Do you know you can multiply (乘) two numbers by drawing just a few lines? Line multiplication was invented many centuries ago. This maths game might help you when you don’t have a calculator (计算器).
Work out the place values (位值) of your numbers. For example, you are calculating 34×12. The first number has a 4 in the ones place and a 3 in the tens place. Your second number has a 2 in the ones place and a 1 in the tens place.
Draw parallel lines to represent (代表) the first number. Draw three lines to represent the tens place. Draw four lines to represent the ones place.
Draw parallel lines to represent the second number. Draw one line to represent the tens place. The line should cross over the lines from the first number. Then, draw two lines below it to represent the ones place.
Draw dots (点) at each point where the lines meet each other.
Circle the dots representing the ones place and add them up. Here, you would count eight dots. So the ones place of your answer will be 8.
Circle the dots representing the tens place and add them up.
You would count 10 dots here. Like any time you add or multiply, once a digit (数位) reaches 10, you need to carry (进位) over to the next place. In this example, you would put a 0 in the tens place and carry the 1 over to the hundreds place.
Count the dots representing the hundreds place. You would count three dots here. Don’t forget the 1 you’ve carried over. Calculate 3 + 1, and the hundreds place of your answer is 4.
Write down your answer. For34 × 12, the answer is 408.

In a society crazy about outer beauty, Peking Opera offers an opposite standard: true beauty lies not in smooth looks, but in inner virtues (德行). As a fine traditional Chinese stage art form, Peking Opera’s facial makeup, or lianpu, is far more than just stage paint. It is a special visual system that shows a character’s personality and inner spirit at a single look.
For young performer Wang Yue, this art has been her lifelong goal. Trained from childhood, she has learned that every stroke (一笔;一画) and color of lianpu follows strict traditional rules. Unlike modern standards favoring uniform standards of beauty, lianpu uses bright decorated colors to tell right from wrong. Traditionally, three main colors form its meaningful system. Red represents faith and courage for or brave honest old leaders; Black means fairness for just judges; White stands for cheating and tricks for negative roles.
Wang once joined a global cultural exchange program to show Peking Opera abroad. Before the tour, she feared foreign audiences might only admire the bright, eye-catching colors and ignore the deep cultural messages behind the painted faces. To prevent such shallow (肤浅的) and one-sided views. she redesigned her performance. Besides classic acts, she added communicative explanations, explaining the hidden meanings of different colors for local audiences.
Thanks to her efforts, the cultural exchange activity achieved great success. Foreign viewers gradually gave up their misunderstanding of Peking Opera’s colorful stage makeup. They realized that the charm of Peking Opera lies in inner goodness rather than outer physical beauty. Many foreign artists even started learning basic face-painting skills to dig deeper into this art. When interviewed after the show, Wang Yue shared, “Bright colors are only the shell of lianpu. The kindness, faith and fairness hidden behind them belong to all humans and the beauty of the spirit can travel freely across every country.”

B. A dishonest official with bad intentions.
C. An honest judge who treats people fairly.
D. An ordinary person with a mild personality.
31. Why did Wang Yue add interactive explanations to her overseas shows?
A. To show off her professional face-painting skills.
B. To spread lianpu’s culture to more young foreigners.
C. To help foreign audiences grasp lianpu’s hidden meanings.
D. To make her classic opera acts more lively and eye-catching.
32. What messages do Wang Yue’s words suggest?
A. Art knows no boundaries.
B. Art is a mirror of real life.
C. Fine feathers make fine birds.
D. Deeds are better than words.

A face-to-face meeting with Emperor Qinshihuang, once only a thought, is now within reach. In Central China’s Hunan Province, AI is making this kind of “meeting” possible — it’s making old things, places and even people from Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) come alive. This fun project is from teamwork between a Changsha company and archaeologists (考古学家).
The team uses AI to collect information from old papers and things dug up. Also, they put them in order. The company’s manager, Zhang Gangyi, showed how useful the technology is. He made a picture of Hua, an officer from the Qin Dynasty. Hua’s story and many facts of life in Qin times were written on about 38,000 bamboo slips (竹简). People found these slips in 2002. They are very useful — they filled an empty part in history and told us 15-year life in an old Qin town.
Now, the AI-made Hua is a guide at Liye Ancient Town Archaeological Site Park. The park opened again in October after being fixed. It has a new smart guiding system made by Zhang’s team. They turned the old words on the bamboo slips into fun videos. Visitors can scan QR codes (二维码) at the park to watch these videos. Then they can feel what life was like 2,000 years ago.
All pictures, clothes and things in the videos are based on real historical finds. For example, Hua’s clothes got ideas from Emperor Qinshihuang’s tomb in Shaanxi. The team had to read many reports to get small facts right. This was a big challenge for them.
Zhang loves Chinese history very much. He said technology helps people learn about the past better. “History is not just in museum boxes-people can feel it and talk with it,” he said. He thinks “culture + technology” will make traditional culture easier for everyone to enjoy. For example, visitors could wear VR (虚拟现实) glasses to see Qin Dynasty buildings on screen. He also said our own technology is important. We can’t use foreign technologies for our cultural projects.
33. What makes the “face-to-face meeting with Emperor Qinshihuang” possible?
A. The old papers and things dug up.
B. AI technology used in the project.
C. The hard work of archaeologists alone.
D. Bamboo slips found in Henan Province.
34. How can visitors experience Qin life at the park?
A. By scanning QR codes to watch videos.
B. By talking with archaeologists in person.
C. By reading ancient bamboo slips directly.
D. By wearing beautiful Qin Dynasty clothes.
35. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The bamboo slips found in 2002 told us everything about Qin life.
B. The facts showed in the videos come from real historical discoveries.
C. The AI-made Hua has become a popular guide in many ancient parks.
D. Zhang Gangyi thinks foreign technology is helpful for cultural projects.
36. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. AI and Qin History: Making the Past Come Alive.
B. AI and VR Glasses: Seeing Qin Dynasty Buildings.
C. AI and Smart Park: Experiencing Qin Dynasty Life.
D. AI and Bamboo Slips: Telling Qin Dynasty History.
