(来源:The Guardian, 19 April 2026)Independent bookstores are showing that technological change does not always erase older forms of culture. The Guardian reported in April 2026 that about 422 independent bookshops opened in the United States during 2025, a rise of 31%. The figure surprised people who had long expected online retail and large chains to make small bookshops disappear.
Many of the new stores compete by offering something a website cannot easily copy: a sense of place. They hold author talks, reading groups and children’s events, and staff members often recommend books personally. Some shops also sell coffee, gifts or local products. In this way, the bookstore is changing from a simple point of sale into a community space.
The comeback does not mean the digital age has ended. Online shopping remains powerful, and running a small shop is still difficult. Instead, the trend suggests that old and new can develop side by side. A business may survive not by refusing change, but by discovering which human needs technology does not fully replace.

Passage 1
Every time a new emoji appears on a phone, there is a technical system behind it. In September 2025, the Unicode Consortium released Unicode 17.0, adding 4,803 characters to the global standard. Among them were eight new emoji characters, including a trombone, an orca and a distorted face.
Unicode matters because computers need a shared way to represent text. Without a common standard, the same character might not travel reliably from one device or platform to another. Emoji are part of this system. The Unicode Emoji specification describes which symbols count as emoji and how sequences should be handled.
New emoji are not simply chosen because they look amusing. Proposals are reviewed according to selection factors, and accepted characters must work within a global communication system. Different companies may draw the same emoji in slightly different styles, but the underlying code remains shared.
The continuing growth of emoji shows how written communication changes with technology. Yet it also shows the importance of standards: new forms of expression become useful only when people on different systems can understand the same digital signal.
1.What is the main purpose of Unicode according to the passage?
A.To make every company draw identical pictures.
B.To provide a shared system for representing digital text.
C.To replace written languages with pictures.
D.To limit the number of symbols people can use.
2.How many new emoji characters were added in Unicode 17.0?
A.Four. B.Seventeen.
C.Eight. D.One hundred and sixty-three.
3.Why are emoji proposals reviewed before acceptance?
A.To make sure they can function in a global communication standard.
B.To ensure every new emoji is used only by teenagers.
C.To prevent different cultures from using the same symbol.
D.To make digital messages longer and more formal.
4.What idea best connects the passage with the unit theme?
A.Technology makes language stop changing.
B.Emoji have already replaced ordinary writing.
C.Digital change makes common rules unnecessary.
D.New communication forms develop together with technical standards.
Passage 2
For centuries, libraries 1.________ (serve) as places where people can read, learn and share knowledge. In the digital age, however, their role is becoming broader. A UNESCO brief released in 2025 describes more than 2.8 million libraries worldwide as important partners in building a more 2.________ (include) digital future. As societies work 3.________ (close) the digital divide, libraries can provide internet access, digital-skills training and trusted information. The global network, 4.________ is supported by about 1.6 million staff members and more than half a million volunteers, reaches people in many different communities. UNESCO argues that connectivity becomes truly 5.________ (meaning) only when people know how to use it well. In many places, library users 6.________ (support) not only with devices but also with guidance. By 7.________ (help) people judge information, protect privacy and use online services, libraries turn access 8.________ opportunity. The report stresses 9.________ digital inclusion is not simply about putting more people online. It is about making sure that technology can be used safely, confidently and 10.________ (effective).
Passage 3
Remote work first looked like a temporary response to a crisis. Several years later, it has become part of a longer change in how cities function. Researchers found that working from home remained at about one day per week globally for college-educated employees from 2023 into early 2025. 1.________
One effect can be seen in where people spend money. When fewer workers travel downtown every day, some restaurants, shops and services near large office buildings lose customers. At the same time, neighbourhood businesses closer to people’s homes may gain them. 2.________ Researchers have called this pattern the “Donut Effect”.
The change does not mean city centres will become empty. Hybrid workers still travel to offices on some days, and many people continue to value face-to-face meetings, culture and entertainment. 3.________ This is why the wider metropolitan area can remain strong even while the centre changes.
Cities are responding in different ways. Some are considering how unused offices might become housing, schools or mixed-use spaces. Others are improving public areas so that downtown districts attract people for more than work. 4.________
The larger lesson is that technology can change geography as well as behaviour. A laptop may seem like a small object, but when millions of people use it to work from different places, transport, housing and local business can all be affected. 5.________
A.A successful response may therefore require city centres to serve several purposes.
B.For this reason, all office buildings will certainly disappear within a few years.
C.Hybrid work changes the centre of activity without necessarily destroying the city.
D.The story of remote work shows that social change often spreads far beyond its starting point.
E.Researchers therefore recommend that every employee work from home five days a week.
F.Economic activity can move outward from the centre while staying within the same city region.
G.This suggests that the pandemic accelerated a change that did not simply vanish afterward.
Passage 4
Paying for everyday purchases is becoming faster and more digital. A 2025 brief from the Bank for International Settlements reported that cashless payments continued to rise across many economies. Credit transfers and electronic money grew especially strongly in emerging and developing markets, while fast-payment systems encouraged people to make more frequent small transactions.
Yet the same report did not describe cash as a thing of the past. Although the amount of cash in circulation has generally declined relative to digital payments, demand for cash withdrawals has stabilised in many places. This suggests that people may use cash less often at the checkout while still wanting it available.
Cash can matter for reasons that go beyond habit. It can work when digital systems fail, and it may be easier to use for people who lack reliable internet access, bank accounts or confidence with new technology. Digital systems, meanwhile, offer speed and convenience that cash cannot match.
The changing payment landscape therefore looks less like a simple replacement and more like a new balance. The future may be increasingly digital, but older methods can continue to serve needs that newer ones do not fully meet.
1.What is the main trend described in the passage?
A.Digital payments are growing while cash still keeps a role.
B.Cash use is increasing faster than every digital method.
C.Fast payments are disappearing in developing economies.
D.People have stopped withdrawing cash completely.
2.What does “stabilised” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Became illegal. B.Started to rise rapidly.
C.Remained at a relatively steady level. D.Was replaced by online shopping.
3.Why may cash remain useful according to Paragraph 3?
A.It always costs less than digital payment.
B.It can support access and resilience when digital options are limited.
C.It makes every purchase easier to track.
D.It requires a smartphone and internet connection.
4.What is the author’s main point?
A.New technology always destroys older systems.
B.Cashless payment should be avoided by young people.
C.Payment habits never change once they are formed.
D.Old and new payment methods can coexist during change.
Passage 5
For generations, people have dreamed of a tool that could remove language barriers instantly. In 2025, researchers reported a machine-translation system that brought that 1.________ a little closer. The model can 2.________ speech from more than 100 languages and produce spoken output in dozens of target languages. Instead of using several separate programs, it 3.________ speech and text tasks within one system. This can make communication more 4.________ and may help travellers, students and health workers cross language 5.________. Yet researchers also point out an important limit: not every language has equal 6.________ to digital resources. Languages with 7.________ training material may receive weaker results because modern AI depends heavily on large amounts of 8.________. Accuracy also involves more than changing words. Tone, cultural references and 9.________ can affect meaning. For this reason, machine translation should not simply 10.________ human judgement in situations where a misunderstanding could matter. A better view is to treat AI as a 11.________ that expands communication while people remain responsible for checking meaning. At the same time, multilingual technology can help 12.________ languages by making more content available to speakers. Its future will depend on careful design, better data and international 13.________. The history of translation technology therefore shows that communication tools 14.________, but the human need to understand one another 15.________.

13. A.competition B.collaboration C.separation D.confusion
14. A.freeze B.return C.change D.fail
15. A.remains B.disappears C.travels D.breaks
Passage 6
Streaming has transformed the music business, but one older format keeps returning to record shops: vinyl. The Recording Industry Association of America reported that U.S. vinyl revenue reached about one billion dollars in 2025, rising 9.3% from the previous year. It marked the nineteenth straight year of growth for the format.
The numbers are striking because paid streaming still produces far more music revenue. Vinyl is not winning by becoming the fastest or cheapest way to hear a song. Instead, buyers often value the physical object, the large cover art and the experience of choosing and playing a record.
This does not mean everyone is returning to old technology. Most listening is still digital, and vinyl remains a smaller part of the market. But its long revival shows that convenience is not the only thing people value. Sometimes a slower format survives because it offers an experience that feels different from the dominant technology.
The story resembles the return of some independent bookshops. A new technology can become the main system without removing every older one. Change may create room for old forms to find a new purpose.
1.Why is vinyl’s growth described as striking?
A.It has become cheaper than all streaming services.
B.An older physical format is growing in a mainly digital market.
C.It is now the only way people listen to music.
D.Streaming revenue fell to zero in 2025.
2.What does “physical object” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.A live concert. B.A mobile phone.
C.The record itself. D.A streaming account.
3.What can be inferred about many vinyl buyers?
A.They may value experience and ownership as well as convenience.
B.They refuse to use any digital technology.
C.They buy records only because they are cheaper.
D.They are mainly interested in faster listening.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Why Streaming Has Ended B.The Cheapest Way to Hear Music
C.Digital Music Without Change D.An Old Format Finds New Life
Passage 7
Books are changing in format, but print remains surprisingly strong. In August 2026, the Association of American Publishers released its annual estimate for 2025. It put total U.S. publishing revenue at about $33.4 billion, 2.5% higher than in 2024.
Digital formats continued to grow. Digital audio revenue rose by more than 5% in 2025, and e-book revenue also increased. Online retail remained the largest sales channel, showing how strongly technology has changed the way readers discover and buy books.
At the same time, print still accounted for just over half of total publishing revenue. In the Trade, or consumer-book, market, print formats represented 76.3% of revenue. Physical retail revenue also increased, even while online shopping remained important.
The figures make the story of change more complicated than a simple move from paper to screen. New formats can grow quickly while older ones remain popular. For publishers and readers, the future may be a mixture of print, audio and digital reading rather than a single winner.
1.What was the estimated total U.S. publishing revenue for 2025?
________________________________________________________________________________
2.Which digital format mentioned in the passage grew by more than 5%?
________________________________________________________________________________
3.What share of Trade publishing revenue came from print formats?
________________________________________________________________________________
4.Why is the story more complicated than a move from paper to screen?
________________________________________________________________________________
5.What lesson about change does the final paragraph suggest?
________________________________________________________________________________
Passage 8
Social media has changed how teenagers keep in touch. A Pew Research Center survey published in 2025 found that many U.S. teens believed social media helped them feel more connected to friends. For young people whose friendships continue after school through messages, videos and shared posts, online communication can make distance feel smaller.
At the same time, connection is not the same as comfort in every situation. The survey found that 52% of teens said they would feel very comfortable discussing their own mental health with a parent, while 48% said the same about a friend. Only 12% said they would be very comfortable having such a conversation with a teacher.
Teens also had mixed views about social media itself. Many valued the way it supported friendship, but roughly one in five said social media hurt their own mental health. This does not produce a simple conclusion that online communication is either good or bad.
Instead, the findings show how communication has become more flexible and more complicated. A message can create connection, but the quality of communication still depends on who is speaking, what is being discussed and whether people feel safe enough to be honest.
1.What positive effect of social media is mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.It removes the need for face-to-face friendship.
B.It can help teens feel connected to friends.
C.It makes every difficult conversation easier.
D.It prevents distance between all family members.
2.With whom were teens least likely to feel very comfortable discussing mental health?
A.A parent. B.A friend. C.A family member. D.A teacher.
3.Why is there no simple conclusion about social media?
A.It can support connection while also causing problems for some teens.
B.Teenagers no longer use social media to communicate.
C.All teens have exactly the same online experience.
D.The survey measured only adults.
4.What is the main idea of the final paragraph?
A.New tools automatically improve every conversation.
B.Online communication has made honesty unnecessary.
C.Communication changes, but human trust still matters.
D.Teachers should replace parents in difficult conversations.

Dear Ms Green,
I'm writing to share some ideas for our Then and Now exhibition.
First, in Communication Then and Now, students can compare letters, early text messages, emojis and AI translation, then discuss what has become easier and what still requires human understanding. Second, in Reading & Shopping Then and Now, we can create a small display showing print books, e-books and the changing role of bookstores. Visitors can vote for the experience they value most. These activities can show that progress often means adaptation and coexistence rather than simply replacing the old with the new.
I hope these ideas can help students understand change in a thoughtful way. Looking forward to your reply.

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.D

C.Digital Music Without Change D.An Old Format Finds New Life
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.D
结合vinyl buyers、cover art和playing a record可知physical object指唱片本身。故选C。
故选A。
1. About $33.4 billion. 2. Digital audio. 3. 76.3%. 4. Because digital formats are growing while print remains strong and physical retail can also grow. 5. New and old formats can coexist instead of one completely replacing the other.
About $33.4 billion.
Digital audio revenue rose by more than 5%。 Digital audio.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.C

Yours,
Li Hua
