Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List to Visit
Sligo Passage Tombs, Ireland
Located 125 miles northwest of Dublin, Sligo offers beautiful landscapes and Ireland’s largest cluster of prehistoric tombs. Over 100 stone burial chambers, some 5,000 years old, are scattered across the hills, with underground passages once believed to lead to a mythical underworld. The most dramatic is Queen Maeve’s tomb atop Knocknarea Mountain. Both Keshcorran and Carrowkeel are free to visit — just a 10-20 minute walk from parking lots.
Real Felipe Fortress, Peru
Ten miles west of Lima, this seaside fortress was rebuilt after the 1746 earthquake as a five-sided fort with a moat and a mile-long stone wall. Tourists can explore its 24-acre grounds and two military museums, and enjoy views of the sea where Spanish ships once retreated. The fortress witnessed Peru’s final victory over Spain in 1826 and is open daily, with guided tours available.

Many students at college, including myself, arrive with a very distinct image of who and what we are going to be after graduation. Personally, I had my next ten years planned out before even starting my freshman year.
My parents work in pharmaceuticals (制药业), so I knew about the career prospects. I had taken many scientific elective courses in high school and excelled in AP Chemistry, so I thought this degree would be something I could do well in and love for the next four years and afterwards in a career.
In the fall of my freshman year, I signed up for a chemistry, a calculus, and an English class. I always enjoyed reading, so I thought the English course would be a fun addition and a possible minor to add to my studies. During that semester, I did well in all of my classes, but I felt I hated my science and math courses. I always liked math and science in high school, but something about the courses in college simply didn’t connect with me.
The one thing that made me actually enjoy my first semester was my English course. I felt tired, just thinking about more chemistry classes the next semester. I thought that higher-level chemistry courses might be more interesting because they would become more specialized, but I continually found myself disinterested in the content of the courses. By this time, I had added my English minor, and the things I had learned in my minor were so much more exciting to me.
I went with the flow until my sophomore year. I called my parents in tears. I couldn’t hold it in anymore: I DIDN’T WANT TO DO CHEMISTRY! I was completely ready for them to be disappointed and tell me to stick with it; thankfully they were the exact opposite. My parents knew I was enjoying my English minor and asked me if I had any interest in continuing into a major. After talking with my parents and my advisor, I took the plunge. I switched to an English major. I felt like the biggest weight was lifted from my shoulders.
Now, I could not be happier about switching my major. I have discovered my newfound love and capabilities. There have been so many opportunities that would not have happened if it hadn’t been for switching my major and career path.

A. Supportive of her pursuit. B. Relieved at her decision.
C. Annoyed by her attempt. D. Concerned about her future.
6. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Purposeful and focused. B. Courageous and growth-minded.
C. Persistent and confident. D. Disciplined and self-aware.
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining.
B. Curiosity keeps the mind young.
C. The wise man is always a learner.
D. The heart sees what the eyes cannot.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence
According to a third of researchers surveyed for Stanford University’s annual report, artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to a “nuclear-level catastrophe”. The report’s authors note that while AI systems now “demonstrate capabilities unimagined a decade ago”, they are still “likely to give false information, often biased, and can be tricked into serving harmful purposes”. This contrast, as seen in innovations like ChatGPT, has heated the global debate on AI’s true impact.
On the one hand, AI offers transformative advantages. Its clearest benefit is increased efficiency: by processing large amounts of data at very high speed, AI enables faster decision-making and raises productivity. A study found that AI can reduce patient waiting time in A&E by an hour. Similarly, tasks that take humans days — like sorting 10,000 lines of a spreadsheet — can be completed in minutes. Beyond efficiency, this automation promises more leisure time. Some experts believe shorter workdays and three-day weekends could become the norm. Furthermore, AI drives scientific breakthroughs, aiding cancer diagnosis and speeding up drug development through tools like AlphaFold.
However, these benefits come with significant risks. Ethically, AI presents a basic challenge. Its purely logical decision-making lacks human emotion and moral sense, making it difficult to build real ethics into algorithms. AI also fails to capture the human factors that guide real-life decisions. Beyond ethics, AI threatens jobs. A McKinsey study estimates AI could displace about 15% of workers — 400 million people — by 2030. This potential for job losses is often seen as AI’s biggest downside. Compounding these issues is the risk of power monopolisation (垄断), as control over this technology could be concentrated in a few tech giants.
In conclusion, AI is a double-edged sword. Its impact will be decided not by the technology itself, but by human guidance and proper regulation. A balanced approach is essential to harnessing (利用) its potential while protecting against its harms.
8. What can we infer from Stanford University’s annual report?
A. AI has caused a nuclear-level catastrophe. B. AI has both upsides and downsides.
C. ChatGPT is the most innovative AI product. D. Most researchers worry about AI’s safety.
9. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. AI can reduce patient waiting time to zero.
B. AI will make longer workdays a global norm.
C. AI can complete all time-consuming tasks in minutes.
D. AI helps promote medical research with advanced tools.
10. What does the underlined word “compounding” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Worsening B. Solving C. Responding D. Explaining
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To warn people of the serious risks of AI.
B. To introduce the latest development of AI technology.
C. To call for proper regulation of AI to balance its pros and cons.
D. To argue that AI’s advantages are more important than its risks.
D
Much of the methane (甲烷) in air comes from human activities. But methane has natural sources too. Microbes (微生物) in wetland soils and trees also release methane.
Vincent Gauci, an environmental scientist, knew the trees in wet places, like the tropics, give off methane from their trunks. Then, he wanted to study its release from trees in drier soils. “We were surprised to see the exact opposite,” says Gauci. The trees were actually taking in methane.
Trees taking in and releasing gases is gas exchange. Researchers typically measure methane exchange low on the trunk, near the ground. But Gauci’s team measured higher up on the tree, thinking this would better estimate how much methane the whole tree might send out.
Gauci’s two students measured methane release from trees in the UK and Panama, setting up a gas-exchange chamber on a tree to monitor how much methane it’s absorbing or sending out. They expected methane emissions would drop as they measured higher up the trunk. Their guess at first seemed to hold. Higher up the trunk, methane release dipped. But at chest height, the numbers dropped below zero — here, trees were absorbing methane.
To further check their findings, the team analyzed trees from four regions — Brazil, Sweden, Panama and the UK. The result was the same at all sites. Overall, the trees took up more methane than they released. Using data from the four sites, the team estimated all the world’s forests may be absorbing 50 million tons of methane every year.
The scientists believe methane is taken in by microbes that live in tree bark. On average, trees absorbed more methane than they released, with faster uptake in warmer climates.
Gauci says, “People release far more methane than what nature can remove. So we have to cut back on fossil fuels. Trees are even more important for climate than we thought. We must be aware of the need for immediate action to safeguard this vital natural resource.”
12. What aspect of the research surprised Gauci?
A. Its theory. B. Its process. C. Its findings. D. Its functions.
13. What can we learn from the research?
A. Its data was measured globally. B. It was done by Gauci and his coworkers.
C. Its participants were the same as before. D. It involved methods different from typical ones.
14. What does Gauci stress in the last paragraph?
A. Trees can remove all methane. B. Protecting trees is crucial.
C. Methane has no natural sources. D. Methane is important to climate.
15. Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A. Trees may be big climate heroes B. Gauci found out trees’ growth secret
C. Researchers studied trees in four areas D. Microbes can release and absorb methane

Technological progress is transforming education, from AI chatbots to the growing accessibility of virtual-reality (VR) tools that expand the boundaries of the classroom. It offers the promise of equal learning opportunities for every student, yet has potential problems. ____16____
In 2023, the big story in technology and education was generative AI, following the introduction of some chatbots that produce text seemingly written by a human in response to a question or suggestion. ____17____ In response to that, some schools move to adopt policies around students’ use of the tool. In the meantime, many schools are beginning to explore potential opportunities.
The use of immersive (沉浸式的) technologies like augmented reality (AR), VR, and mixed reality (MR) is also expected to rise rapidly in the classroom, especially as new high-end devices integrating these realities hit the marketplace in 2024. Students can create their own local interactive 360-degree scenes with basic devices. ____18____
____19____ While it often features dynamic videos and motivates students with rewards, the downside is that rewards are specific to the activity at hand, which may not extend to learning more generally. More creative game patterns that give students points for rethinking an approach or adapting their strategy, rather than only rewarding them for quickly producing a correct response, are needed.
In brief, technology challenges our traditional views on education. It has the risk of reproducing biases (偏见) but also offers new teaching and learning prospects. ____20____ We also should explore new educational methods to make the most of these technologies.
A. We should rethink our educational practices.
B. Gamification of learning activities is another growing trend.
C. Educators immediately worry about students using it to cheat.
D. Integrating AI into VR will further enrich the learning experiences.
E. And the teacher’s acceptances of these new technologies varies greatly.
F. This has caused more attention to technologies taking center stage in the classroom.
G. However, some educators may overlook the risks and overemphasize the prospects.

As a new reporter at a local newspaper office, my biggest dream was to write a front-page story that could touch readers’ hearts. However, to my disappointment, I was assigned to Mr. Henderson, a most cold and strict editor in the office.
He was a man of few words who never smiled at anyone. He constantly rejected my drafts, leaving messy red-ink notes all over the empty space of my papers. “Where is the core fact?” “Where is the emotion?” he would write. Those notes were harsh (严苛的), but strangely, they were also incredibly detailed, always pointing out exactly where and how a story was weak. Still, facing his sharp eyes and endless criticism day after day, I felt so defeated that I seriously considered quitting. I was convinced that he just didn’t like me.
Then, a huge story broke. A historic building downtown, one that had stood for over a century as a symbol of our town, suddenly caught fire, and our newspaper needed an urgent headline report. Yet, right at that important moment, Mr. Henderson unexpectedly fell ill. Before going to the hospital, he walked slowly to my desk, his face pale. Without saying a word, he placed his old, thick notebook on my desk, which he always carried with him. He tapped on it, and left me in total charge of the big report.
Racing against time, I rushed to the smoke-filled scene, interviewed shocked witnesses, and gathered facts. The big fire had destroyed the roof, leaving only the black brick walls standing. When I hurried back, only three hours remained before the final deadline.
Sitting before the computer with my shaking hands, I typed anxiously. I rewrote the opening three times, deleting sentences back and forth. Each version felt lifeless. I just couldn’t find the core fact or the emotion Mr. Henderson always demanded.
The wall clock counted down to my failure. Depressed, I pulled at my hair. My heart sank as the letters seemed to laugh at my helplessness.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, my eyes fell upon Mr. Henderson’s notebook.

C
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. A

True Learning Starts with Active Output
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
True Learning Starts with Active Output
Many students love doing multiple-choice questions but hate subjective ones, because subjective tasks require us to think hard and write down our own ideas, which takes time and effort.
However, multiple-choice questions only test recognition, not deep understanding. True learning needs active output. To improve, first write a short explanation after choosing an answer. Besides, try teaching a difficult point to a classmate. If you can explain clearly, you’ve mastered it.
True learning starts with active output — writing, explaining, and creating. Only when we stop just choosing and start producing does knowledge become ours.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, my eyes fell upon Mr. Henderson’s notebook.

Two days later, Mr. Henderson walked in with a wide smile, holding a fresh newspaper.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Suddenly, my eyes fell upon Mr. Henderson’s notebook. Flipping it open with trembling fingers, I discovered it wasn’t filled with grand theories but meticulous observations: the smell of smoke mixed with old rain, the chipped paint on the doorknob, the exact shade of ash on the windowsills. Most strikingly, he had recorded a quote from the building’s caretaker years ago: “These walls remember every footstep.” Inspired, I wove these sensory details and the poignant quote into my lead. As the final seconds ticked away, I hit “Send” with a racing heart, praying the soul of the story had finally emerged from the ashes.
Two days later, Mr. Henderson walked in with a wide smile, holding a fresh newspaper. He placed it on my desk, folded to reveal my byline on the front page. “You found the heartbeat,” he said, his voice softer than I’d ever heard. I stared at the headline, tears blurring my vision. He tapped the margin where he once wrote harsh critiques, now replaced by a single note in his neat script: “This is where the truth lives.” In that moment, I realized his coldness had been a crucible, forging not just my skills, but my understanding of empathy in storytelling.
