You be the judge: should my phone-addicted friend go on a mobile detox (戒断)?
The prosecution (控方): James
My housemate and best friend spends every waking minute on TikTok. I know she works in social media, but she’s now seriously addicted to it, even after she’s clocked off. Besides, she needs to stop playing videos loudly around the house when I’m watching TV.
The defense: Marley
My job means I have to be on the ball with what’s trending online. I think James is jealous because he’s got a rather boring job in accounting. I don’t go around playing videos at full volume all the time; I think that’s only happened a handful of times. He’s exaggerating there.
The jury (陪审团) of Guardian readers
While Marley’s use of TikTok may seem excessive to some, ultimately it is up to her how she chooses to use her time. If James can’t accept that, he should move out.
Margo, 29
Marley needs to put her phone down, live in the moment and think less about her social media presence. She is guilty of not valuing an honest friend because she thinks a better life awaits her on TikTok.
Stewart, 35
As a fellow phone addict, I do have sympathy for Marley. However, it’s more than a little rude to have the sound turned on while watching TV together.
Peter, 40
The excessive use of social media is a crime and reflects poor control over social habits. Marley needs to be more considerate of others.
Steve, 64
Now you be the judge
In our reader feedback section, tell us: should Marley get off TikTok and get a life?
21. What is Marley’s reason for spending time on TikTok?
A. She finds an accounting job dull.
B. She enjoys sharing popular videos.
C. She needs to stay updated on online trends.
D. She prefers avoiding interaction with James.
22. Who is fully on Marley’s side?
A. Margo. B. Stewart. C. Peter. D. Steve.
23. Where does the text most probably come from?
A. A legal paper. B. A court record. C. A lifestyle survey. D. An interactive column.

Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson was thrilled and surprised.
When he came to New York to study photography five years ago, he found a rich collection of images of life in Africa, past and present, in the city’s libraries, galleries and museums. Here he was thousands of miles from Ghana surrounded by more visual history of Africa than he had ever seen back home.
That led to an idea: create a library of photobooks in Ghana, which allows people to learn about their own history and gives them the tools to tell new stories of the continent.
This idea has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Dikan means “take the lead” in the Akan language.
To create the center, Ninson travelled around New York City for books to ship to Ghana. He searched secondhand stores on the Lower East Side, engaged in online bidding wars and reached out to publishers and galleries, some of whom donated hundreds of materials. He maxed out his credit cards and lined his apartment walls with books, using Uber and U-Haul trucks to transport the books to storage units he rented across the city.
He managed to gather more than 30,000 volumes — mainly about photography filmmaking, but also issues of publications like National Geographic dating back to the early 1940s. Ninson had additional support from his friend and collaborator, Brandon Stanton, who started a GoFundMe that raised over $1.2 million for the founding of Dikan.
In December 2022, the Dikan Center was opened. In a former residence that was restored to house the center, anyone is welcome to sit with the African story as long as they’d like.
Michael Itkoff, a supporter of Ninson and the Dikan Center from the start, says photobooks offer a different visual experience in today’s world, which is often focused on the volume and speed of images available online. “The photobook allows for an intimate and more slowed down — and I would say elegant experience of visuals,” says Itkoff.
24. What is Ninson’s purpose of creating the Dikan Center?
A. To bring the African story home.
B. To change people’s attitude to Africa.
C. To pursue his passion for photography.
D. To create a sharing space for book-lovers.
25. What does paragraph 5 mainly focus on?
A. Ninson’s good taste in books.
B. The assistance Ninson has received.
C. Efforts made in creating Dikan Center.
D. Wide sources of books in Dikan Center.
26. How would Itkoff describe the experience of reading photobooks?
A. An ideal tool for art education.
B. An escape from a fast-paced life.
C. A dive into the richness of stories.
D. A beautiful encounter with visuals.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. The realization of a big dream. B. The influence of a social trend.
C. The development of photobooks. D The growth of a genius photographer.

On a warm and damp June morning, Emily Bick winds through a field of knee-high corn. It feels like that quiet, expectation-filled moment before a concert: Tech people are setting up microphones, connecting wires. The star of this particular show is the microphone itself. Research assistants are attaching it to the corn stalks (茎), an innovation that Bick named the Insect Eavesdropper (窃听器).
Bick, an insect scientist, researches ways to better detect the agricultural pests (害虫) that drive serious economic losses worldwide. She says improving these methods could result in using pesticides more strategically — less often, at just the right time. Corn rootworm, also known as the “billion-dollar bug,” feeds on corn roots, limiting the plant’s nutrient supply and making stalks fall over. As a result, 20% of the crop is lost to the insect every year. Worse still, climate change is bringing new challenges, such as the multiplication of insects in warmer temperatures. In our global society, experts say rapid pest detection will be critical to food production.
Bick’s solution to the problem of pest detection is sound: Eavesdropping on the unique vibrations (震动) that an insect makes when chewing on a plant to identify the insect itself. The Insect Eavesdropper uses a contact microphone, an affordable device that musicians often use on instruments. A little disc sits on a solid object — like corn — and captures the vibrations moving through it, registering each one with an electrical signal. “When corn rootworm feeds on the roots, the vibration translates from the root system to the stalk,” Bick says. “That’s where we’re picking it up. We’re using the plant as the musical instrument, as essentially the outside of a guitar.”
Bick and her colleagues’ findings aren’t published yet, but as of now, their detection method is anywhere from 80% to 96% accurate. The team are still working on the data-processing pipeline, but hope they can get the Insect Eavesdropper on the shelf in a couple of years. Their goal is to advance pest detection — and maybe inspire people to listen to everything a little closer.
28. What is Bick’s purpose in working in the corn field?
A. To prepare for a concert. B. To arrange for a study.
C. To make the show special. D. To innovate planting ways.
29. Why is corn rootworm named “billion-dollar bug”?
A. Its nutrient is rich. B. It causes great loss.
C. Its number is limited. D. It brings huge profits.
30. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The corn. B. The signal. C. The system. D. The vibration.
31. Which of the following words can best describe the Insect Eavesdropper?
A. Perfect. B. Inspiring. C. Promising. D. Purchasable.
D
When it’s time for a wardrobe makeover (形象改造), who’s the best person to give you some advice? You’ll probably turn to your friend for some feedback and fashion tips — they know you best and can offer an honest opinion about which colours don’t match and which outfit makes you look pretty.
However, for someone like me, who’s not a follower of fashion and has a more practical dress sense, I don’t need help — it’s just jeans or… jeans! But for people who care about their appearance, they can now get some trustworthy advice with the aid of technology.
Of course, using social media is a good way when you are at a loss about fashion, but this sometimes brings in too much conflicting advice and opinions that are sometimes straightforward! That’s why one woman has developed an app to help women crowdsource advice from stylists in a safe, non-violent communication environment.
Sophia Matveeva’s Style Counsel app allows users to post a photo and receive “yes” or “no” answers from other users, or more detailed advice from fashion stylists and bloggers very quickly. According to Mathew Wall, BBC Technology of Business editor, this is a growing business, with several new apps such as AskAnna, Mallzee and StyleDotMe all offering young women tips on suitable and fashionable clothes to wear.
There’s also a website called EyeFitU which finds clothes to fit your figure. Its chief executive, Isabelle Ohnemus says there are no international standards in clothes sizes but she explains, “We can set up your size profile in a few seconds with 80% accuracy just knowing your gender, height, weight and age”. This information is used to find clothes that suit your actual shape. And the internet giant, Amazon, has also developed a camera that links to a “style check” function that compares photos and gives its opinion of which outfit is better, based on fit, colour, style and current fashion trends.
But does technology make fashion advice a bit impersonal? Sophia Matveeva admits that women in particular are social creatures and that “AI will never stop us talking to each other… girls will always want the approval of the cool girl at school.” But as for me: an app with someone I don’t know could be the place to start with some careful-in-speech fashion tips!
32. What is the problem of asking for fashion advice on social media?
A. No feedback. B. Dishonest opinions. C. Too many choices. D. Contradictory advice.
33. Who are the possible target users of the fashion apps?
A. Cool boys at school. B. Young women fashion-goers.
C. Fashion stylists and bloggers. D. People with a practical dress sense.
34. How does the website EyeFitU help users find suitable clothes?
A. By developing a super camera.
B. By assessing current fashion trends.
C. By analysing users’ basic information.
D. By setting agreed standards for clothes sizes.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Fashion Anxiety B. New Fashion Trends
C. Wardrobe Decoration D. Tech-driven Fashion Advice

For educators at any stage of their career, preparing for parent-teacher conferences often brings a certain level of anticipation. Over the years, I’ve come up with a few essential approaches that have made these meetings far more effective and meaningful. 36 Surprisingly, they guarantee your conference a success.
My most important step begins early in the semester, well before conference schedules are finalized: I focus on building a genuine, positive relationship with each student’s family. 37 When caregivers already see you as a reliable partner by the time you meet, the conversation flows more openly and constructively.
Another practice I rely on is maintaining clear and consistent communication throughout the term. Regular updates — whether through a brief class newsletter or a digital platform — keep families informed about what’s happening in the classroom. 38 Thus, it helps build a strong bridge between home and school.
39 Beyond the traditional in-person meeting, I also provide phone or video call alternatives, which helps me include caregivers who might otherwise be unable to attend the conference in the flesh due to work schedules, transportation, or family responsibilities.
Finally, I view conferences as a collaborative (合作的) exchange. Conferences are an active conversation among all stakeholders: students, caregivers, and teachers. So, it’s a time for me to share data, observations, celebrations, and goals with caregivers. 40 I also actively encourage input from both the student and their family. This three-way dialogue helps ensure everyone is committed to the next steps.
A. But that’s not all!
B. They sound straightforward.
C. The possibilities are endless.
D. Financing all the families is the top priority.
E. It is key to building trust for the entire school year.
F. I’ve also found it helpful to offer conference options.
G. This allows parents to feel connected to their child’s day-to-day learning.

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things without being planned was never my strength. As a 44-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen, upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” “she would call from downstairs.” “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks — the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles — to remove me from my studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along, friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No,” I would almost always say. “I have too much to do.”
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

应用文:One possible version
Good morning, everyone! I’d like to share my thoughts on challenges. In my view, challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth.
Earlier this semester, I was struggling with math. The concepts seemed impossible to grasp, and my grades were declining. Instead of giving up, I spent extra time practicing, turned to teachers and classmates for help, and studied diligently every day. Gradually, I improved and even scored well in a recent test. This experience taught me that perseverance and support are key to overcoming challenges.
My dear classmates, please embrace challenges with a positive mindset. Believe in yourself and seek help when needed. Remember, every challenge, no matter how discouraging, is a chance for us to become better. Thank you!
续写:One possible version
Finally, I gave in. I picked up the recipe that I had copied down from a friend. “Prepare a little bit of water with garlic and onions. Add …,” it read. I searched for 20 minutes in the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a huge white china pot. I washed the tomatoes, cutting away sections that were spoiled, and sliced and threw them into the pot. I swayed the watery mixture as if I were washing gold. Meanwhile, turning on the stereo, I sang along with Billy Joel and reviewed a step I’d picked up in my swing-dance class.
A month later, my parents came back. They found a daughter who had discovered the beauty of flexibility. I shared stories of my tomato adventures, and we laughed together. My mom, the same woman who used to try and lure me away from my books, now shared in my newfound passion for the kitchen. As I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by the rich flavour of tomato sauce, I realized the importance of allowing life to surprise us. Those tomatoes had taught me a valuable lesson: balance in life is not just about sticking to schedules and plans; it’s also about embracing the unexpected, reminding me that there’s a world of joy beyond the limitations of a strict schedule.

M: Hi, do you need any help?
W: Well, I’m quite lost. I left my hotel trying to get to the Ladies Street Market in Kowloon. A man told me to take the red line, but I saw no Kowloon station at all.
(Text 2)
W: If you’re writing poems, you should study great writers in history like Li Bai and Du Fu.
M: I’m only writing these poems and stories for fun. But I’d love to learn more about my new hobby! If possible, I’d like to publish a collection of my poems.
(Text 3)
M: I’d like to sign up for weekly volunteer work. I hear it’s a great extracurricular activity to connect with the community.
W: It sure is, but obviously you’ll have to put in a lot of hours, so you must leave some room in scheduling your study time.
(Text 4)
M: I don’t get it. You’re always reading travel books, yet you never actually go anywhere.
W: Well, I can’t afford it right now. Not everybody is the son of a banker, you know. But when I finish studying and have a doctor’s salary, I’ll travel the world, you’ll see.
(Text 5)
W: Are you joining us for the lakeside camping this Sunday, Andrew?
M: Oh Cathy, I’m tied up with work. I’ll have to be stuck with writing a report this weekend.
W: Poor you. Don’t stress too much!

W: Well, sir. Will you be checking any bags?
M: I just have carry-on luggage and my computer.
W: All right. Here is your boarding pass. The flight will begin boarding at 7:00 at Gate 3. Enjoy your trip.
M: I’m sure I will. Traveling business class is always a pleasure, especially on an overnight flight like this. I can’t wait for it! Actually, there’s one more thing — can I still change my seat assignment if I want to? I picked a window seat when checking in, but I’m wondering if an aisle seat is still available.
W: Let me check… yes, we do have one aisle seat open in the front section of business class. Would you like me to switch it for you now?
M: Yes, please switch me to that one. That’s perfect! I really appreciate all your help.
W: You’re very welcome. The seat is updated now. Have a wonderful flight, and enjoy your journey!
听下面一段对话,回答第8至第10三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

M: Hello, Miss. This is my first visit here. I’d like to make an appointment with Dr. Clare.
W: Could I have your name please?
M: Randolph Philips.
W: Got it. How about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, the day after tomorrow, or 1:30 p.m. Thursday?
M: The latter is better. I have to send my kids to kindergarten every morning, to take some pressure off my wife.
W: All right. And what seems to be the problem?
M: To tell the truth, I fell off a ladder yesterday while painting my house and sprained my ankle. It hurt a little at first, so I didn’t care much. But I found it was swollen a lot this morning.
W: I see. May I have your phone number?
M: Sure. It’s 635-0973.
听下面一段对话,回答第11至第13三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
(Text 8)
M: It’s already 6:00 p.m. Let’s call it a day. Your place is on my way home. Do you need a lift?
W: Thanks, but I need to go to night school.
M: Go to night school after a full day’s work? What made you decide to do that?
W: Well, night school is a great place to learn new skills. One of my friends takes classes to keep up with the latest job skills. As for me, learning something is definitely better than wasting time watching short videos at home. Before going to night school, I always felt that my life was boring and empty.
M: I see. What class are you taking?
W: I’m taking a baking class right now. There are a lot of options, like traditional Chinese painting and advertising photography. And I might take a foreign language class after I finish this.

W: Hello, I saw a poster about free things to do in the area, and I’d like some ideas for things to do on the 29th.
M: OK. Then let’s start with an event specially designed for children to entertain themselves. The art gallery is holding an event called “Family Welcome” that day.
W: What time does it start?
M: The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the event runs from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. They’re going to show a short film. Last time they ran the event and there was a film about painting. They’re now working on one about contemporary sculpture.
W: I like the sound of that. And what else?
M: Well, if you all enjoy listening to music, there are several free concerts. They range from folk music to Latin American.
W: The Latin American could be fun. What time is that?
M: They’re performing in the central library at 1 o’clock, then at 4 it’s in the City Museum, and in the evening, at 7:30, there’s a longer concert in the theater.
W: Thank you.

(Text 10)
Good morning and welcome to the museum, one with a remarkable range of exhibits. My name is Greg, and I’ll tell you about the various collections as we go around. But before we go, let me just give you a taste of what we have here. Well, for one thing, we have a fine collection of 20th and 21st century paintings, many by very well-known artists. Then there are the 19th century paintings. The museum was opened in the middle of that century, and several of the artists each donated one work to get the museum started, as it were. So they’re of special interest to us. We feel closer to them than to other works. All our glass was left to the museum by its founder when he died in 1878. And in the terms of his will, we’re not allowed to add anything to that collection. He believed it was perfect in itself, and we don’t see any reason to disagree. Okay, that was something about the collections, and now here’s some more practical information in case you need it. Most of the museum facilities are downstairs, so you go down the stairs here.
