A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his free time.Hobbyists
keep pets,build model ships,watch birds,climb mountains,grow flowers,fish,ski,
skate, swim, etc.Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays and perform
on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies, and from
coins to stamps. So why do people need to have hobbies?
People have hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship,
knowledge and relaxation.Sometimes they even make some money by following a
hobby.Hobbies help people relax after hard work and provide a balance between

retired.Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow an interesting
hobby.

found that hobbies are helpful for patients to recover from physical or mental illness.
Hobbies give patients something to do,and provide interest that keeps them from
thinking about themselves.

But some people who were free enjoy hobbies.People today have more time than
before for hobbies.Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spend on
their jobs.More people retire at an earlier age than before. Those who have developed
hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their free hours.
Sir William Osier,a famous Canadian doctor, expressed the value of hobbies by
saying,"No man is really happy or safe without a hobby."Obviously,I couldn't agree
more!

What do young people like to do in their free time?If you think they are all
playing video games or watching short videos on their phones, you might be wrong.
In 2026,many young people are turning to something quite different "grandma
hobbies".
“Grandma hobbies'”is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint(刺绣)
and gardening. These are things that people's grandmothers used to enjoy. But now,
Gen Z.people born between 1995 and 2009)are falling in love with them
Emma MacTaggart,26,is a good example. She used to work long hours in
banking. After work, she would just look through her phone for hours-a habit called
"getting lost in her phone".To change this, she and her roommates decided to try
needlepoint.Soon,they became“fully obsessed(着迷的)”.Emma said it was so
relaxing that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of
looking at a screen.
These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they
finish a gift or a dish, they feel proud and successful.Social media helps them become
more popular.Young people share their works online and make friends. Some even
turn their hobbies into business.Take Anna Weare,a 31-year-old blacksmith ()
as an example-people now wait a year for her handmade products.
So next time you see a young person gardening, don't be surprised. It's the
newest cool thing to do!
