Art in safe hands
I’m Zhan Haojing, a high school student. I’m also a puppet performer. Look at this puppet. If I move my fingers, it will come to life!
I was born into a family of Minnan puppet performers. My grandpa and my mum are both among the best. When I was little, I loved the amazing stories they told with their hands. However, things changed when I became a teenager. I felt less close to the art because people thought puppets were too old-fashioned.
One day my mum showed me a performance by my grandpa’s teacher. The finely made puppets and their exciting movements brought back childhood memories. Then and there, my love for puppetry started to grow again. I posted my doubts about the future of puppetry online. To my surprise, the post was flooded with comments expressing warm feelings. A truth hit me — it was my responsibility to keep the art alive because the love for puppets was in my blood.
The art will be popular again if young people are interested in it. So I held a puppet show at school. When I finished, I saw something surprising: the students were completely lost in the show. Their eyes were glued to the puppets. After a warm cheer, they came to ask where they could see more.
The positive reply from the young viewers gave me more courage. Since then, my puppet shows have drawn more attention both from home and abroad. With more and more people joining in, I believe the special magic of this traditional art will last forever!

In a quiet Beijing workshop, skilled craftspeople are giving new life to Jingxiu. Jingxiu is a beautiful type of palace embroidery (刺绣). It was used on royal robes in the Ming and Qing dynasties. This ancient craft, which has a history of over 600 years, is now being
turned into cool accessories (配饰). 1
Designer Weng and her team study traditional patterns from museums and adapt them using creative methods. Their special flying swallow pin shows a great mix of old and new. They use a fancy gold-wrapped thread method. Real gold foil is carefully wrapped around silk threads. These are then attached to soft leather, turning historical art into comfortable jewelry. 2 Each swallow takes 1-2 days to make by hand.
3 The team uses meaningful symbols like peaches (for long life) and butterflies (for good luck), adding clever wordplay to attract younger buyers. “We balance traditional skills with modern style,” Weng explains.
Changing Jingxiu from flat embroidery to 3D wearables wasn’t easy. The team had a lot of problems. They tried many times to find materials that were both fancy and comfortable and would last. 4
A popular Jingxiu brand that started online recently opened its first real store. “People actually need to touch and see these items to truly value them,” says founder Wang. 5 The store also helps people understand the craft’s value.
Future plans include updating designs seasonally and hosting exhibitions mixing traditional crafts with modern art. “This space will connect past and present,” Wang adds, “keeping our culture alive for new generations.” This makes traditional art part of daily life.
A.It is making the old art more popular in modern times.
B.Gold thread techniques show the skills of ancient craftsmen
C.For example, they use machines to speed up (加快) production.
D.Special symbols make the designs meaningful to modern users.
E.The store lets customers (顾客) check details closely and learn about the craft’s history.
F.Another big problem was how to make more products while still keeping them handmade.
G.Over time, it became an important part of Chinese culture, showing the skills of craftspeople.

In the early 1400s, a Chinese translator named Ma Huan sailed to a place that seemed almost like a dream. He was traveling with Zheng He, whose giant ships had reached Hormuz (霍尔木兹). Ma Huan had a habit: he wrote down everything. When he returned home, he turned his notes into a book. For centuries, people read his words and wondered: Could any of this be true?
A Land of Wonders
Hormuz, Ma Huan wrote, was like nothing he had ever seen. Near the city stood a mountain with five different colors — red, yellow, white, and more. The soil itself seemed to shine. Even stranger, the local people made plates and bowls out of a special stone. When they served food on these plates, the food became salty. No need for salt shakers!
Ma Huan also saw women cover their faces with silk when they went out and businessmen from many countries trading in busy markets. What’s more, he noticed the kindness of the people. If someone fell on hard times, others would step in to help.
A Mystery for Centuries
For hundreds of years, historians didn’t know what to make of Ma Huan’s stories. A mountain with five colors? Plates that salted food? It sounded more like fairy tales than real history.
Then, in recent years, scientists took a closer look at Hormuz Island. What they found was surprising. The island really does have colorful mountains. The rocks are full of different minerals (矿物质), creating red, yellow, and white lines.
And the “salt plates”? They were real too. The local stone is actually rock salt. People in the region had cut it into bowls and plates for centuries. Ma Huan had been telling the truth all along.
Why He Matters Today
Today, Ma Huan’s book helps us see the past in a new way. He didn’t just write about kings and battles. He wrote about how ordinary people lived — what they ate, what they wore, how they treated each other.
His story reminds us that sometimes the most important person on a voyage isn’t the captain. It’s the quiet one with a notebook, paying attention to the small things that make a place special.
6. Which of the following best describes the people of Hormuz according to Ma Huan?
A. Rich but selfish. B. Strange and scary. C. Kind and helpful. D. Poor but honest.
7. Why did historians doubt Ma Huan’s stories for so long?
A. His book was lost for many years.
B. His descriptions sounded unbelievable.
C. He couldn’t speak the local language.
D. Other travelers disagreed with him.
8. In the last paragraph, the writer mentions “the quiet one with a notebook” to show that ________.
A. Captains are not as important as translators.
B. Taking notes is the most difficult job.
C. Ordinary people’s records can be valuable.
D. Writers speak louder than soldiers.
9. Which “make of” has the same meaning as the underlined one in Paragraph 5?
A. I don’t know what to make of his strange behavior.
B. These old chairs are made of bamboo and they are cool to sit on in summer.
C. The bad news was made up of lies and wrong information.
D. We should make the best of our time every day.
10. Which best describes the way the writer develops the passage?
A. By telling events in time order.
B. By presenting a mystery and then proving the truth.

Designer Weng and her team study traditional patterns from museums and adapt them using creative methods. Their special flying swallow pin shows a great mix of old and new. 3 The team uses meaningful symbols like peaches (for long life) and butterflies (for good luck), adding clever wordplay to attract younger buyers. “We balance traditional skills with modern style,” Weng explains.
