It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Union Station, waiting for the train. There were many people inside the waiting hall. A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face and dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless. “He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.
Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple(夫妇) walked towards him. “Excuse me,” the man said. “My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He gave the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction(方向) he looked, I saw an old man in a worn sweater, worn trousers and shoes with holes, entering the hall.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old man to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it over the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A gentleman gave me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He put the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer. “Sure, son, but a sandwich is enough for me. It’s too much for a man at my age.” Hearing the old man’s words, we were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Then Mum and Dad went up to those in rags, “Excuse me…”
I rushed into a nearby restaurant and took out my pocket money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than ever.

We often face the following situations in our daily life:
- The woman next door plays the piano after 12 o’clock at night.
- The family across the street never cleans up their yard. The rubbish is smelly.
- The man next door always parks his car in front of your drive.
Have things like these ever happened to you? If so, you may ask yourself, “Who are these people? Why are they doing these things to me?”
These days, many people don’t know their neighbours. Sometimes we share a friendly smile or say hello, but lots of people don’t even know their neighbours’ names! When you don’t know someone, it’s easy to be angry when something that you think is unfair has happened. You think, “Maybe they like to make me angry” or “Maybe they do it on purpose.” Believe it or not, your neighbours probably don’t mean to irritate(激怒) you. Often, they don’t even know that they’re making you feel angry. So before you take unusual steps to fix the problem, you should discuss it with them first.
When you move towards your neighbours, you should talk to them in a friendly manner(态度). Praise their children to make them feel good. Then explain the situation. And if you can think of a simple way to solve the problem, suggest it.
If talking doesn’t work, you can ask another person to help. This person can listen to the story of both sides and help you and your neighbour solve the problem.
Finally, sometimes it’s a good idea to avoid the problem. Depending on the problem, it might be best to just stay out of your neighbour’s way.

( )11. When talking with your neighbours, you can make them have a good feeling by _________ .

It’s the world’s largest palace made of wood. It lived through fires and wars. But it still stands at the heart of Beijing today.

Around 500 students from middle schools across Moose Jaw, Canada, took part in a fun event. They learnt how to be good with money.
First, every student had to imagine they had a job. Then they got a card. It showed how much money they had.
Next, they visited different booths(摊位) to buy things. This way, the students learnt that their spending depended on their salary(薪水).
The idea was to teach the students about real life and to be smart with money. “They have to go out and use their budget(预算) smartly and make good decisions,” said Heather Bergdahl from the local Chamber of Commerce(商会).
Athan Schultz is a student from Cornerstone Christian School. “It’s eye-opening to see how much money you spend each month,” he told Moose Jaw Today. “You think you actually have a lot of money, but soon you realise you don’t.”
“I used to spend a lot of money on small things, which were not necessary. For example, I bought cards, all kinds of cards. They cost me too much. However, I didn’t look after them. Later, I just threw them away. This event teaches me a lot—every penny counts. In the future, I will try to spend money wisely,” Bruce, another student told the reporter.

In our lives, we sometimes become upset and worried about something. However, if we face the problems with a positive attitude, we can not only find solutions to our problems, but also learn valuable lessons about life.
I remember the day when I failed a maths test. I was sad and felt disappointed in myself. However, instead of crying over my mistakes, I decided to change the situation with a positive attitude. I analysed my weak points and asked my teacher and classmates for help. With their guidance and support, I had a better understanding of the subject and achieved better results in the following tests.
This experience helped me grow as a person. It made me realise that every failure is a chance for personal improvement, and that a positive attitude can lead to better results and pleasure.
