Sangam was 9 years old. He lived in Bangalore city. One thing about him made his parents worried. He could never be punctual (准时的) . Every day he got up late. Sometimes he missed his school bus. He was always the last in his class to finish lunch and schoolwork. He was even the last to get on the school bus in the evening. He was late for everything! His parents wanted him to know the importance (重要性) of time.
Last Sunday was his friend Shalini’s birthday. They held a big party in the countryside. It was 25 kilometres away from the city. So people needed to get up early to arrive there on time.
On Saturday night, Sangam’s parents told him to get ready on time. He just nodded (点头) and went to bed. The next day, Sangam woke up and found it was already 8 o’clock! He felt angry. He went down to the hall. His parents were watching TV happily there. He asked why they didn’t wake him up. They said they tried, but he didn’t get up. He felt terrible because he couldn’t go to the party.
His parents consoled (安慰) him. They said they would take him to watch his favourite movie. But they told him: this is what happens when you cannot keep to time.
This made him realize (意识到) his mistake. From then on, he got up on time and never missed his school bus again!

①Many countries have different opinions about animals. When it comes to pigs, most people share similar bad impressions. They believe pigs are ugly, lazy and stupid. However, pigs are much more wonderful than our old ideas.
②Just look at the idioms in Chinese. We have “Boiling a dead pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror (镜子) is still a pig”. And in English, they have “eating like a pig” and “till pigs can fly”. None of them are good.
③In fact, there are some good things about pigs. First, pigs are not stupid. Their IQ (智商) is like dogs and chimpanzees (黑猩猩). They can remember things for a long time. And some pigs can learn things from people. Second, pigs are very clean animals. On farms, they live in dirty places, so they are very dirty. In the wild (野外), pigs are very clean. Third, pigs are very friendly animals. Some people keep them as pets. Of course, people keep the small kind, not the big kind. Small pigs are very cute.
④There are cute pigs in cartoons, too. Peppa Pig, a UK cartoon, for example, has become popular in many countries. The four pigs in the cartoon teach children about love, friendship and family. In China, we have McDull, a pig who works hard to make his dream come true.
⑤All in all, we should not judge an animal only by old sayings. Pigs are smart, clean and lovely creatures. It is time for us to throw away our wrong opinions about them.
9. What can we know from the second paragraph?
A. Pigs like looking in a mirror. B. People like talking about pigs.
C. People in many countries dislike pigs. D. Pigs in two countries are ugly, lazy and stupid.
10. The writer thinks _________.
A. pigs are not very clever B. pigs are clean on farms
C. people can keep all pigs as pets D. pigs are not really what we often think of
11. What can we learn about pigs from the passage?
A. Pigs’ IQ is higher than dogs. B. Big pigs are people’s favourite pets.
C. Pigs can remember things for a long time. D. All idioms about pigs are good.
12. What is the structure (结构) of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1…)
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①②/③/④⑤ C. ①②/③④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤
D
A young gardener felt upset. His small greenhouse had been his pride and joy, where he spent hours every day looking after the plants. However, things went wrong recently. His beautiful rosebushes, which he hoped would bloom (开花) for the Spring Festival, showed no sign of flowers. Only a few weak and yellow leaves stayed on the branches.
“All my hard work has been useless.” he sighed and sat against the wall. That evening, an old gardener came and found the young man feeling hopeless.
Without saying anything, the old man picked up a trowel (小铲子) and loosened the soil around the roots (根部). He then cut off some of the weakest branches. The young man was shocked. “Stop! What are you doing? You’re killing my roses!” he shouted.
“Be patient,” the old man said calmly. “A rose can’t bloom if it has to support too many weak branches. It must let go of some load (负担) to gather strength. If you don’t do that, it will exhaust itself trying to keep every leaf alive.”
The young man hesitated (犹豫), then stepped back and watched. Weeks later, following the old man’s advice, the roses finally bloomed. At the end of spring, the whole greenhouse was full of beautiful red flowers and a sweet smell.
The young man smiled. He learned that cutting was not destruction (破坏), but a kind of creation. Sometimes in life, we need to cut away what weighs us down, not because we are giving up, but because we need to grow.
13. How is the story mainly organized?
A. In space order. B. In time order.
C. In the order of importance. D. In the order of places.
14. What did the old gardener do to help the rosebushes?
A. He watered the roses every day. B. He loosened soil and cut weak branches.
C. He added new flowers to the greenhouse. D. He built a new greenhouse for the roses.
15. How did the young gardener’s feelings change?
A. proud → shocked → calm. B. upset → patient → happy
C. hopeless → angry → pleased D. angry → relaxed → nervous
16. What can we learn from the story?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Working brings good luck.
C. Hard work makes success. D. Sometimes less brings more.

How to Be a Positive Friend

____19____ Sometimes your friend may feel unhappy because of homework or problems at home. Don’t just say “Don’t worry, everything will be fine.” That doesn’t help when he is sad. Ask him, “Do you want advice, or do you just want me to listen?” Then just stay with him.
