Passage1 We don’t know how different our life will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet - even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today - we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.

D.How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050.
Passage2 New Scientist magazine’s chief reporter Adam Vaughan recently published “How your day will look in a carbon- neutral (碳中和) world.” Here, he imagines what a typical day would be like in the future — through the eyes of Isla, “a child in 2050” — after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放). Vaughan acknowledges the writing is out of imagination but it is concluded by research, expert opinion, and experiments happening right now.
Isla lives in the United Kingdom — will it still be a united kingdom in 2050? — and her life looks pretty much like life does today: She has a house, a car and a job. There are forests, and giant machines taking carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere. It all sounds like a green and pleasant land, but it didn’t sound like the future to me. It’s just like the life we are living now.
It’s an interesting exercise, imagining what it will be like in about 30 years. I thought I would give it a try: Here is my story about Edie, living in Toronto, Canada in 2050.
Edie’s alarm goes off at 4: 00 a. m. She gets up, folds up the bed in the garage that is her apartment and workshop. She considers herself to be very lucky to have this garage. The only people that live in houses these days are multi-millionaires from all over the world, especially from Arizona and other southern states, wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water. They can afford the million-dollar immigrant visa fee.
At that time, there are no office or industrial jobs anymore: Artificial Intelligence and robots will take care of that. The few jobs left are in service, culture or health care. Luckily, Edie has her job.
She checks the balance in her Personal Carbon Allowance (PCA) account to see if she has enough to buy another battery for her e-bike. If she doesn’t have enough then she will have to buy carbon credits, and they are expensive. She sets her alarm for 6: 00 p. m. when the streets of Toronto will come alive again on this hot November day.
1.What can we know about Adam Vaughan’s passage?
A.It is about creative imagination. B.It mainly describes advance in science.
C.It is his vision of the future. D.It focuses on solutions to carbon emissions.
2.What does the author think of Isla’s life?
A.Satisfying. B.Extraordinary. C.Meaningful. D.Ordinary.
3.Why do people like Canada according to Edie?
A.People want to get better education. B.The living expense there is rather low.
C.It has a cool and comfortable temperature. D.The water in Canada hasn’t been polluted.
4.What does the author intend to tell us?
A.What our life will be like in 2050. B.Two woman’s entirely different lives.
C.A look into Adam Vaughan’s Life. D.How we can handle the carbon problem.

Passage4 Imagine Dad and I are watching the Olympic Games in our media room someday in the future. The screen drops down to cover one wall. We give our robot Sylvia our orders for popcorn and juice for dinner. She is only a machine but she looks like a human and helps with the housework.
We are having popcorn for dinner tonight because something is wrong with our oven (烤箱). It is broken and keeps on repeating that it doesn’t remember how to cook. Dad thinks the shooting star passing by Earth has caused the problem.
“I did see a shooting star yesterday,” I said, “Maybe that’s why I had trouble getting Sylvia started this morning. She turned around and around, hardly stood when she tried to take a step, and almost fell backwards. She finally started moving towards me, but then suddenly turned, and went backwards. I thought she was going to knock into a wall. It was lucky that she got her balance in the end and successfully stood up.”
At last, Sylvia arrives with our popcorn and drinks. I look at the screen and watch the Olympic Games. Sylvia watches it too. Dad gives her coins as a tip. Sylvia thanks him for the coins and starts to leave the room. Then she turns back to where we are sitting. I hear some clicking sounds. The sounds mean that she is searching her memory chips for information. “During the Olympics I should get medals, not coins,” she says.
Dad and I just look at each other. Sylvia doesn’t seem to know that robots aren’t supposed to think. Then we burst out laughing and award Sylvia a gold medal.

Passage5 What if — and it is a big what if — you could meet your future self? What a very strange question, but one that is worth asking.
I’m a psychologist, well aware that talking about the theoretical consequences of traveling in a time machine can sound strange, coming from someone like me, but my research in the last 15 years has not been too far from this topic. I have explored the reasons why people have such a hard time making long-term decisions, and how they can finally make better choices.
People often imagine their future self as another person, which creates problems. To make sense of why, think about someone in your life who you barely know: a neighbour or a co-worker, for instance. If that stranger asked you to make a sacrifice (牺牲) for him, for example, to lend him money, you might politely decline. If we treat our future selves the same way, then it makes sense why we sometimes give in to short-term desires rather than do something we’ll feel better about in the long run.
If only we could try to make our future selves seem more like people like our partners, loved ones, or best friends. One way is to think of future selves in more concrete and vivid ways. In one recent study on the willingness to save for the post-working life, I cooperated with a bank and found that when customers were shown age-progressed images of themselves alongside encouraging messages about saving, their willingness was about 16% higher than people who merely received the encouraging messages.
You don’t need to wait for time travel or advanced AI for answers that you can act on. Simply taking a bit of time to picture this meeting can help you make better choices now, closing the divide between who you are today and who you’ll be tomorrow. All you need is a little imagination, and the willingness to put yourself in the shoes of a person you currently treat as a stranger.
1.What does the author indicate about time travel?
A.It’s relevant to psychology. B.It’s too unrealistic to explore.
C.It’s a key part of his research. D.It’s an unscientific topic for him.
2.Why do people struggle with making long-term decisions?
A.They lack decision-making ability. B.They barely consider future selves.
C.They view future selves as unfamiliar. D.They focus more on short-term desires.
3.What were the customers more likely to do after seeing their age-progressed images?
A.Save for their family. B.Put money into their retirement.
C.Think of future selves frequently. D.Give future selves some messages.
4.How can we make better choices according to the author?
A.Put ourselves in the shoes of someone else.
B.Use technology to get future selves visualized.
C.Try to have a meeting with our future versions.
D.Improve emotional connections with future selves.
Passage6 Life in the future will be very different from that today. Between then and now many changes will take place (发生), but what will the changes be?
The population is growing fast. There will be many people in the world and most of them will live longer than people now. Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And computer studies will be one of the most important subjects at school then.
People will work fewer hours than they do now and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travelling. Travelling will be much easier and cheaper. And more people will go to other countries for holidays.
Work in the future will be different too. Robots(机器人) can do dangerous and hard work. Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.

A.do dangerous work B.do all the work
C.do interesting work D.do easy work
4.Which is the best title(标题) for the passage?
A.Life in the past B.Changes of computers
C.Robots in the future D.Life in the future
Passage7 Welcome to your future life!
You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging (抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!
You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles (粒子) much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change clothes’ color or pattern.
You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge has read the chip (芯片) that contains information about the milk, and it knows the milk is old. In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip.
It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve. Such “smart technology” is all around you.
So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli, “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example. What will be the next?

D.Cars will be able to drive automatically.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.Food and clothing in 2035.
B.Future technology in everyday life.
C.Medical treatments of the future
D.The reason for the success of new technology.
Passage8 What distinguishes an outstanding city? The Global Cities Index assesses cities based on diverse criteria, including:
·Business – The presence of multinational corporations. How many global companies are in the city? Does the city do a lot of international business?
·People – The city’s ability to attract talents globally. Does the city attract talented people from around the world? What’s proportion of residents with higher education?
·Media – The accessibility of varied information channels. How many residents have Internet access?
·Entertainment – The availability of leisure and cultural activities. Does the city have many entertainment options: museums, sports, music, and different types of restaurants?
Future Leaders
Most cities on the Global Cities Index are strong in certain areas. Beijing’s strength, for example, is business, while Los Angeles’s strength is people. Which cities will become more powerful in the future?
·Asia: Beijing and Shanghai are both business centers and will continue to grow. In a few years, they will potentially match New York’s influence. Indian cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi have a lot of business potential, too.
·South America: urban centers like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil will gain influence. In these cities, the middle class is growing, and life for many people is improving.
·The Middle East: Istanbul in Turkey, Cairo in Egypt, and the cities of the United Arab Emirates such as Dubai will hold more power in international politics and business, especially in helping East and West work together.
In 10 years, the top cities on the index may be different, but one thing is certain: With over 50 percent of the world’s people now living in urban areas, tomorrow’s global cities will be more powerful than ever.
1.Which aspect is considered in the Global Cities Index?
A.Education. B.Climate. C.Transportation. D.Location.
2.Which parts of the world are predicted to grow in the area of business?
A.Asia and Europe. B.Asia and South America.
C.Asia and the Middle East. D.South America and the Middle East.
3.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Similarities between top cities. B.The ways to become global cities.
C.Daily life in fastest-growing cities. D.Forecast on future influential cities.
Passage9 Nowadays, everyone seems to hope to go into space and live on new planets. Instead of depending on another pre-existing planet, could we make a new planet by ourselves?
First of all, if we were to live on it, we should find a good place in space to put the new planet. We would want it to be in a habitable zone, which means the planet should be at the right distance from its star to make sure there would be perfect temperatures and most importantly, liquid water.
We’d also need the right materials to make the planet. Our Earth is made up of many different elements (元素). If we made our own new planet, we’d probably want it to have similar elements and a similar structure (结构). We’d also want enough water to form some oceans.
But even if we get all of the materials, creating a new planet like Earth could have many troubles. It might be something more like a huge space station. It would be pretty expensive if we wanted it to be super big.
We would probably also need a lot of food because there is going to be many scientists and astronauts out in space working on this project!
According to NASA, each astronaut uses about 0.83 kilograms of food per meal, including 0.12 kilograms of packaging (包装) material. Without the weight of the packaging material, we’d need about 780 kilograms of food just to feed one astronaut for a year.
Putting all these together could make it possible to make our own planet one day! In fact, creating a new planet would probably require a very modern technology and there would be tons of other things to think about. And if this is possible, it won’t likely happen within a very long time.
1.To create a new planet, which of the following should we first do?
A.To collect materials similar to Earth. B.To prepare plenty of food for astronauts to eat.
C.To design its inner structure. D.To find a proper place to set it.
2.How much food will an astronaut really eat for each meal?
A.About 0.12 kilograms. B.About 0.71 kilograms.
C.About 0.83 kilograms. D.About 0.95 kilograms.
3.What does the author think of making a new planet?
A.It is a waste of time and money.
B.It may be a dangerous thing for humans.
C.It is impossible to come true in the near future.
D.It should be one of NASA’s next plans.
Passage10 Education in 2080 is distinctive from education in the 2020s. Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child’s education looks like in 2080. Her name is Shemsy. Shemsy is 13, and she is confident and loves learning.
Shemsy does not go to school in the morning because schools as you know them no longer exist. The institution was abolished as it was widely thought of as more like a prison or a factory than a creative learning environment. Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages. They are where intergenerational learning happens, in line with the belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Every year, Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”. Shemsy is actively engaged in designing her education and has to propose projects she would like to be involved in to contribute to and serve her community. She also spends lots of time playing as the role of play in learning has finally been recognized as essential and core to our humanity. Shemsy works a lot collaboratively. Access to education is universal, and higher education institutions no longer differentiate themselves by how many people they reject yearly. Variability between students is expected and leveraged (利用) as young people teach one another and use their differences as a source of strength. Shemsy naturally explores what she is curious about at a pace she sets. She still has some classes to take that are mandatory for children globally: Being Human and the History of Humanity.
We invite you to think about your vision for education in the year 2080, what does it look like, who does it serve, and how does it transform our societies?
1.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.There are different types of education.
B.The present education needs improvements.
C.Education and economy are closely associated.
D.The goal of future education is fundamentally different.
2.What do we know about the Learning Hub that Shemsy goes to?
A.It accepts students of all ages. B.It promotes competition.
C.It discourages individualized learning. D.It is all about play-based learning.
3.What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Tough. B.Satisfactory. C.Optional. D.Required.
4.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.An Example to All B.A Vision for Education
C.A Challenge for Education D.A Journey into the Future

Passage3 What’s the Outlook for 2035?
When we think about the future of work, anxiety inevitably creeps in. However, you don’t have to be afraid because you are in the driver’s seat.
By 2035, most organizations will not have large, company-sponsored 1 offices but instead will rent virtual meeting rooms for both full-time and contract employees to work and meet when they need to. Thanks to the rise of the online rating systems, customers will 2 your products and services in real-time and will expect concerns to be addressed immediately.
We must also deal with 3 that we have never encountered before. As of this year, there will be five generations in the workforce, led by many traditionalists(born before 1945)and baby boomers(born 1945—1963)who are determined to contribute to their organizations beyond typical 4 age. Due to the small size of Generation X(born 1964—1979), the millennials(born 1980—1995)are moving into 5 positions an average of 10 years earlier than their predecessors (前辈) and require extensive learning to be effective managers.
The oldest members of Generation Z(born 1996—2012)are now graduating from college and arriving in the 6 expecting to use technology for instant business impact. Organizations that want to keep top Gen Z talent must provide 7 that allow them to do their jobs with maximum efficiency.
Members of all generations who wish to be gainfully employed will come face-to-face with a different set of hiring practices. 8 , your competition for jobs won’t simply be in your backyard but will be all over the world thanks to virtual and 9 work and larger populations of working-aged people in China and India, which will shortly become the leading 10 of qualified talent.
In the work world of 2035, team work will be shorter-term in nature and 11 high levels of human and machine cooperation. Constant 12 will be a given, meaning that if you want to keep pace with technology and use it to drive business results, you can’t wait for someone else to hand you a solution. You must take development into your own hands.
So, if you’ re a leader, how can you 13 your organization to compete in this very different world? The answer is simpler than you might think. Focus on your best people, in all 14 from all backgrounds, and with various work arrangements—and 15 them with the right tools.

1.Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050?
A.Because there will be less face-to-face communication.
B.Because the number of people will become much smaller.
C.Because people won’t like making friends with each other.
D.Because people won’t communicate with each other much often.
2.The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.how people will use robots to do the housework
B.that computers will do all the things for human beings
C.that machines like computers and robots will help people a lot
D.how people will use computers to communicate with each other
3.Which of the following will happen in 2050 according to the text?
A.Environment will be more polluted with cars.
B.It won’t be difficult for people to travel to other planets.
C.The way of spending holidays will be the same as that of today.
D.The relationship between people will be more important than that of today.
4.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.What our life will be like in the year 2050.
B.What high technology will appear in the year 2050.
C.How people will communicate in the year 2050.
D.How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.A
根据第二段的“In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet — even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. (到2050年,我们几乎每天都会使用电脑。我们将通过互联网结交新朋友,甚至我们的丈夫或妻子也会以这种方式认识。)”可知,在2050年,人们主要通过电脑进行交流,而很少进行面对面的交流,人与人之间的关系也就淡薄了,因此那时的人们会感到有点孤单。故选A。
根据第三段的“Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050.。(到2050年,计算机还将在许多其他活动中帮助我们。)”以及全段可知,第三段主要告诉人们像计算机和机器人这样的机器会在多方面帮助人们。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段的“Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. (度假也将完全不同。每个人都可以去其他星球或月球旅行。)”可知,在2050年,旅游度假也将会变得不同,每个人都能前往其他星球旅行。故选B。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“We don’t know how different our life will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it. (我们不知道未来的生活会有多不同。我们只能试着想象一下。)”可知,文章总体在探讨2050年的生活将会是什么样子,涉及到了人际关系、科技发展、环境保护等方面。故选A。
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.C 4.A

根据第二段“and her life looks pretty much like life does today: She has a house, a car and a job. There are forests, and giant machines taking carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere. It all sounds like a green and pleasant land, but it didn’t sound like the future to me. It’s just like the life we are living now.(她的生活看起来和今天的生活很像:她有房子,有车,有工作。那里有森林,还有从大气中吸收二氧化碳的巨型机器。这一切听起来像是一片绿色和宜人的土地,但对我来说,这并不像未来。就像我们现在的生活一样。)”可知,作者认为Isla的生活跟我们现在生活一样,很普通,没有什么新奇的。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段“wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water. (希望移居气候凉爽、水资源丰富的加拿大)”可知,人们希望搬到加拿大是因为其气候凉爽、水资源丰富。故选C项。
4.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“New Scientist magazine’s chief reporter Adam Vaughan recently published “How your day will look in a carbon-neutral (碳中和) world. ” Here, he imagine s what a typical day would be like in the future — through the eyes of Isla, “a child in 2050” — after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放). (《新科学家》杂志的首席记者亚当·沃恩最近发表了一篇题为《在一个碳中性的世界里,你的一天会是什么样子》的文章。在这里,他通过“2050年的孩子”艾拉的视角,想象了在我们减少碳排放之后,未来典型的一天会是什么样子。沃恩承认这篇文章是出于想象,但它是通过研究、专家意见和目前正在进行的实验得出的结论)”以及第三段“It’s an interesting exercise, imagining what it will be like in about 30 years. I thought I would give it a try: Here is my story about Edie, living in Toronto, Canada in 2050.(这是一个有趣的练习,想象30年后会是什么样子。我想我应该试一试:这是我关于2050年生活在加拿大多伦多的伊迪的故事。)”可知,文章中作者先是介绍了Adam Vaughan关于2050年生活的想象,然后又介绍了自己对2050年生活的另一种想象;由此可知,作者想告诉我们2050年我们的生活会是什么样子。故选A项。

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.D
根据第二段中“I’m a psychologist, well aware that talking about the theoretical consequences of traveling in a time machine can sound strange, coming from someone like me, but my research in the last 15 years has not been too far from this topic. (我是一名心理学家,我很清楚,谈论乘坐时间机器旅行的理论后果听起来可能很奇怪,因为这是像我这样的人说的,但我过去15年的研究并没有离这个话题太远)”可推知,作者表明时间旅行与心理学有关。故选A项。
根据第三段中“People often imagine their future self as another person, which creates problems.
根据第四段中“In one recent study on the willingness to save for the post-working life, I cooperated with a bank and found that when customers were shown age-progressed images of themselves alongside encouraging messages about saving, their willingness was about 16% higher than people who merely received the encouraging messages. (在最近一项关于为退休后的生活储蓄意愿的研究中,我与一家银行合作,发现当客户看到自己年龄增长的照片以及鼓励储蓄的信息时,他们的意愿比只收到鼓励信息的人高出16%左右)”可推知,顾客在看到自己年龄变化的照片后更有可能为他们的退休生活存钱。故选B项。
4.推理判断题。通读全文,根据第四段中“If only we could try to make our future selves seem more like people like our partners, loved ones, or best friends.(如果我们能试着让未来的自己看起来更像我们的伴侣、爱人或最好的朋友就好了)”和最后一段中“Simply taking a bit of time to picture this meeting can help you make better choices now, closing the divide between who you are today and who you’ll be tomorrow. All you need is a little imagination, and the willingness to put yourself in the shoes of a person you currently treat as a stranger. (简单地花点时间想象一下这次会面可以帮助你现在做出更好的选择,缩小今天的你和明天的你之间的差距。你所需要的只是一点想象力,以及愿意设身处地为一个你现在视之为陌生人的人着想)”可推知,根据作者的观点,我们需要改善与未来自我的情感联系才能做出更好的选择。故选D项。

根据文章第二段“First of all, if we were to live on it, we should find a good place in space to put the new planet.(首先,如果我们要住在它上面,我们应该在太空中找到一个安放新行星的好地方)”可知,要创造一个新的星球,我们首先应该找个合适的地方放置它。故选D。
根据文章倒数第二段“Without the weight of the packaging material, we’d need about 780 kilograms of food just to feed one astronaut for a year.(如果没有包装材料的重量,我们需要大约780公斤的食物来养活一名宇航员一年)”可知,宇航员一天吃三顿,一年一共365*3=1095顿,那么,每顿饭需要780kg/1095=0.71kg。故选B。
根据文章最后一段“In fact, creating a new planet would probably require a very modern technology and there would be tons of other things to think about. And if this is possible, it won’t likely happen within a very long time.(事实上,创造一颗新行星可能需要非常现代的技术,而且还有很多其他的事情需要考虑。即使这是可能的,也不太可能在很长时间内发生)”可推知,作者认为创造一个新的星球在不久的将来是不可能实现的。故选C。

Due to the small size of Generation X(born 1964—1979), the millennials(born 1980—1995)are moving into 5 positions an average of 10 years earlier than their predecessors (前辈) and require extensive learning to be effective managers.
