Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List to Visit
Sligo Passage Tombs, Ireland
Located 125 miles northwest of Dublin, Sligo offers beautiful landscapes and Ireland’s largest cluster of prehistorie tombs, with guided tours available. Over 100 stone burial chambers, some 5,000 years old, are scattered across the hills, with underground passages once believed to lead to a mythical underworld. The most dramatic is Queen Maeve’s tomb atop Knocknarea Mountain. Both Keshcorran and Carrowkeel are free to visit — just a 10- to 20-minute walk from parking lots.
Cape York Peninsula, Australia
Covering over 45,000 square miles of rainforest and wetlands, Australia’s northernmost region features 20,000-year-old rock art created by Indigenous Australians, one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations. The peninsula is home to only 17,000 people — more than half of whom are Indigenous. It begins about 100 miles north of Cairns, where visitors can rent a car or fly to small communities.
Real Felipe Fortress, Peru
Ten miles west of Lima, this seaside fortress was rebuilt after the 1746 earthquake as a five-sided fort with a moat and a mile-long stone wall. Tourists can explore its 24-acre grounds and two military museums, and enjoy views of the sea where Spanish ships once retreated. The fortress witnessed Peru’s final victory over Spain in 1826 and is open daily.
Gcwihaba Caves, Botswana
Burrowed into the Aha Hills near the Namibian border, these six cave systems contain fossils and rock formations over two million years old — possibly the richest in southern Africa. A 630-mile drive from Gaborone requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Inside, bats fill dark chambers; outside, visitors may spot rare trees and geckos. The caves are best visited in the dry season.
21. Which site can visitors tour with a guide?
A. Sligo Passage Tombs. B. Cape York Peninsula.
C. Real Felipe Fortress. D. Gcwihaba Caves.
22. What do we know about Cape York Peninsula?
A. It is heavily populated. B. It is known for ancient rock art.
C. It is located south of Cairns. D. It has underground passages.
23. What is special about visiting the Gcwihaba Caves?
A. Free entry is offered. B. A short walk is needed.
C. A sea view is provided. D. A visit in the dry season is recommended.

Steve Clark, 45, a musician from Surrey, battled a fear of swimming for most of his life. As a child, he never took to the water. “It always bothered me. I used to look at people swimming on holiday, and think that I was missing out on the enjoyment of it,” he says.
One bad experience when he was on a business trip in his twenties set Clark back even further. He decided to take a dip in a hotel pool, thinking that it wouldn’t be that difficult. This led to a panic (恐慌) moment after he lost his footing in the deep end of the pool. “I was extremely scared that I couldn’t swim,” he says.
But in 2014 Clark decided to take the plunge — after all, he was “running out of excuses” not to. Helped by the gentle encouragement of his partner, he completed 10 beginners’ lessons. “It was difficult to start with. My main fear was putting my head under the water, but the instructors taught me a technique to help. Once I learnt how to do it, it got me over the fear,” he says. The swimming lessons allowed him to participate in something that always felt impossible.
Clark’s story shows that midlife (中年) is as good a time as any to learn. A study in 2018 by Columbia University found that healthy older men and women can generate just as many new brain cells as younger people.
“We used to think of getting older as a loss: a time when we lose skills and lose our looks. But so much research has shown that losing your abilities is not unavoidable,” says Linda Blair, a psychologist. She explains that learning skills can help to keep our brains young. “The brain is like a muscle, so when you learn something new, you’re exercising it and getting better blood flow to the brain. You’re also reestablishing connections; you don’t have to lose a skill forever, you can regain it.”
24. What initially bothered Clark according to the passage?
A. His panic in a hotel pool. B. His lack of encouragement.
C. His failure in a business trip. D. His inability to enjoy swimming.
25. What does the underlined phrase “take the plunge” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Accept the fact. B. Have a try. C. Avoid the risk. D. Realize his dream.
26. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Being old does not necessarily mean losing skills.
B. People can easily learn new skills at any stage of life.
C. Building up muscles can help blood flow into the brain.
D. Seniors can produce as many new brain cells as youths.
27. What does Clark’s experience show?
A. No pains, no gains. B. Every dog has its day.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. It’s never too old to learn.

Dreams seem to occur at random, from everyday situations to unpredictable experiences. Now, a new study shows that our personal features as well as real-life events actually shape what we dream about, creating patterns in our subconsciousness (潜意识).
The study, published in Communications Psychology, analyzed thousands of dreams and waking experience reports collected over four years. The researchers used natural language processing tools to quantify the structure of dreams. They found that personal features like how often someone daydreams, their attitudes about dreams, and their sleep quality all influence dream content.
Researchers noticed that dreams don’t simply replay scenes from our daily lives. Instead, dreams seem to mix familiar places like workplaces, hospitals, and schools into new scenes that combine memories with imagination. The reported dreams tended to focus more on visual details, feature more characters, and make less logical sense. They were also less self-focused and less driven by conscious thinking.
These dream transformations weren’t the same for everyone. Participants who spent more time daydreaming during the day tended to have dreams that jumped rapidly from one scene to another. Those who placed more importance on dreams described them as more vivid and immersive. Sleep quality also played a role.
The team used three large language models, LLaMA 3, ChatGPT-4, and ChatGPT-4 Turbo, to evaluate dream reports on 16 different aspects, such as mood, strangeness and freedom of movement. “By combining large-scale data with computational methods, we were able to discover patterns in dream contents that were previously difficult to find,” Elce said. “This opens new possibilities for studying consciousness, memory, and mental health in a better way.”
28. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. Data analysis. B. Sleep observation. C. Personal interview. D. Life event tracking.
29. Which of the following best describes the nature of the dream?
A. Creative. B. Predictable. C. Realistic. D. Repetitive.
30. What is the main advantage of the language models?
A. Increasing the number of dream features. B. Improving the accuracy of human brains.
C. Simplifying more personal dream reports. D. Identifying the patterns of various dreams.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. To Control Dreams, Control Your Day. B. Better Sleep Creates Better Dreaming.
C. AI Now Fully Understands Our dreams. D. Dreams Are the Mind’s Hidden Patterns.
D
Chinese brands are rapidly expanding globally, from Pop Mart’s (泡泡马特) cute collectibles to TikTok’s viral influence and Luckin Coffee’s budget-friendly drinks. As China moves up the value chain, its soft power grows, though sustainability challenges remain. The long-standing narrative of “made in China, designed elsewhere” is undergoing a profound change.
Pop Mart, which started with a single Beijing store a decade ago, now operates outlets across the US. Since 2024, its annual income has more than tripled, with overall sales surging 250%. As a flagship cultural export, TikTok ranks among America’s top five social media platforms, boasting over 170 million monthly active users and exposing young Americans to Chinese pop culture, traditional craftsmanship and daily life through short videos. Luckin Coffee, China’s largest coffee chain, outperformed Starbucks in sales income and is now expanding in the US by adapting its menu to local tastes and focusing on high-foot-traffic urban areas.
These brands’ global successes are often supported by government initiatives, as China aims to expand its international influence through enterprises blending innovation and cultural connotations (内涵).
However, significant challenges persist. TikTok has faced intense reviews over data privacy in Western countries, while Pop Mart confronts pressures over packaging waste. For some Chinese ecommerce platforms, user retention rates (用户留存率) remain lower than Amazon’s 93% in the US, as they struggle to compete with local rivals’ personalized services.
Despite these obstacles, Chinese brands have firmly established their global presence. As a natural outcome of China’s economic upgrading, their international expansion integrates more Chinese products and services into global daily life — fostering the nation’s soft power and reshaping “Chinese brands” as innovative, trustworthy and culturally resonant.
32. What can we learn about Pop Mart, TikTok and Luckin Coffee from Paragraph 2?
A. All of them started their business in Beijing ten years ago.
B. Luckin Coffee’s sales income was higher than Starbucks’.
C. TikTok has more than 170 million daily active users in America.
D. Pop Mart’s annual income stayed the same after 2024.
33. What is one of the challenges Chinese global brands are facing?
A. Pop Mart gets complaints about packaging waste.
B. TikTok loses most users because of poor short videos.
C. Luckin Coffee fails to change its menu for local people.
D. Chinese e-commerce platforms beat Amazon in user retention.
34. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The old idea “made in China, designed elsewhere” will never change.
B. Government projects help some Chinese brands go global.
C. Chinese brands’ success mainly depends on cheap products.
D. Chinese soft power stops growing because of difficulties.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The development of social media platform TikTok in America.
B. The reasons why Chinese coffee chains beat foreign brands.
C. Chinese brands expand worldwide with achievements and challenges.
D. The big problems of Chinese brands’ overseas marketing.

How to Overcome Depression
Depression is a weakening condition that can make it impossible for you to enjoy your daily life. It will make you feel sad from time to time. To overcome depression, you first need to find out whether your feelings are signs of depression. 36 While medications can help relieve these symptoms, it is still necessary for depressed people to understand the disorder and develop healthier strategies for coping with it.
Keep yourself busy. Fill your schedule with events and activities you love. Keeping a packed schedule will force you to stay active, focused, and thinking about the next thing on your list. You can draw up a schedule for each day at the start of the week, or simply plan out each day the night before. 37
Optimize your eating pattern. 38 Even if you’re losing your appetite, you should be resolved to eat three meals daily. You don’t need to try to lose weight or be incredibly health conscious when you’re dealing with your depression, but eating wholesome food regularly will improve your mental and physical state.
Being a more optimistic individual will enable you to view your life and the world in a way that fills you with hope rather than despair, so try to cultivate a positive mindset. To think more positively, you should learn how to identify your negative thoughts and combat them with solid positive ones whenever possible. For a jump-start, list at least five things to be thankful for. 39
40 Neglecting personal hygiene (卫生) is a typical side effect of depression. While you will not defeat your depression merely by transforming your looks, taking time daily to keep up your external image and personal cleanliness will gradually boost your self-esteem. Form good daily habits of bathing, dental protection and hair maintenance.
A. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
B. Then keep this habit of thankfulness going every day.
C. A regular daily routine works wonders for your mental health.
D. Whichever way you choose, stick to it.
E. How you look on the outside affects how you feel on the inside.
F. Maintaining consistent meals helps regulate mood and energy.
G. For example, if you are feeling blue, lonely, or worthless, you may be suffering from depression.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I must admit, I haven’t always been a lover of animals. As a high school student, I once held a deep distrust of animals, because of several terrifying encounters in my childhood. Once I was bitten by a rabbit, and another time a big dog charged me while I rode my bike to school. On a sweltering summer day, a stray dog (流浪狗) even chased my school cross-country training team when we were doing outdoor practice. All those negative experiences carved a fixed belief into my mind: all creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.
As I grew older and entered senior high school, I lived in the city with my family. Surprisingly, almost every friend I made raised pets, and I even got bitten by a pet bird by accident once. It felt like fate would never let me live peacefully alongside any animal. Then I met my best friend Lisa. We were close classmates, and after she moved to a new community near my home, I often went to her house, where I shared space with her lovely dog Bailey. Gradually, I began to accept the idea of getting along with this little creature.
Even so, my prejudice (偏见) against animals never faded completely. I still kept away from Bailey and believed that all animals were unpredictable and dangerous. I often told Lisa that animals might hurt people suddenly, which sparked fierce arguments between us. No matter how gentle Bailey was, I refused to trust it fully.
One evening, I went to Lisa’s backyard to wait for her. I was walking carelessly in the grass when my worst nightmare (噩梦) nearly came true. A poisonous snake crept out of the bushes and stared at me, ready to attack. Frozen with fear, I dared not move an inch. Just at that moment, Bailey rushed over instantly. It stood firmly in front of me, barking loudly to scare the snake away. It bravely drove the dangerous snake out of the yard. Witnessing this scene, I was speechless and moved to tears.

My Favorite Singer
Among all singers, I admire Jay Chou most. He is a famous Chinese singer, songwriter and actor, born in Taiwan. He is widely known for his unique musical style mixing Chinese traditional music and modern pop music.
I like him mainly for two reasons. First, his songs are warm and inspiring, which always cheer me up when I feel upset. Second, he sticks to his dreams and keeps working hard, setting a good example for young people. Besides, he always tries to spread traditional Chinese culture through his works.
In short, Jay Chou is not only a great singer but also my role model.
【读后续写参考范文】
I knelt down and gently stroked Bailey’s head. A mix of guilt and gratitude flooded my heart. All my long-held prejudice against animals vanished the moment I witnessed its bravery. For so long, I had blindly judged animals as dangerous, ignoring Bailey’s constant gentleness and tolerance toward me. It was exactly this loyal dog that risked itself to save me from the poisonous snake. Ashamed of my narrow-minded bias, I whispered softly to it, sincere regret filling my mind.
From that day on, Bailey became my trusted family member. I began to actively approach and care for it every time I visited Lisa. I played with it and learned to treat little creatures with kindness and patience. Bailey’s bravery and warmth completely changed my old views. I finally realized that animals are never our enemies. Instead, they are loyal friends, and true harmony between humans and animals comes from trust and understanding.

W: I love your orange scarf. It’s lovely and it goes so well with your blue jacket.
M: Thanks! I always think orange and blue look nice together.
W: I agree. I also like wearing blue with other cool colors, such as green and purple.
Text2
M: How can I become Head Boy of the school?
W: To begin with, you need to send a letter to the headmaster, putting yourself forward. He’ll then interview everyone and select the three best ones. After that, the students will choose the right person in mind.
Text3
W: I visited the Uyuni Salt Flats on my recent trip to Bolivia. It was so cool!
M: Yeah. I’ve seen them on TV. Is it very hot there?
W: Not really. But the area hardly gets any rain at all.
Text4
W: I need a new chair. But they’re all so expensive. I can’t afford them.
M:I saw an advertisement (广告) for a cheap chair. Maybe you can have a look. Here let me find it on my computer.
W: That’s great!
Text5
M: My favorite way to relax is to put some nice music on the kitchen radio and spend a few hours preparing a delicious meal for my family.
W: That sounds lovely.
M: It is! So long as someone else cleans up afterwards!
Text6
W: We’ll feel so much better once we get rid of all this stuff.
M: Agreed! Let’s organize everything into three groups. Rubbish goes into the black bag. Put things to sell in the blue case. Then the brown box is for donations.
W: Great.
M: We’ve kept so many unnecessary things. Like this textbook, for example. I left college when I was 21 and it was 18 years ago.
W: Well, you can’t sell or donate that. It’s years out of date!
M: Into the rubbish it goes!
Text 7
W: Here’s your coffee. Nice and milky, just as you like it. I also bought you something extra.
M: A chocolate cake? I didn’t ask for this.
W: I know, but I wanted to celebrate your new job, and the cakes are delicious here.
M: Well... Thanks!
W: You’re welcome! So, how is it going?
M: Really well!
W: You’re mostly working from home, right?
M: Yeah. I have to catch the train to the London or Manchester offices a couple of days a month. But most of the time I’ll be right here in Birmingham!
Text 8
W: Can I use the computer? I need to email my professor.
M: Sure. I’ve completed my homework. Just let me finish reading this article. It’s about a sea animal, the green turtles (海龟).
W: What does it say?
M: It says they are in danger because of the global warming. The rising sea levels may make them have nowhere to lay their eggs.
W: Really? Does it mean that we may not see them someday?
M: Probably.
W: Well, we should do something then!
M: Yes! I first knew them through the TV show Planet Earth. Now, I want to give a speech in my science class to let people know we should protect our environment for both humans and animals.
Text 9
M: Does the invention of AI software worry you?
W: Not really. I’ve seen some of the writings ChatGPT produces!
M: How are they going?
W: Well, they usually make sense. But they’re kind of basic and unoriginal. And even worse, the information they give is often incorrect.
M: Really?
W: Yeah, so it’s dangerous to depend only on AI for research. Sometimes you have to pay to read most scientific studies. So there’s plenty of important information AI can’t even see.
M: Right, of course!
W: I do enjoy using AI art programs to create pictures of my stories, though.
M: Oh?
W: Yeah, I’m good at writing. But I can’t draw at all! Now with those pictures, I see the characters so clearly. It’s like a movie in my mind. AI allows me to create those images, and it can be really fun.
Text10
This is a passenger announcement. We’re sorry to tell you that all of today’s flights to New York’s Kennedy Airport and Boston’s Logan Airport have been canceled. This is due to poor weather conditions caused by Hurricane Tara, currently affecting the east coast of the U. S. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. Affected passengers should contact the Customer Help Desk. Here, you will be provided with an overnight stay at one of London Heathrow’s hotels. And you will be booked onto new flights as soon as we are cleared to fly. Passengers wishing to cancel and get their money back should speak directly to their individual airlines. They will be able to organize this. I’m also afraid that Flight HK648 to Hong Kong is running two hours late. This is because of the high levels of air pollution caused by the Icelandic volcano. We ask for your patience and understanding as we try to deal with these matters. Please listen out for further updates.
