What will man be like in the future-in
5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can
only make guesses,of course, but we can be
sure that he will be different from what he is
today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example.Man,even
five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is
today.Now,on average,men are about three
inches taller.Five hundred years is relatively a
short period of time,so we may assume that
man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the
modern world we use our brains a great deal.
Even so,we still make use of only about 20%of
the brain's capacity.As time goes on,however,
we shall have to use our brains more and more,
and eventually we shall need larger ones! This
is likely to bring about a physical change to the
head,in particular, the forehead will grow lar-
ger.
Nowadays our eyes are in use constantly.
In fact,we use them so much that very often
they become weaker and we have to wear glas-
ses.But over a very long period of time it is
likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand,we tend to make less
use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are
likely to grow weaker. At the same time,how-
ever, our fingers will grow more sensitive be-
cause they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably
disappear from the body altogether in the
course of time because it does not serve a useful
purpose any longer.
Perhaps all these give the impression that
in the future man will not be a very attractive
creature to look at!This may well be true. All
the same,in spite of all these changes, future
man will still have a lot in common with us.He
will still be a human being, with thoughts and
emotions similar to our own.
24.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Man's life will be different in the future.
B.Future man will look quite different from
us.
C.Man is growing taller and uglier as time
passes.
D.Man's organs, functions will be useless in
the future.
25.What serves as the evidence that man is
changing?
A.Man has got stronger eyes now than he
ever had.
B.Man's hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C.Man's arms and legs have become lighter
and weaker.
D.Man has been growing taller over the
past 500 years.
26.Which of the following is TRUE about a
human being in the future?
A.He is hairless because hair is no longer
useful.
B.He has smaller eyes and wears better
glasses.
C.He thinks and feels in quite different
ways from us.
D.His fingers grow weaker because he
doesn't have to use them.
27.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Human beings will become less attractive
in the future.
B.Less use of a bodily organ may lead to its
degeneration(退化).
C.Human beings all hope for a change in
the future life.
D.We are certain about our future life and
appearance.
C
No one ever said science education was easy.
Certainly the concepts we teach, like conserva-
tion of momentum(动量守恒)or quantum me-
chanics(量子力学),can be hard to grasp.But
what really makes our teaching complicated is
that we're also trying to teach a deeper lesson
at the same time-to help students understand
the nature of science itself.
All too often, young people get the impres-
sion that science is about learning certain
"laws"and then applying them to different sit-
uations. After all, that's what we make them
do on tests,to show that they've been doing the
work. But that's not it at all.Science is the
process of building these concepts through the
collection of experimental evidence.
And while I'm on it let's call these con-
cepts what they really are-not laws, but mod-
els.Science is all about building and testing
models. It's difficult to help students under-
stand that aspect of science when we just give
them the models to begin with.Sure,in physics
we often include historical or mathematical evi-
dence to support big ideas, but that often isn't
enough.
Of course,we can't start from scratch.If
students had to build their own models from
the ground up,it would be like trying to learn
programming by inventing computers.As Isaac
Newton is supposed to have said,we stand on
the shoulders of giants. We must take models
built by others and go from there.
What I'd like to suggest is that this actual-
ly provides a great way into the adventure of
science and an opportunity to meet our objec-
tives as educators. If you can create a situation
that challenges students'assumptions and pro-
duces conceptual conflict, that's a great oppor-
tunity for learning.
28.What is the misunderstanding of teaching
science?
A.It's complicated.
B.It focuses on the nature of science.
C.It's very difficult
D.It lies in teaching and testing“laws”
29.Which way to teach science is highly recom-
mended by the author?
A.Encouraging students to always start
from scratch.
B.Providing students with some models to
follow suit.
C.Guiding students to begin with models
built by others.
D.Offering students proof to support im-
portant concepts.
30.The author cites Isaac Newton's words to
A.justify the experiment
B.praise the statement
C.show the achievement
D.support the argument
31.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Science teaching B.Concept building
C.Science learning D.Concept conflicting

A Rhode Island grower is the first in the
world to achieve three records in the hobby of
growing enormous foods. The three world re-
cords consist of the heaviest pumpkin and the
longest gourd(葫芦),And now it includes the
heaviest squash(南瓜).
Joe Jutras previously broke two records.
Joe got his third last weekend when he broke
the giant squash record. It weighed 2,118
pounds. This was at Frerichs Farm in Warren
last Saturday.
His other titles came in 2006.That is when
he broke the record for the longest gourd. It
was a 126.5-inch gourd.In 2007,he broke the
record for the largest pumpkin. It weighed in all
1,689 pounds.
Both previous records have since been sur-
passed. But Jutras is the only grower so far to
break world records in the three most competi-
tive categories.
“It feels great,”Jutras said Monday.“It'sre-
ally been a goal of mine to try to achieve this.
Jutras has been working on the three re-
cords for a decade,since his pumpkin won.He
was close to the goal a few years ago.But he
failed. Now 62,Jutras recently retired from his
work as a high-end cabinetmaker.He wants to
devote more time to his hobby.
Jutras noted that others had won multiple
world records for fruit and vegetables before.
But they won in categories such as carrots that
are not as competitive.
Jutras says his fruit is headed to New York
City.It will be on display this month at the
New York Botanical Garden.
Asked what he plans to do next,he says
he's been thinking about the bushel gourd.
"I think the record now is about 279
pounds,.”Jutras said.“That might be some
thing I might want to get into a bit.
32.What does the underlined sentence in Para-
graph 4 mean?
A.The records Jutras set in 2006 and 2007
have been broken by others.
B.Jutras was awarded a lot of money for the
two records.
C.Jutras is determined to break his previous
records.

cal Garden.
D.Jutras will feed more people

填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
Last Sunday I was thinking about the
difference between successful people and those
who don't achieve anything significant.I made
an interesting discovery. This difference may at
first look obvious, but the fact is quite the oppo-
site.36
Everyone has a purpose behind their ac-
tions.If they don't,they wouldn't take action.
37 When they take action,at the back
of their minds they think about success that
this action is going to bring them.
38 What's the purpose behind your ac-
tions'?Do you work to thrive(蓬勃发展)orto
survive?Do you go to work to feed your family
or to create an amazing lifestyle?
Different purposes will result in completely
different life experiences.People who work to
survive are the ones who fear that some unex-
pected bill will arrive. They go to bed worrying
about money and unimportant things.They
hate their employment but don't quit because
they doubt their own ability to create something
greater.I know this kind of feeling because I
was like that once. That's a very uncomfortable
state to be in because you are constantly wor-
ried about insignificant things.39 There-
fore,you cannot achieve anything great.
Now there are some people who don't ac-
cept the "Life is hard"story and they are fueled
by an entirely different purpose
They work to thrive.40 They have a
beautiful vision and they take constant action to
make that vision a reality.
A.So let me ask you a few questions.
B.This state does not allow you to be creative.
C.It lies in what motivates people to take ac-
tion.
D.Such an attitude invites great opportunities
to you.
E.And they don't think about why something
cannot be done.
F.And this makes you take even more or better
quality action.
G.But successful people have a completely dif-
ferent purpose behind their actions.

Mrs.Palin spoke as she walked to the
front of the classroom,"Next Wednesday,I'll
give you a test to check your ability as a con-
ductor. Now,select one of the composers listed
on the chalkboard.And after class,find a tape
containing the composition created by the com-
poser.During the test, use the tape player to
play the composition. When the music starts,
imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra
that performs the composer's music.And
then she smiled,"You'll receive the test in front
of your classmates.”
"What?A test in front of the classmates?
It will kill me,"I said to myself.Although
normally I performed well in music, and often
have high marks,I am quite a shy girl.After a
short while,I took a deep breath and scanned
the list of names on the chalkboard. One name
caught my attention.
“Who's that person?”I wondered.I didn't
know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom,I fixed my eyes on
that name anxiously, hoping no one would an-
nounce that name. Finally,it was my turn.I
said without a second thought,"Johannes
Brahms.Once I said the name,panic washed
over me.I sighed,"How am I going to do this?
I know nothing about the person and his com-
position. But I have to perform in front of my
classmates and teacher."
Later in the day,I went to a store and
bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms's
compositions and its relevant music notation
(乐谱).Back home,I played the tape,.and tried
to get familiar with the composition. When lis-
tening to the composition and looking at the
music score.I held a stick and moved my arms
to and fro(来回地),pretending to be guiding
an orchestra.During the following days,I kept
practicing but didn't perform quite well. The
composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came,I felt nervous as I
slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to
perform.Eventually,Mrs.Palin called my
name,“Jill,it's your turn.”
