Half a Life Half Way Around the World
I lived the first two decades of my life in America and the next two in China. It is a strange
fecling to know your own country only as a chlhland to become an adult on foreign 66
I experienced very little culture67 upon arriving in 1998 because I knew very little
about China.I had no expectations.Just live and leam.I arrived in China as a college student at
Nanjing University.
On my first day living at the student dormitory,I went downstairs to the convenience store to
buy a(n)68 of chips.I came back.five minutes later to buy a Coke.As a joke,I said to the
cashicr,'Long time no scel"She 69 corrected me and said."No,you were here five
minutes ago."That was lesson number one in China:irony does not
Soon after,a local friend invited me to his house for my first ever lunch in a Chinese home.
His father finished eatina first, put down his bowl and chopsticks and said to me manman chi(Eat
slowly").I was71 I didn't realise this was part of Chinese tabla manners. He wanted to
express that just because he was done eating,I should not feel7 finish.I thought,"Am
I eating too fast? Why does he care about the speed at which I eat?"After tney explained it to me,I
learned my second important lesson:to learn the language, one has to learn the culture
I had already studied the language for three years before I came to China, but there was so
much I didn't understand.
Why were people putting food into my rice bowl? Why were people at the table telling me
when I could and couldn't drink my cup of becr? Why was it okay for everyone to spit things out
73
onto the table, but they covered up their mouths with their free hand when using a toothpick
to be polite?
Living my adult life in a foreign country has become a lifelong Icaming process.Chinese
74
have now bccome my own.Thev are so deeply 75
in my daily routine that I do not
think aoout them.
And it's not Just the little things. The way I see society, govemment, and personal relationships
has all changed. The culture shock happens when I go back to America.

Private Schools are Strict
It's not 76 to hear private school graduates who come back from their first year at
college saying that it was easier than high school.Private schools are strict, and demand a lot from
students. These high_77 result in students developing strong work ethic(职业道德),Private
schools often require that students participate in two or three sports and afterschool activities, while
also offering clubs and activities78 their academics. This heavy schedule means time
79 and work-life balance are skills that students can master before college.
Private Schools are Diverse
Private schools typically offer more diversity than public schools,as these schools tend to
80 students from not just one town.Boarding schools go even81,welcoming students
from all over the world. These 82 perspectives on current events, and lifestyles can broaden
personal understanding of the world.
Boarding School Students Learn Independence
Students who attend a boarding school receive an even better preview of college life.Students
in boarding school live in 83 on campus, instead of at home with their families. From
laundry and room cleanlincss to waking up on time and balancing work and social life, boarding
schools challenge students to make 84 decisions.
Private Schools Provide Personal Attention
Most private schools boast small class sizes. At private schools,an average class size is often
between 12 and 15 students. These smaller class sizes, which sometimes have more than one teacher,
85 in kindergarten and primary school programs, mean more personal attention for students,no
back row,and no chance of getting86 in discussions.Private school teachers are also
expected to be available outside of normal class times for87 help.
Private Schools Help Students Apply to College
Another benefit of private schools is the 88 students reccive in the college application
process. As juniors, and sometimes even as freshmen or sophomores, students begin to work with
qualified college counsellors. From providing help with research colleges and universities to review
financial aids and 89,college counsellors work to help students find the schools that will
help them succeed. With more than 5,000 colleges and universities in the United States, college
counselling services can be 90 to students.

Section B(22')
Directions:Read the following three passages.Choose the one that fits best according to the
information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
We recently went to a friend's backyard to mect her new puppy. He was lovely beyond words.
Our friend was wearing smiles as she told us about his first days at home.It was truly puppy love.
Later that night,I walked behind my own dog to help her climb up the stairs, and heated up
the homemade food that helps control her kiduey (disease. You can't imagine these extra cares
when you began raising a puppy. For me,I am lucky to know this more"mature"love. To love, and
to be loved,by an old dog is truly an honor.
For a long time,I denied the fact that our dog was getting old,or I really didn't notice that
Skyter was getting older. But these days, there is no denying the fact.Sometimes, she will fall while
eating from her bowl and wait patiently for somcone to help her up.
I still remember the first days of Skyler. In the home, she always necded to be beside somconc,
with at least one part of her touching one part of you.At the park,it was different. If we started
running toward the end of a field, she would cross the finish linc before we had even made it halfway.
Now,at 15,Skyler still needs to be right beside you on the couch. But it is hard.It is sad to
see this once fast, strong dog struggle to walk up the front steps or to see her begging eyes whenever
she needs help to get up on the couch.Over the past few years,we have had to give up certain family
trips because we wanted to take care of her at home.
However,I know this experience has taught our children about sacrifice and unconditional
love.It has taught me the same.Dogs give us unconditional love. The least we can do is give it back.
There will likely be times of great sadness and hardship, but in the end,you will feel very lucky for
the time you have together.

(C)
The term culture now is more used to deseribe everything from the fine arts to the outlook of
a business group or a sports team.In its original sense, however, culture includes all identifying
aspects of a racial group,nation,or empire:its physical environment,history,and traditions,its
social rules and economic structure, and its religious beliefs and arts.
The central beliefs and customs of a group are handed down from one generation to another. It
is for this reason that most people regard culture as leamned rather than innate.People acquire a
culture because they are not born with one.The process by which a person develops a taste for
regional foods, accented specch,or an attitude towards the world over time, therefore,is known as
enculturation.
Cultures are often identified by their symbols-images that are familiar and coated with
meaning.Totem poles (carved with animals and creative figures suggest aspects of the
Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest but more literally represent specific tribes. In
Asia and India, the color of yellow is connected with temples while in ancient China it was a color
only the emperor's family was allowed to wear. Thus, different cultures may respond to a symbol
quite differentiy.For example,to some a flag may represent pride,historical accomplishments,or
ideals;to others, however,it can mean danger or oppression.
To individuals unfamiliar with cultures outside their own,the beliefs, behaviors, and artistic
expression of other groups can seem strange and even threatening.A society that judges all other
cultures against its own standards is considered to be ethnocentric.A strongly ethnocentric society
assumes also that what is different from its own culture is likely to be inferior and, possibly, wrong
or evil.
第10页,共12页
All people are ethnocentric to some degrec, and some aspects of ethnocentrism, such as
national pride,contribute to a well-functioning society.An appreciation for one's own culture,
however, does not prevent acceptance and respect for another culture.History documents the long-
term vigour and success of multicultural groups in which people from numerous and various cultural
backgrounds live and work together.Extreme ethnocentrism,in contrast, can lead to racism-the
belief that it is race and racial origin that account for yariations in human character or ability and
that one's own race is superior to all others.
98.The underlined word "innate"in paragraph 2 most probably means
A.avoidable
B.developed
C.managed
D.inbom
99.Which of the following best describes the development of paragraph 3?
A.From symbols used in ancient religious settings to symbols used in modem political settings.
B.From symbols understood in the same way worldwide to symbols limited by culture.
C.From symbols shaped by particular cultures to symbols open to competing readings.
D.From symbols learned through cultural spread to symbols judged by ethnocentric standards.
100.What makes extreme ethnocentrism different from the ethnocentrism shared by most people?
A It appreciates various cultures and treats all cultures as equally worthy.
B.It is based on national pride and contributes to a well-functioning society.
C.It may develop into racism and a belief in one's own racial superiority.
D.It denics the value of one's own culture and rejects all forms of cultural loyalty.
101.Which statement may the author support most?
A.All aspects of ethnocentrism can produce negative effects on a society.
B.Countries with a strong sense of national pride play a superior role in the world.
C.Racism is unlikely to bring about serious conflicts among different cultures.
D.Respect and acceptance of different cultures are a proper cultural attitude.
Section C(8)

Each sentence can only be used once.Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
A.This means that people who play video games show more brain activity.
B.Compared with scrolling through videos on YouTube, playing video games surely makes brain
more active.
C.However,a new study has revealed that video games might be good for brain development in
young pcople.
D.Not all of gaming's effects on the brain are positive despite the activated brain.
E.The scientists are hoping to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track
the effects of gaming.
F They were shown pictures of people's faces and then,a bit later, were shown more and had to
say if any of the faces were the same.
Good News for Gamers
第11页,共12页
Video games can sometimes have a bad reputation because they keep people indoors and
looking at a screen instead of talking and playing with others face to fnce.102
Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive
Development(ABCD)scheme, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the
US as they move into adulthood. The results were taken from 2,217 children aged nine or 10.They
were divided into two groups:young people who never play video games and those who play them
for three or more hours a day.
The young pcople were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction times by secing
how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test involved
using their mcmory.10:During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI,which uses
magnets to measure brain activity.
The people who played video games were consistently better at the two tasks, and the fMRI
scans showed that they also had more activity in the parts of their brains that look after memory and
attention.10.However,it's important to note that researchers don't yet know if gaming
improved their memory and reactions,or if they already had good memories and reactions and
therefore enjoyed gaming and played a lot.
105 The team could also perhaps find out in future if particular types of video games
affect pcopie s brain activity differently. The lead scientist on the study,Bader Chaarani says that
too much screcn time is not good for pcople's mental well-being or physical health. It is still very
important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and
family.
