第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
The Worlds'Best Bookshops
There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that
travelers can bring you.
Daikanyama T-site Tokyo
It is well worth visiting even ifjust to admire the building's beautiful, crisscrossed architecture.Onceyou've had
your fill of wandering three floors'worth of bookshelves, there's the bar,the coffee shop,or even the video rental
space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer.Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages.I
could have stayed hours here.
City Lights San Francisco
The three-storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poeury, fiction, translation, politics, history and the
arts.It hosts events and readings and runs a non-profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and
ideas in literature. It's opposite Vesuvio,a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat-generation writers and artists.
Shakespeare and Company Paris
I made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with
English-language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors-heartfelt
messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself,or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.
Hutatma Chowk Mumbai
A few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country.I spotted a cheap
copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp-covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs'Square). The booksellers
here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for.To me,those well-thumbed
books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.
21.In which bookshop can you buy a drink while visiting?
A.Daikany ama T-site.
B.City Lights
C.Shakespeare and Company
D.Hutatma Chowk
22.What can be learned about the book stalls at Hutatma Chowk?
A.People can meet Rudyard Kipling there
B.The book owners are amateur librarians.
C.The sellers are familiar with the books.
D.They sell the cheapest books in the world.
23.What do the four bookstores have in common?
A.They are beautifully designed.

The first time I went to Germany with my boyfriend,I was very young and hadn't been to many places. As soon
as we arrived,I had this incredible realization."I know all about this area, the food, the language.I know all about
the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest,"I said to his German family. How do you know about this?they asked,in
disbelief.
That was the first time it dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was
for it,just from growing up in New York City-that I had been everywhere before I'd ever actually gone anywhere.
I grew up in the Chelsea Projects,288 10th Avenue at 26th Street.A lot of kids there were first generation
Americans with immigrant parents who were still speaking Yiddish or Chinese or Portuguese,or just name a language,
and they were speaking it.You ate every imaginable food from the rest of the world there. You were exposed to all
different kinds of traditions.
It wasn't just that. The whole city was a classroom. All over town, you learned stuff you didn't even know you
were learning. You didn't have to be rich to learn it,either. My mom was a teacher-a great Head Start teacher-
and she made sure I experienced everything New York had to offer people who didn't have any money, because she
knew it was the greatest education in the world
We went to all the museums, which were free back then. We'd ride the bus to Lincoln Center, before it was
Lincoln Center, and watch dancers dancing there.Or we'd take the train to Coney Island. Those trips are among my
fondest memories.
New York City played a big part in making me who I am.It's where I learned that I could pursue whatever I
loved,but that I couldn't be a lazy person.The city is everything you've heard it is.It's crazy,it's horrible,it's
magnificent,it's beautiful.It's a real live wire,hard to leave.
24.What contributed to the author's knowledge of Germany?
A.Her childhood experience.
B.Her boyfriend's descriptions.
C.Her past travel adventures.
D.Her previous school education.
25.What can we learn about the author's neighborhood?
A.It was a tourist hotspot for traditions
B.It was famous for its many restaurants.
C.Kids there were born outside of America
D.Parents there spoke their mother tongues.
26.What did New York provide?
A.Diverse learning opportunities.
B.Quality education programs.
C.Financial support for parents
D.Social benefits for the poor.
27.From which book is the text most likely taken?
A.Into Unknown Skies.
B.Never Can Say Goodbye.
C.Mom is Alwvays by My Side.
D.Falling for the Hometown Girl.

AI systems are often described as "brain-like"because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help
recognize objects.Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction.Researchers from York University wanted
to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.
The researchers reversed (that familiar test.If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned, recorded
brain activity should also predict the model's internal responses.
The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic images. The
set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown against indoor, outdoor
and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the same objects in changed forms
including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic variations. This broader range helped see
whether the relationship between brain activity and AI features held across different visual styles.
The study found that AI could predict brain activity well. However, the reverse is not true.Interestingly, this is
not the case when neurons from one brain are compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance
disappears. This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ
from those used by the brain.Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become more complex. If an AI
model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity,it may not truly operate
like biological vision, even if it can perform object recognition well.
The finding challenges the common assumption that good prediction of brain activity means an AI model works
like the brain. It also reminds scientists to be careful when using such models to study how the brain works.
28.Why did the researchers carry out the reversed test?
A.To improve AI's object recognition ability.
B.To check if AI works the same as biological vision
C.To compare photos and synthetic images.
D.To prove AI can predict brain activity
29.What can we learn about the images used in the test?
A.They were all real photos of animals
B.They were of various forms and backgrounds.
C.They were mainly artistic drawings.
D.They had the same objects with identical styles
30.What is the key finding of the study?
A.AI models can't recognize objects accurately.
B.Human brains can't predict AI's inner responses.
C.AI's visual process is similar to that of the brain.
D.The imbalance between two brains is obvious.

"One person's rubbish is another's jet fuel()?Though surprising, researchers at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign claim to have developed a method to transform food waste into jet fuel.Their findings, published
in Nature Communications, show the resulting fuel can be used directly in aircraft and meets all industry standards
for conventional jet fuel
This proof of concept offers new hope for aviation to reach its net-zero carbon emission()goal in three
decades.“In a linear(线性的)economy,.we just produce something,use it and throw it away,”noted Professor
Yuanhui Zhang."Here,we recover energy and materials from waste to make a usable product, filling a key gap in
the circular economy."
The United States Environmental Protection Agency revealed transportation accounted for 29%of U.S.
greenhouse gas emissions in 2022,with commercial aviation making up 79.While battery-powered airplanes are
possible for some shorter flights, they simply lack energy for long-distance travel. Some data suggest that Sustainable
Aviation Fuel (SAF)extracted from biomass can reduce emissions by up to 80%compared to conventional jet fuel,
but its application has long been unattainable due to poor chemical components.
Food waste addresses this issue. In this new experiment, the team collected food waste from nearby processing
plants. They then used a chemical process called hydrothermal liquefaction including removing salt, ash and water
and applying catalytic hy drotreating(催化加氢处理)to removing other undesirable elements such as oxygen and
nitrogen. As a result, the new aviation fuels passed screening tests by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Theoretically,it can power commercial airplanes.
While the technology is proven pragmatic, expanding its application to meet the fuel demands of entire
passenger aircraft remains challenging, requiring time, resources, and investment."Our research solves the scientific
and engineering problems, and then the industry can step in,"Zhang said.
32.What is the importance of the findings?
A.They offer a more effective way to deal with food waste.
B.They help aircraft companies save a lot of money on fuel.
C.They provide a new way to achieve aviation's carbon goal.
D.They turn the linear economy into a circular economy worldwide.
33.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Conventional jet fuel is less environmentally friendly.
B.SAF extracted from biomass has been put into wide use
C.Battery-powered airplanes are suitable for longer flights.

One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much.36There's no value in
delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal,or informal,if the message doesn't come
across clearly.Being clear and brief-while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to
know-is a high-level communication skill. Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more
effectively.
Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their
interests.37This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
Don't use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored.Keeping your message simple and
clear will make it easier for people to understand.38 However, they're hearing it for the first time.Keep it
simple.
39
Ifyou've ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you'll know that there are few better ways to
learn new information than to teach it.Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new
concepts and policies to others.Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills.
Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you're communicating isn't urgent, consider sending an email.Written communication will
give your audience more time to review it,think it over, and follow up with questions.40
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort.

where the quiet depth of oriental love is fully presented.

One late afternoon,Tina was driving on a highway when a severe snowstorm hit with no sign before. In a short
time, the heavy snow, coupled with the strong wind, turned everything into white and made the road extremely
dangerous.
Tina later found out that this kind of storm is called a"Saskatchewan screamer, which comes on extremely fast
with high winds. It's really frightening and deadly to be caught in such extreme weather.
Unable to see the road clearly,Tina had to stop her car and call 911.The operator told her that phone calls for
help kept flooding in and all the rescuers had been called out.She suggested that Tina should wait out the storm in
her car rather than risk driving on or going out.She took Tina's information and told her that an officer would call
her back.Tina waited anxiously for almost two hours, but nobody called her yet to check in.The storm showed no
sign of stopping. What was worse,it was getting dark. The wind was still howling and the temperature was getting
lower in the car.I had no idea whom I could turn to for help,"Tina later wrote in a Facebook post."Alone and cold,
I began to panic.I was really worried I couldn't ever make it home to my family."
That was when Tina realized that it was no use waiting for help. She decided to do something herself. So she
took out her cellphone, logged on to the Google Map and determined her location. She found online a neighborhood
Facebook group for the area that she was passing through and shared a comment about her trouble with her location
marked on the map. Then all she could do next was sitting in the car, pray ing someone could make a response to her.
Fortunately,Tina's request reached 80-year-old retired rescuer Frank.

Meet Intangible Cultural Heritage
Last Saturday saw an event themed “Meeting Intangible Cultural Heritage” at our school’s Cultural Center, aimed at promoting the excellent traditional Chinese culture.
The event featured traditional craftsmanship such as paper-cutting and clay sculpture presented by inheritors of intangible cultural heritage. Along with the demonstrations came a student interactive session, in which everyone got themselves involved, creating a dynamic atmosphere. Beyond that, a documentary on shadow puppetry and Peking Opera was shown, allowing students to gain a deeper insight into the significance behind intangible cultural heritage.
The event resonated with teachers and students alike. Many students hoped that the school would organize more such events in the future, breathing life into intangible cultural heritage on campus. (116 words)

M: Yes. It's for their safety online. The technology companies must block underage users, or they' ll face heavy fines.
(Text2)
M: Hello.
IW: Hello. We have a reservation. The name’ s Margaret. A table for three.
M: Yes, OK. If you'd like to come this way, please.
W: Thanks.
(Text3)
W: I'm going to book a hotel on the internet.
M: But why don't you ask the travel agency first? I'm pretty sure they have some special deals with hotels in Boston.
W: That sounds like a plan. I' ll check with them right now.
(Text 4)
W:I wish it were summer. I'd love a little bit of sunshine.
M: Yes, it's pretty bad, isn't it? Anyway, spring will be here before too long.
(Text 5)
W: Mr. Green, Tess just called. She asked if you had talked to Simone yesterday about the new project.
M: OK, I' ll call her back. By the way, did Ms. Palmer call about my presentation tomorrow?
W: Yes. She asked if you needed any help with it.
(Text 6)
W: I'm afraid the doctor is running a little late this morning? He probably won't be able to see you until around 10 o’ clock-that’ s in about half an hour(6). Do you want to come back a bit later? Or I could bring you a cup of coffee, and you could wait in the reception area.
M: Oh, well, there's no point in leaving now that I'm already here, is there(7)?
W: That's entirely up to you, sir.
M: Um ... actually, I think I' ll accept your kind offer of a coffee(7).
(Text 7)
W: How's your fashion blog going?
M: I've only uploaded a few posts, so I' ve received very little feedback so far(8). Also, the background color still needs improvement. But it amazes me that it took just three hours to set it up.(8)
W: Where do your ideas for posts come from?
M: I live in a fashionable city, so I just walk around town while paying attention to what everyone is wearing(9). I don't have time to travel hundreds of miles to the latest shows, and stealing ideas from other online sources, well, just isn't my style.
(Text 8)
W: Oh, I've finally finished grading all the papers! What a term! What are your plans for next term, Paul?
M: You' re right, Sarah. This term was tough. Those English essays of my students were a Shakespearean tragedy. Next term, I'm thinking about more practical activities(10), maybe some field trips. I think they will leave the students with a stronger impression than lectures.
W: Sounds like a good strategy. I'm considering adding more technology to my math lessons(11).
M: Wow, you have a talent for bringing fresh ideas to the table(12). Maybe you could even lead a tech project in educational methods.
W: Now, that's an exciting thought! It's about exploring new ways to improve student performance.
M: Definitely It's about keeping the students engaged and making the subject matter more understandable. We should cooperate on some of these ideas and see where it takes us.
W: Agreed. Let's brainstorm and see how we can combine these concepts.
(Text 9)
M: I don't really know much about computing. Is there any training available?
W: Yes. We have beginner, medium and advanced courses(13).
M: I don't think I'm up to anything more than beginner. I'd better stick with that(14).
W: OK There are four computer labs now. Lab l is in this Computer Science Building, Lab 2 and Lab 3 are in the Office Building, and Lab 4 is in the library. Your course is in Lab 2(15).
M: OK. I don't know what time the course starts.
W: Advanced starts at 4:30 in the afternoon on Mondays, but yours is the day after at 5:00 in the afternoon(16).
M: Are there any other times as I' ve got a part-time job then?
W: Yes, you could try Thursday at 2 p. m. How's that?
M: Even worse as I'm not free then. I think I have to rearrange my part-time job then.
(Text 10)
W: Hello, everyone! I've been an educator for over a decade. My online teaching journey started when I created a social media channel to teach math two years ago. Every week, I post a video that is about 8to 10 minutes long(17). These videos are designed to be independent lessons with examples and practice problems. To make the content more appealing, I use vivid videos and real-world applications to explain abstract concepts. And I guess this approach has been a hit. After all, my channel has grown to over 50,000 followers(18). However, the path hasn't been smooth. I initially struggled with video production(19),
such as lighting and sound quality. It took several months of trial and error to reach a professional level. I also had to learn how to create interactive content that could hold students attention.Besides, I launched a blog with weekly articles on advanced topics and study tips. Despite the challenges, the feedback from students has been rewarding. Many have shared how my videos have helped them understand concepts they struggled with in school. I'm glad to see the impact of my work. And I hope my journey can inspire you to explore digital teaching(20). Thank you for listening.
