While some young people may know little about the value of money, many have learned it through different kinds of financial (金融的) education.
In modern society, more and more people use mobile phones to pay for things instead of cash. Without an exact understanding of money, many young people may not fully understand that mobile payment also uses real money. For example, an 11-year-old boy in the UK spent more than £2,000 on an online game, without thinking about the real financial influence of his mobile payment. So young people who have grown up in cashless societies may have ▲ understanding of the value of money.
However, understanding financial knowledge is not a talent, and everyone can have this ability through learning. With the help of parents, children can develop a habit of saving and learn to manage their own money. Some parents do so through piggy banks and savings accounts. Other parents may use electronic red envelopes to encourage their children to use apps to save money and record their own spending.
Also, young people can further develop their understanding of the value of money through schools and governments. Schools can play an important role in teaching financial skills to students. In Denmark, students in grades seven to nine must take financial education. Governments can also give help to the young through programs and activities. For example, Singapore’s national financial education programme, MoneySense, developed a new activity to offer people financial knowledge through educational programs on television.

When Wang Hong accepted the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖) in 2026, many people in China felt proud. The prize is described as one of the highest honors in mathematics. But for Wang, the road to that moment was not a straight line. It looked more like the famous “needle” (针) in the Kakeya conjecture (挂谷猜想): it kept turning, testing new directions before finding enough space.
Wang grew up in Pingle County, Guangxi. At four, her arm was badly hurt by boiling water. Her parents always took her to hospital. Because her skin was sensitive (敏感的) to light, she spent much time indoors. Instead, the difficult experience helped her learn how to read alone. In primary school, she skipped (跳过) two grades.
Her father, a maths teacher, opened the door to numbers for her. Wang later said maths was one way for her to understand the world. As a child, she was excited when she solved a problem. Her parents did not push her along a fixed road. They gave her freedom, which became an important kind of support.
At middle school, She loved asking questions and sometimes thought about easy problems in surprisingly complex (复杂的) ways. She was younger than most classmates. Once, a classmate laughed at her for raising her hand too often. Her teacher Tang Nianhua comforted her and helped her join a “Daily Problem” group, where her mathematical thinking grew sharper.
At Peking University, her road was not smooth either. Later in MIT, She even stopped maths for a while and explored art and architecture (建筑).
In the end, she returned. “In mathematics, I can freely build anything.” she once said. Years of doubt, detours (弯路) and repeated trying did not pull her away from the problem. They helped her come back to it with a stronger mind. When fame finally arrived, Wang remained low-key (低调). Her advice to students was simple: if you gain something in the end, it does not matter whether you are faster or slower. Do not rush. Take your time.
9. Why does the writer compare Wang Hong’s life to the “needle” in the Kakeya conjecture?
A. Because she never gave up even when she faced difficulties.
B. Because she was very thin and small when she was young.
C. Because she liked to solve hard problems.
D. Because she changed directions several times before finally finding her way.
10. What can we infer about the freedom Wang’s parents gave her?
A. It helped her develop the habit of thinking about problems in surprising ways.
B. It showed that they trusted her to make decisions about her own studies.
C. It allowed her to develop her own interests without being pushed into a fixed path.
D. It allowed her to skip grades and enter different schools at a young age.
11. What do we know about Wang Hong’s middle school life?
A. She was taught by her parents to think in unusual ways.
B. She showed a habit of thinking differently from others about simple questions.
C. She was often laughed at because she asked too many questions.
D. She was younger than her classmates, so she had to work much harder than them.
12. What is the main message of this passage?
A. Hard work is the only thing that matters for success.
B. A successful person never changes their mind or direction.
C. People may have doubts, take different paths, and still achieve great things in the end.
D. Teachers and parents are the most important people in a student’s life.

“We have Dante (但丁), Shakespeare (莎士比亚) and Du Fu (712-770). These poets create the values of judging poems,” said Harvard professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary (纪录片).
Despite the fact that Du Fu is usually described as Dante and Shakespeare, he has remained largely unknown in the Western world for long. However, with the screening of the first English-language documentary presenting the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary (文学的) secret seem to an end.
It is written and presented by Michael Wood, a skilled television historian who also directed other China-related documentaries such as The Story of China and The Story of China’s Reform and Opening-Up (2018).
From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and the Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians, who helped to tell the fantastic story of the poet. Interviews with famous scholars (学者) focusing on Chinese literature also helped present a clearer picture of the poet’s life experiences, literary achievements and his friendship with Li Bai, another great Chinese poet.
Du Fu lived in the Tang Dynasty, a time marked by rich cultural achievements. However, after a terrible war, he lost his government job and lived a poor life. But the poet never stopped writing, In his poems, he cared for his country and common people, and enjoyed the simple joys of life.
“Du’s poetry reflects the country’s historical events and his own feelings, so he becomes a part of Chinese culture,” said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 finished the eight-year-long project to translate Du Fu’s 1,400 poems into English.

Dear daughters,
Most parents tell their children,”You can be anything you want when you grow up.” I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that success itself comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing.
Girls, here are some words of wisdom (智慧) as you make your way in the world, from your mom.
Be open-minded to changing your path (even several times) along the way.
In high school, I wanted to be an official. I left my hometown and went to college in Washington, D.C. There, I discovered that I was creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national organization. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to starting a business. Now I run a successful company that I set up all by myself.
Work out what you are good at and what you are interested in. Keep an open mind and change what you are doing based on what you are learning about yourself.
Failure is crucial (至关重要的) to your success.
I won’t tell you to feel good about failure. Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has completely made me better.
Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing(尴尬的). I finally passed it, and I’ve never failed an exam again. What I have learned from that experience is to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time.
I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and a company owner. I hope I can help you to believe that you can be anything you want and you can have everything on your list. I will be very glad to watch your lives develop before my eyes.

Your mom
