Passage A
Forget Packing Light — I Prepare for Anything
Some travelers want to cross the world with only a toothbrush, one shirt and a tiny bag. If that is your dream, this is not advice for you. I have no interest in packing light.
To me, packing should not be a cold exercise in cutting every possible gram. It is the beginning of an adventure. Choosing what to bring is part of the fun.
I recently traveled to Edinburgh to perform my first solo theater show after years of working with another comedian. I packed for every situation I could imagine: smart clothes, casual clothes, pajamas, slippers, gym clothes, swimwear and several outfits for the show. I also brought books, face masks and a few things to help rest my voice.
I do not want to buy things simply for the sake of owning them. But I enjoy having choices. Whatever the day brings, I like being able to open my luggage and find the right thing.
My suitcase matches this idea. Years ago, I found a huge, old-fashioned case at a sale. It was once the most expensive thing I owned, but I have never regretted buying it. It is beautiful and useful. Every mark and torn sticker reminds me of a past trip.
With careful planning, packing cubes and a very full clothes bag, I filled the suitcase to its limit. I had packed everything I could possibly need.
Then I packed a second suitcase — just in case.

Passage B
In Memory of Yayoi Kusama: Rest in Infinity
When Yayoi Kusama was a child, ordinary objects sometimes seemed to change before her eyes.
The red flowers on a tablecloth might suddenly spread across the walls, ceiling and windows. Fields of dots appeared to cover everything around her — even her own body.
For many people, such experiences would be frightening. Kusama found a way to face them: she turned them into art.
Dots and flowers became the language of her creative life. She painted them on canvases, sculptures, furniture and clothes. In her famous Infinity Mirror Rooms, lights and reflections seem to continue forever, making visitors feel as if they have stepped into another universe.
"I fight pain and fear with art," Kusama once said. Creating did not simply distract her from difficult experiences. It gave them a shape that she could control and share.
After moving to New York, Kusama became an important figure in the city's experimental art scene. She organized unusual public performances and created works that challenged familiar ideas about where art belonged and what it could look like.
Over time, her exhibitions attracted huge crowds. Visitors waited for hours to enter her mirrored rooms, while her pumpkins and endless dots became instantly recognizable around the world.
Yet Kusama's influence goes beyond her visual style.
By speaking openly about fear, anxiety and her unusual way of experiencing the world, she showed that creativity does not have to come from a calm or conventional mind. Experiences that feel overwhelming can also become sources of powerful artistic ideas.
Today, the art world is more willing to welcome creators who see, feel or communicate differently. Kusama helped open that door by refusing to hide the connection between her inner life and her work.
Her art did not erase fear. Instead, it transformed fear into something bright, strange and beautiful — and invited the rest of us to step inside.
( )1. What happened to Kusama when she was a little girl?
A. She created her first painting with dots.
B. Ordinary things seemed to change in front of her.
C. She travelled to New York for art study.
D. She built her Infinity Mirror Rooms.
( )2. How did Kusama deal with her special experiences?
A. She kept them as secrets and never told others.
B. She turned these experiences into art works.
C. She moved to another city to stay away from them.
D. She asked doctors to help her forget them.
( )3. What does the underlined word "transformed" in the last paragraph mean?
A. 转化
B. 消除
C. 寻找
D. 测试
( )4. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Great creativity may come from special life experiences.
B. Artists must have calm and common minds to create works.
C. Kusama's art only focuses on paintings of flowers.
D. Visitors can stay in Infinity Mirror Rooms for free.
( )5. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Life of a Famous Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama
B. How Dots and Flowers Become Popular Paintings
C. Ways to Deal with Fear and Anxiety in Daily Life
D. The History of Experimental Art in New York
Passage C
Why Old-Fashioned Names Feel Fresh Again
Old names are newly popular for parents picking monikers for their infants, with names like Eleanor, Violet, and Oliver rising again after taking big dips in the 1980s and '90s.
That's not surprising to experts who study baby-name trends. The trend of reviving old names in a new era is so common that it has a name: The 100-Year Rule. And though digging into the past for baby names might sound odd, it's a well-documented pattern.
So what's the deal with century-old names suddenly surging in popularity?
Back in 1988, Pamela Redmond and Linda Rosenkrantz published a book called Beyond Jennifer & Jason that explored why parents chose the names they did. They labeled one trend the "100-Year Rule," which says it takes about 100 years for an old, dusty name to sound fresh again.
There are a few reasons for this.
First is the cyclical nature of what's fashionable in culture, and that includes names. Like 70s bell-bottoms making a comeback in the 2000s, names once written off as outdated can return to rotation.
There's also "grandparent avoidance": parents of newborns don't want to pick "recent" names that belong to their own parents, who are the babies' grandparents. Instead, they dig further back in the family tree, usually reviving a name that was popular around 100 years ago.
Websites like BabyNames.com, which tracks names that come up often in parents' searches, show that old, vintage names are climbing the ranks again.
Charlotte, for example, tops BabyNames.com's list of trending girls' names. Popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, it hit its lowest point in the 1980s and '90s — but by 2024 it ranked fourth most popular in the U.S., according to official naming records.
Eleanor tells a similar story. The name bottomed out in 1986, ranking close to 700, but the same records now list it among the top 20 most popular names in the U.S.
Boys' names are following suit: Theodore and August are rapidly becoming popular again, helped by nicknames like Theo, Ted, and Gus that give them modern versatility.
Meanwhile, names popular 50 years ago are now in the naming basement. Jennifer and Jessica, chart-toppers in the 1970s and '80s, now rank below 500 on BabyNames.com. If the 100-Year Rule is accurate, these could be the names parents revive for their newborns in another 50 years.
( )1. What is the "100-Year Rule" about?
A. Old names become fresh again after around 100 years.
B. Parents should name babies after their great-grandparents.
C. Popular names can stay popular for more than 100 years.
D. A book about naming babies was written 100 years ago.
( )2. What is one reason for the return of old-fashioned names?
A. Parents hope the names will bring good luck.
B. Cultural fashion changes in a circular way.
C. Old names are easier to write and remember.
D. Schools encourage students to use old names.
( )3. What does the underlined word "reviving" in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. 淘汰
( )4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Charlotte was always the most popular girl's name.
B. Eleanor was very popular in the year 1986.
C. Nicknames help Theodore become popular again.
D. Jennifer is still one of the top names in America now.
( )5. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the history of American names.
B. To explain why old names become popular again.
C. To give advice on choosing nicknames for kids.
D. To compare different names for boys and girls.
Passage D
Meet the Wasp Named After a 100-Year-Old Naturalist
Famed British naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough turns 100 years old on May 8, and a team of researchers has prepared a special present: an entire new genus of wasp named in his honor.
Meet Attenboroughnculus tau, a tiny parasitic wasp discovered in Chile. The specimen is 0.14 inches long and has a T-shaped marking on its abdomen that inspired the species name, "tau." The insect was collected from Chile's Valdivia Province in 1983, and it took over four decades for someone to officially recognize it as something new.
"We hope to inspire global scientists to take another look in their collections to see if there is something small that could contribute to our collective understanding and therefore the future of our natural world," Jennifer Pullar, science communications manager at London's Natural History Museum, says in a statement.
It was volunteer Augustijn De Ketelaere, a graduate student at Ghent University in Belgium, who noticed the insect's unexpected traits while the team was examining the museum's ichneumonid collections. Attenboroughnculus tau has a unique combination of anatomical features that make it different from already established genera: a strongly curved abdominal segment, toothlike structures on the ovipositor (which they use to lay eggs), and distinctive wing and leg morphology.
If you think Attenborough will be offended by the unsavory nature of the bug named in his honor, think again. Parasitoid wasps have appeared in his documentaries, such as the BBC nature documentary series The Trials of Life, in which he dubbed them the "bodysnatcher wasp."
"David Attenborough has featured Chile's diverse, extreme landscapes in several documentaries, emphasising the unique environmental challenges and ecological resilience of species within the country," De Ketelaere, Pullar, and lead author Gavin Broad — principal curator of insects at the museum — write in a recent Journal of Natural History study. "He has used his work to reveal the intimate, unseen or overlooked within nature. This resonates in the discovery of this species in an unsorted drawer within the collections of the Natural History Museum, London."
This isn't the first time Attenborough is honored by taxonomists. In fact, the man has over 50 species named after him, including the carnivorous plant Nepenthes attenboroughii.
Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough!

Passage B
Passage C
BabyNames.com
Passage D
