Here are some of those places that are finding sustainable solutions. Iceland Iceland has been viewed as one of the most environmentally aware countries in the world with good reason. It uses its natural resources for heat and electricity production; it also fights against ocean pollution and supports sustainable fishing practices. Iceland is well known for its natural hot springs and volcanoes, as well as opportunities for whale watching and seeing the Northern Lights. Palau When you imagine a heaven on earth, you might be dreaming of Palau. This group of more than 200 volcanic and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean is circled by extremely clear waters that are home to all kinds of sea creatures. The islands themselves are covered in lively forests and clean beaches. Palau focuses on sustainable tourism practices, as well as on protecting its coral reefs, where no fishing is allowed. The Netherlands For more than 20 years, the Netherlands has had a national environmental plan in place and has met more than 70% of its goals to reduce air pollution, clean up rivers and improve waste management. The Netherlands has more than 15, 000 km of bike paths across the country, making it one of the world’s most bike-friendly nations. New Zealand Made up of two islands that both have a variety of sights, ecosystems and wildlife, New Zealand is leading the way in ecotourism, so you can experience the unique and amazing natural wonders of the islands, including natural caves, whale and dolphin watching, clean beaches and ancient forests in a responsible way. 21. What do Iceland and Palau have in common? A. They have volcanoes. B. They have lively forests. C. They are rich in heat resources. D. They allow fishing activities. 22. What is special about the Netherlands according to the passage? A. It has the most bike paths worldwide. B. It’s well known for natural hot springs. C. It has a long-term national green plan. D. It has achieved all its environmental goals. 23. What can visitors enjoy in New Zealand? A. Coral reef-cleaning. B. Dolphin-watching. C. Northern lights-seeing. D. Man-made cave-visiting. B Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high. I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces. Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is Ms. Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps.” My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr. V., my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student. 24. What did the author mainly write about in this passage? A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year. C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday. 25. What should students do when Ms. Compeau says "alligator"? A. Sit still. B. Stop talking. C. Listen to the teacher. D. Look at the blackboard. 26. How did the author find her first two classes? A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy. 27. Why did the author feel scared during the third period? A. Because she couldn't focus on her work. B. Because she found the class demanding. C. Because she didn't like the teacher. D. Because she did poorly at school. C Jeffrey Hall, a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU), has used his research to define the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He’s also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone’s acquaintance to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend. But it isn’t spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship — hours spent working together, for example, don’t count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone. “We have to put that time in,” Hall said. “You can’t make friends without any effort.” The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new environment. Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages: acquaintance, casual friend, friend and close friend. The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing. 28. How long does it take to turn an acquaintance into a friend? A. About 50 hours. B. About 90 hours. C. About 140 hours. D. About 200 hours. 29. What does the underlined part “that time” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Time spent working together. B. Time spent finding new friends. C. Time spent helping a new friend. D. Time spent doing fun things together. 30. Which may help deepen a friendship according to the study? A. Trying to understand your friend’s feelings. B. Enjoying quality time with your friend. C. Treating a new friend like a close one. D. Being generous to your friend. 31. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To solve a relationship problem. B. To introduce a teacher from KU. C. To present the findings of a new study. D. To discuss the importance of friendship. D Students who plan to use AI tools to write their college admission essays should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details like race or gender are included. Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30, 000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas. “The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer ideas about who they are, beyond all the structured information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant.” The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools. First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own article-writing positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.” 32. What is a problem about AI-written essays? A. They are short of a personal touch. B. They are always off-topic. C. They use many difficult words. D. They hardly describe an event in detail. 33. What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study? A. Its use. B. Its findings. C. Its researchers. D. Its background. 34. What does Lee advise high school students to do? A. Use AI tools to improve their writing. B. Turn to AI models for help anytime. C. Depend on AI models to write essays. D. Avoid using AI tools for any writing. 35. Which is the most suitable title for the passage? A. Can AI Influence Students in College Writing? B. Should Students Use AI Tools for College Essays? C. Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays? D.
