( )5. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Amazing Golf Robot Rob O.T.
B. Noah Lyles, the Fastest Runner in History
C. A Contest Between Humans and Robots Ends with Human Victory
D. Different Kinds of Humanoid Robots in the World
Passage D
Silkworm Silk Is Now Almost as Tough as a Bulletproof Vest
When you think of silk, you think of that incredibly soft, hyper-slick material that, when used as a fancy pillowcase to keep your hairdo intact, can make your head slide clean off the thing in the middle of the night, immediately making you question whether spending $75 on a single pillowcase was worth it.
Humans have been extracting silk from silkworms for thousands of years, and now, according to researchers from Tufts University, Imperial College London, and the University of Michigan, the super soft, sleek, and luxurious material may have a secondary use as super tough body armor.
In a new study published in Nature Sustainability, researchers found a way to transform silk fibers into a tough-as-nails material durable enough to be considered somewhere in the neighborhood of Kevlar's toughness. Pretty cool for a material that we normally associate with rich people pajamas.
The Science Behind Creating a Supermaterial With Silkworm Silk
Instead of dissolving silk down with chemical-heavy processing like scientists usually do, the team kept the fibers intact. They aligned them in one direction and subjected them to carefully controlled heat and pressure. If you apply too little pressure, the material remains weak. Too much and it starts to become brittle. But if you find the sweet spot, a temperature range of 257 and 419 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep the pressures hovering around 9800 atmospheres, then those fibers start to fuse to form a dense, transparent solid material that's nearly as tough as Kevlar, the material lining bulletproof vests.
The researchers say the material can withstand ballistic impacts, but it's also biocompatible enough to be used for medical devices, like the screws, pins, and plates people get bolted into, say, rickety knees or a fractured skull. It can also potentially be used as a component in communications systems.

Passage B
Passage C
Rob O.T.
Passage D
