Pickleball is now one of the fastest-growing sports, and it’s tons of fun. It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net at the center. Each end of the court has a kitchen (the non-volley zone; volley is a hit of the ball before it touches the ground). Follow these simple rules and I bet you’ll be out playing doubles pickleball in no time.
#1: Each rally (往返拍击) begins with a serve
The game starts with a serve. In doubles, the player on the right side of their court always starts the serve. You serve crosscourt to your opponent.
The serving player can either hit the ball after it bounces or out of the air and the serve must avoid landing in the kitchen or on its line. When hitting a volley serve, your paddle (球拍) must move in an upward path.
#2: The ball must bounce once on each side before either team can volley
Before any player can hit a shot out of the air, the ball must bounce once on each side. So, if your partner is serving and you start up at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position, because the returning team can hit a shot right at you. If you react with a volley, it’s considered a fault and you’ll lose the point because you don’t let the ball bounce first on your side. (*A point is a unit of scoring that can only be won by the serving team.)
#3: Each point continues until a fault
After the serve, play continues until a rally is won either by someone hitting a winning shot or a fault is committed. A fault ends the rally. In pickleball, there are some basic fault types:
The ball lands in the kitchen. The ball lands out of bounds (behind the baseline or outside the sideline). The ball hits the net and falls on your side. The ball bounces twice on one side before the player can return it.
(To Be Continued)
1. When your partner is serving, you are not advised to start at the kitchen because ______.
A. you will definitely lose this set
B. your partner is likely to be hit
C. the ball won’t bounce on the other side
D. your opponent is likely to gain a point
2. According to #3, which pictures show faults?
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ①④
3. Where may you find this article?
A. On an official document of sports classification.
B. From a profile of the sports’ inventor.
C. At the “How-To” section of a sports website.
D. In a journal on sports science.

Filling your cup isn’t easy. We live in an age where exhaustion is worn like a badge, and burnout is celebrated. When you’re a business owner, rest simply doesn’t happen unless you schedule it in.
When I started my business, I was already a mother and a wife, and it took destroying my health for me to learn how to fill my cup. Like many others, I became an entrepreneur (企业家) because I was after flexibility — which is why, when I woke up four years later with a medically-prescribed heart rate monitor and a severe anxiety diagnosis, I knew that everything was about to collapse around me. I handed the business over to one of my managers and walked away from everything I had built. From then on, learning how to fill my cup became the change that brought me to my happily ever after.
Today, I coach small businesses and one of the most important survival strategies I consider a must-have for entrepreneurs is figuring out how to refill your cup. There’s no one-size-fits-all. Some people might love a bubble bath, but others might not. As your needs change, so should the way you refill your cup.
I teach people to rebuild a connection to themselves by paying attention to what they’re really needing. It often appears in the words that follow “I am”. When you start seeing the statement “I am” as a boundary, it changes everything. Take a simple phrase, like “I am tired”. Instead of simply seeing that as a statement, recognize the need behind it — rest. Adjust your day’s agenda to the needs behind those “I am” statements. If you haven’t rested enough, you can postpone office work and take a screen-free walk in nature instead.
These days, I build daily rhythms that keep my cup full. I enjoy using essential oils in my office, walking along the beach, spending time with friends who also run businesses, and sharing family responsibilities with my husband. These practices aren’t luxuries; they are survival strategies that allow me to show up fully for my clients, my family, and myself.
4. Why did the author decide to give up running her business?
A. She preferred a free lifestyle without restrictions.
B. Her health problems pressed her to make a shift in lifestyle.
C. She intended to work full-time as a professional coach.
D. Her wish was to commit to her family.
5. What can we learn about “I am” statements in paragraph 4?
A. They urge people to reflect on past rests.
B. They allow people to identify their real needs.
C. They help people to express themselves clearly.
D. They teach people to control their emotions.
6. According to the text, “refill your cup” most probably refers to _________.
A. an escape from reality B. a gain in energy and mental well-being
C. a focus on social bonds D. a pursuit of fixed daily routines
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Positive Thinking B. Life After Entrepreneurial Burnout
C. Recharging Yourself in a Right Way D. A Better Way to Organize Your Day
C
Like many, you might have puzzled over contemporary art, such as a giant folk sculpture. In her book Get the Picture, journalist Bianca Bosker addresses the age-old question “What is art?” She goes to great lengths to find the answer, offering a participatory journey into the art world and revealing its spiritual rewards.
Bosker sets out to develop what art students call an “Eye,” the ability to separate the “good” art from the “bad.” To do this, she dives deep into the art community, working as a gallery assistant, art-fair seller, studio helper and museum security guard to examine art from different angles. She discovers that the art world often excludes those who can’t afford to go to art school or create passion projects. Practitioners (专业人员) often take on multiple jobs to make ends meet; many eventually quit from burnout. Yet, she also reveals the basic joy that art can bring to both creators and viewers.
Bosker’s exploration continues with neuroaesthetics, the application of neuroscience to study the perception of art. Researchers have demonstrated that seeing is often secondary to believing — a “filter of expectation” in our brain twists the raw data stream of light that hits our eyes. This filter allows us to ignore certain visual details to rapidly process our disorderly environment. This is why we know a white vase next to the window is still white, even as natural light transforms its exact color to sunset golden or moonlight gray throughout the day.
One fundamental function of art, Bosker writes, is to remove this filter to re-inspect the world with renewed wonder. Art has a therapeutic (治疗的) quality, a fact that’s seized upon by doctors who recommend patients visit art museums. Removing that filter can also help doctors themselves. Studies have shown that medical trainees who take an art-based course perform more integrative physical examinations and read human facial expressions better than those who don’t.
In the end, readers don’t get a complete answer to humankind’s strong desire for art. Bosker instead offers her own interpretation: Art is a way to find beauty and heighten our appreciation for life. In exposing the blind faith in the “Eye”, Bosker argues that art is everywhere and can be anything, as long as we’re open to letting what we see move us. By the last page, you’ll be forced to revisit that folk sculpture and see the artwork with fresh eyes.
8. How did Bosker gain her understanding of art?
A. By pursuing her calling in art. B. By learning from practitioners.
C. By registering for art classes. D. By fitting into the art circles.
9. What can be inferred about the “filter of expectation” in our brains?
A. It shapes the idea of what beauty is. B. It enables us to see clearly in chaos.
C. It leads to a subjective view on things. D. It makes us more sensitive to colors.
10. What is a basis for art’s therapeutic quality?
A. Art has proved to be an effective cure. B. Art can bring changes in perspectives.
C. Art has been widely employed by doctors. D. Art enriches people’s spiritual world.
11. What is Bosker’s attitude towards the faith in “Eye”?
A. Challenging B. Favourable C. Dismissive D. Objective
D
Some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence are being worked on not by computer scientists but by philosophers. The philosophers are tasked with making the next generation of models more capable and reliable, but they also shed light on the mystery of consciousness.
Jonathan Birch at the London School of Economics and Political Science says AI companies are the big employers of philosophy PhDs right now. “Topics that have been researched in philosophy departments for decades — how to make rational decisions, what counts as reasoning, what counts as evidence of consciousness — are suddenly of massive value to AI companies,” says Birch.
One of the key tasks for this crop of philosophers is alignment, the AI industry term for efforts to stop harmful content — such as revealing instructions on how to make bombs. Efforts to stop AI models giving dangerous outputs were initially focused around putting in simple black-and-white guardrails (护栏), such as forbidding a model from talking about bombs entirely. But these proved clumsy and easy to circumvent. Now, companies are pursuing more advanced methods which lean heavily on philosophical understanding of right and wrong.
However, it’s rarely straightforward. Researchers have found that if you tell a model to break a rule in one specific situation, it will start breaking lots of other rules, says Shane Glackin at the University of Exeter in the UK. And understanding why is exactly the sort of problem that philosophy’s logical analysis can crack.
Mahrad Almotahari at the University of Edinburgh sees value in philosophy expertise for technology firms, but is sceptical that the toughest questions of machine consciousness will be answered by them. Others see a potential problem on the horizon, with industry hiring philosophers eventually leading to biased research that serves the interests of technology companies.
“I wish we had made more progress on the big questions of philosophy before the arrival of AI. If we had, we would have been better prepared. AI has now given these questions massive urgency, and yet, the answers still seem far away,” says Birch.
12. What phenomenon is presented in the first two paragraphs?
A. Computer scientists are losing their jobs.
B. Philosophers outperform computer scientists.
C. Philosophy PhDs are favored in the job market.
D. AI companies are turning to philosophy for help.
13. What does the underlined word “circumvent” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Take over. B. Get around. C. Pick up. D. Push forward.
14. How do the training methods of large language models shift?
A. From theory analysis to practical use. B. From technical fixes to logical analysis.
C. From rigid rules to moral reasoning. D. From simple tasks to complex situations.
15. What question does the text center on?
A. Will philosophers win in the battle for better AI?
B. Can the problems in AI be solved by philosophy?
C. How can philosophers transform the AI industry?
D. Why do AI companies prefer philosophers to coders?

Leo was not excited about spending his Saturday afternoons at the Oakwood Nursing Home. It was a requirement for his high school graduation, but to him, the place smelled like old medicine and boredom. He usually spent his shifts doing the bare minimum: passing out water cups and avoiding eye contact.
His least favorite resident was Mr. Henderson, a grumpy (暴躁的) 80-year-old man who always sat in a wheelchair in the far corner of the recreation room. Mr. Henderson never smiled, never joined the group activities, and frequently complained about the “noisy teenagers”. Leo made sure to keep his distance, annoyed by the constant complaints. Yet there was one thing Leo had noticed about the old man. Mr. Henderson always kept a small, worn-out songbook on his lap.
One stormy Saturday, the nursing home was hosting its monthly music hour. The residents were gathered in the hall, eagerly waiting for the local volunteer band to arrive. However, at 2:00 p.m., the activity coordinator (协调员), Sarah, rushed in looking panicked. “The band’s bus broke down on the way here,” she announced, her voice shaking slightly. “They can’t make it.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the room. Some residents sighed heavily; others lowered their heads. Sarah looked around helplessly, her eyes landing on an old, dusty piano in the corner of the room. “Does anyone know how to play?” she asked the room.
Leo froze. He had been playing the piano since he was six and was exceptionally good at it. But the thought of playing in front of a crowd terrified him. He looked at the floor, hoping nobody would notice him. But then, he glanced up at the residents. For the first time, Leo didn’t see a room full of annoying strangers. He saw disappointed people who had been looking forward to this small moment of joy. His eyes stopped at Mr. Henderson, noticing the usual anger had disappeared from his face. Instead, he was staring silently at the empty piano.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
At that moment, Leo made a decision.

根据#2中的“So, if your partner is serving and you start up at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position, because the returning team can hit a shot right at you. If you react with a volley, it’s considered a fault and you’ll lose the point because you don’t let the ball bounce first on your side.(所以,如果你的搭档正在发球,而你站在“厨房”区域,你就处于危险的位置,因为接发方可以直接把球朝你击来。如果你出于反应直接截击,这就会被判为失误,你方会丢掉这一分,因为你没有让球先在你方场地弹跳。)”可知,你站在非截击区容易犯规丢分,对手会得分。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据#3规则下列举的失误类型“The ball lands in the kitchen. The ball lands out of bounds (behind the baseline or outside the sideline). The ball hits the net and falls on your side. The ball bounces twice on one side before the player can return it.(球落在了“厨房”区域;球出界(落在底线之后或者边线之外);球碰到网之后落在你方场地;球在某一侧场地弹跳了两次,球员才将球击回。)”
结合第一段中的“Follow these simple rules and I bet you'll be out playing doubles pickleball in no time. (遵循这些简单的规则,我敢打赌你很快就能上场打双打匹克球了。)”可知,文章是教读者如何打匹克球,这类入门教学内容最可能出现在体育网站的“入门教程”板块。

A Better Way to Organize Your Day
B 5. B 6. B 7. C

根据第二段中的“Like many others, I became an entrepreneur (企业家) because I was after flexibility — which is why, when I woke up four years later with a medically-prescribed heart rate monitor and a severe anxiety diagnosis, I knew that everything was about to collapse around me. I handed the business over to one of my managers and walked away from everything I had built. (像许多人一样,我成为企业家是因为追求灵活性——正因如此,四年后当我戴着医生开具的心率监测器醒来,并被诊断出严重焦虑症时,我知道周围的一切都要崩塌了。我把生意交给了我的一个经理,然后离开了自己建立的一切。)”可知,作者决定放弃经营自己的企业是因为健康问题迫使她改变生活方式。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“When you start seeing the statement ‘I am’ as a boundary, it changes everything. Take a simple phrase, like ‘I am tired’. Instead of simply seeing that as a statement, recognize the need behind it — rest. (当你开始把‘我是’这样的陈述看作一种边界时,一切都会改变。举个简单的例子,比如‘我累了’。不要仅仅把它看作一个陈述,要认识到它背后的需求——休息。)”可推断出,“I am”这类表述能帮助人们识别自己的真实需求。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Today, I coach small businesses and one of the most important survival strategies I consider a must-have for entrepreneurs is figuring out how to refill your cup. There’s no one-size-fits-all. Some people might love a bubble bath, but others might not. As your needs change, so should the way you refill your cup.(如今,我为小型企业提供咨询服务,我认为创业者必备的最重要的生存策略之一就是弄清楚如何refill your cup。
和最后一段中的“These days, I build daily rhythms that keep my cup full.(如今,我建立起日常作息,让自己始终精力充沛。)”
Objective
D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中的“To do this, she dives deep into the art community, working as a gallery assistant, art-fair seller, studio helper and museum security guard to examine art from different angles. (为此,她深入艺术圈,担任画廊助理、艺博会销售员、工作室帮手和博物馆保安,从不同角度审视艺术。)”可知,Bosker通过融入艺术圈来获得对艺术的理解。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Researchers have demonstrated that seeing is often secondary to believing — a “filter of expectation” in our brain twists the raw data stream of light that hits our eyes. This filter allows us to ignore certain visual details to rapidly process our disorderly environment.(研究人员已经证明,眼见往往不如相信重要——我们大脑中的“期望过滤器”扭曲了进入我们眼睛的原始光线数据流。这个过滤器让我们忽略某些视觉细节,以便快速处理混乱的环境。)”可推断出,这个“期望过滤器”使我们看待事物时带有主观色彩。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“One fundamental function of art, Bosker writes, is to remove this filter to re-inspect the world with renewed wonder.(博斯克写道,艺术的一个核心功能,就是帮我们移除大脑里的这个预期过滤器,带着全新的好奇感重新审视整个世界)”可知,艺术能够改变人们看待事物的视角,这是其具备治疗作用的基础。
根据最后一段中的“In exposing the blind faith in the “Eye”, Bosker argues that art is everywhere and can be anything, as long as we’re open to letting what we see move us.(在揭露对“眼光”盲目崇拜的同时,Bosker认为艺术无处不在,可以是任何东西,只要我们愿意敞开心扉,让所见之物打动我们。)”

D 13. B 14. C 15. B

注意:
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Mark,
Thanks for sharing the disqualified photo case with me. I totally agree with the decision. Photography contests value the real skills and personal experiences of photographers. AI-generated works lack the unique emotions and efforts that come from capturing moments by oneself. What matters most in photography is the true feelings behind each picture.
If AI works are allowed, it will be unfair to those who spend time practicing shooting. It also goes against the original purpose of the contest. I believe that only through our own lenses can we show the beauty of life.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
At that moment, Leo made a decision.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
At that moment, Leo made a decision. He took a deep breath and walked to the piano. His hands trembled slightly as he sat down, but when his fingers touched the keys, a familiar tune filled the room. He began to play a classic song. The residents were startled at first, but soon they were immersed in the beautiful music. Some closed their eyes, savoring the moment, while others nodded gently with the rhythm. Mr. Henderson also leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on Leo, as if he was trying to recall something.
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music. It was Mr. Henderson. He opened his mouth, and although his voice was not as clear as it used to be, it carried a deep emotion. He sang with all his heart. Other residents also joined in, and the room was filled with the harmonious sound of music and singing. Leo was deeply moved, and his fingers became more and more dexterous on the keys. At that moment, the storm outside seemed to fade away, and only the warmth and joy in the room remained.
