B. Choose the best answer
The Downside of Empathy
What does it take to be a good person? What makes someone a good doctor, therapist or parent? What guides policy-makers to make wise and moral decisions?
Many believe that empathy (同理心) — the ability to experience the feelings of others, and particularly others’ suffering — is essential to all of these roles. I argue that this is a mistake, often a tragic one.
Empathy acts like a spotlight, focusing one’s attention on a single individual. This can have positive effects, but it can also lead to short-sighted and unfair moral actions. And it is subject to bias (偏见). Both laboratory studies and actual experiences show that empathy flows most for those who look like us, who are attractive and who are non-threatening and familiar. Empathy has its place, but reason should guide action.
For example, when we realize that a crisis such as climate change has great significance, we are going beyond empathy. A good policy maker makes decisions using reason. He or she hopes to achieve the sort of fairness and impartiality (不偏不倚) that empathy doesn’t provide.
Empathy isn’t just a reflex (下意识反应), of course. We can choose to empathize and stir empathy for others. But this flexibility can be a curse (祸根). Our empathy can be used by others, as when cunning (狡猾的) politicians use our empathy to stir up hatred (仇恨) against certain groups of people.
For those in caring professions — including doctors, nurses, teachers and social workers — compassion and understanding are critically important. However, feeling the suffering of others too strongly can lead to exhaustion, burnout and ineffective work. No good doctor is filled with anxiety when working with an anxious patient. The writer Leslie Jamison has a great description of this. “His calmness didn’t make me feel abandoned; it made me feel secure,” she wrote as she described a good doctor who had helped her. “I wanted to look at him and see the opposite of my fear, not its echo.”
Many of life’s deepest pleasures, such as engagement with novels, movies and television, require empathic connection. But when it comes to being a good person, there are better alternatives.
32.What is the author’s main viewpoint on empathy?
A.Empathy is the most important quality for all professionals.

C.Empathy always brings fair and far-sighted moral judgments.

34.Who is most likely to receive people’s empathy according to Paragraph 3?
A.Strangers with totally different appearances. B.Unfriendly and unfamiliar strangers.

35.What will a wise policymaker depend on to handle big crises like climate change?
A.Pure and strong personal empathy B.Personal preference for familiar crowds

36.What harm may too much empathy bring to medical workers?
A.Full energy and efficient work B.Tiredness and poor work performance

One sunny morning in the Shire, Bilbo Baggins sat outside his round, comfortable hobbit-hole, sipping warm tea and flipping through a book of recipes. He was a quiet hobbit (霍比特人) who loved his peaceful life — soft beds, good food, and no surprises at all. Then a wizard (巫师) appeared. His name was Gandalf, with a tall, pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak that swept the ground, a silver staff (法杖) in one hand, and a pipe in the other. He had bright eyes that twinkled like starlight, even when he looked serious.
“Good morning to you!” Bilbo said politely, though he hated strangers disturbing his quiet days. “Can I offer you a cup of tea?” Gandalf shook his head and smiled. “I don’t come for tea,” he said. “I come for an adventure. A great journey to the Lonely Mountain, to take back the dwarves’ treasure from the dragon Smaug. You’re the burglar we need, Bilbo Baggins.”
Bilbo’s mouth dropped open. He nearly spilt his tea all over his clean coat. “An adventure? No, thank you!” he cried. “Adventures mean dirt, danger, cold nights without a soft bed, and no proper meals! I’m a hobbit—I belong here in the Shire, with my books and my garden.” He hurried back into his hole and shut the door tight, thinking he’d chased the wizard away for good.
But Gandalf had other plans. He took a chalk stick and drew a strange mark on Bilbo’s round green door—a circle with a dot in the middle, the secret sign for dwarf (小矮人)-friends. That evening, there was a knock at the door, and one by one, thirteen dwarves filed into Bilbo’s home. They sang loud songs of gold and mountains, ate all his food, and talked of their quest to defeat Smaug. Their leader, Thorin Oakenshield, looked at Bilbo and said, “Gandalf says you’re brave and clever — we need you to help us sneak into the dragon’s lair (兽穴).”
Bilbo’s heart raced and his hands were shaking, but something inside him—something he’d never felt before, a little spark of curiosity—was growing. He thought of his quiet days, but he also thought of the distant mountains and the stories the dwarves told. By then, he’d made up his mind.
Gandalf lit his staff, the dwarves grabbed their axes and packs, and they walked to the edge of the Shire. The moon was bright in the sky, the grass was cool under their feet, and the road ahead stretched out into the dark, unknown woods. Bilbo took a deep breath, stepped forward, and followed the group. The adventure had begun…
Task 1:

根据第一段“One sunny morning in the Shire, Bilbo Baggins sat outside his round, comfortable hobbit-hole,…”
No, thank you!” he cried. “Adventures mean dirt, danger, cold nights without a soft bed, and no proper meals!” 此部分可以总结为“adventures would bring dirt, danger, cold nights without soft beds and no proper meals.”;根据第三段“I’m a hobbit—I belong here in the Shire, with my books and my garden.”可知Bilbo热爱平静安逸生活,可以总结为“he loved his peaceful and comfortable life in the Shire”。因此是将两个点整合为“Because he loved his peaceful and comfortable life in the Shire, and thought adventures would bring dirt, danger, cold nights without soft beds and no proper meals.”
50.根据第五段“Bilbo’s heart raced and his hands were shaking, but something inside him—something he’d never felt before, a little spark of curiosity—was growing.” 此题是对上述内容的概括总结:heart raced、hands shaking体现紧张不安,对应形容词nervous;a little spark of curiosity体现内心萌生好奇,对应形容词curious。将两个点整合为“He felt nervous but curious.”
51.根据第五段“By then, he’d made up his mind.”和第六段“Bilbo took a deep breath, stepped forward, and followed the group. The adventure had begun…”
