When I first started working with Kevin Sargeant, he was a freshman in high school, and I was his science teacher. I knew even then that he was a bright young man with great potential, and a hunger for learning. But he struggled to apply what he had learned due to his autism (自闭症).
Diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症) in elementary school, Kevin scored well on tests. However, a huge part of school learning takes place not at a student’s individual desk, but in groups that require participation. For children like Kevin, that presents a big challenge.
For a long time, we struggled to persuade Kevin to come out of his shell and join the class. He preferred doing activities alone, and hated classroom tasks that required teamwork, like lab experiments. He struggled with public speaking even in small groups, and didn’t want to try new things.
You could tell that there was huge potential there — I never doubted his academic abilities. But at times many of us at the school worried about whether he’d ever be able to make full use of those abilities to build a future for himself. Over time, however, something changed. Slowly he began to want to try new things, and to work with people. He developed into a boy of humor, and started to participate in class and to let people get to know him. And he was gradually into the high school’s work-based learning program, where he learned about information technology — an area Kevin is always gifted in. In fact, in some ways, I think it was his experience with computers that brought him out of himself and helped him join the world. Finding something he was good at gave him the confidence he’d so badly needed.
4. What challenge did Kevin Sargeant have to face in school at first?
A. He had low intelligence. B. He lacked the love for learning.
C. He wasn’t used to team work. D. He couldn’t make friends with kids.
5. Which of the following words can best describe the changing Kevin?
A. Kind and open-minded. B. Talented and responsible.
C. diligent and dependent. D. Humorous and outgoing.
6. According to the author, what led to Kevin’s change?
A. His experience with computers. B. His teacher’s encouragement.
C. The requirement of teachers. D. The work-based learning program.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. A Lonely Talented Boy B. Out of the shell into the Sunshine
C. The Magic of Computers D. Strength from the Surrounding World
C
Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise help stimulate (刺激) the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help max learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental fur scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial (空间的) learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating (表明) that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
8. What did the new study aim to explore?
A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health.
C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active.
9. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment?
A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises.
C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature.
10. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later?
A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested.
C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks.
11. What might the author’s marathon running prove?
A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart.
C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.
D
People make a choice to volunteer for their community, but making it a graduation requirement takes away the meaning of volunteerism. Many states require students to perform a set number of volunteer hours to graduate. With recent talks about implementing (实施) this in Virginia City Public Schools, a critical question arises: if volunteering is mandatory (强制性的), is it truly volunteering?
Required or not, volunteering helps other people who are in need and helps the community as a whole. Requiring students to volunteer will increase the number of people who serve their community, but people volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts. They should not be forced to volunteer by someone else. “When students are told what to do or think, they lose drive to do it because their beliefs are ignored,” according to Brillianto’s article “Why Volunteering Should Not Be a Requirement.”
Another problem with forced volunteerism is that not all students have transportation. “I don’t think it should be required to graduate. I think it should be a choice like it already is, because some people just don’t have the ability or transportation to do that” said sophomore Leila Alpaugh.
“Quality over quantity” also comes into play when it comes to volunteering. If forced to volunteer, some students who don’t care about the cause will weaken the passion of others who do, and it can end up causing problems for the organization and others who volunteer there.
So, instead of making volunteering a requirement, schools should encourage students to talk to a guidance counselor (辅导员) about current service projects they could take part in.
12. What makes volunteering less meaningful?
A. Limited service choices. B. Linking it to graduation.
C. Boring volunteer classes. D. Recording service hours.
13. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. Forced volunteering helps few people. B. Forced volunteering becomes common.
C. Volunteers’ real thoughts matter. D. Schools’ rules have bad effects.
14. What does the author show by mentioning “transportation”?
A. The importance of enough choices. B. The benefit in serving strangers.
C. The trouble in reaching an agreement. D. The unfairness of forced volunteering.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward forced volunteering?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Guarded. D. Negative.
