Staten Island’s Freshkills, once a dumping ground (垃圾倾倒场) for New Yorkers, is now a breathtaking park. The first part was opened to the public in October. With its grassland, hills and waterways offering hiking and superb bird-watching, this is a great example of urban habitat restoration.
Freshkills, known for its stench, was in operation for 53 years. Locals used to avoid the place and had to hold their breath when they passed by. It was the world’s largest dumping ground and was so huge that it could be seen from outer space. Freshkills was closed 22 years ago, and 21 acres of it were opened in mid-October.
“I’m happy to see that this area has become a new green space. It is a home for local plants and animals and gives the residents of Staten Island a place to be outdoors, exercise and breathe fresh air. The newly opened park features walking paths, hiking trails, seven acres of native seed plots, a bird-observation tower, and a deck that overlooks the hills, grassland and waterways,” says a local called Adams. “I used to avoid approaching the place, but now I’m looking forward to exploring it.”
This project is entirely focused on environmental management. Solar panels provide lighting in the parking lot and restrooms, while the toilets are composting (堆肥), returning waste to soil. A complex system was used to decompose the landfill waste and to protect the new topsoil. There are also plans to reuse the gas and liquid byproducts of the decomposing waste. There was once 29,000 tons of trash dumped daily at Freshkills.
Today, the site is totally transformed, home to 1,000 acres of grassland habitat that was seeded with native grass mix. This is attracting many birds that have not been seen for years. Locals will come to Freshkills to relax and connect with nature.

Robots have long been drawing inspiration from animals, with the creation of robot dogs or snake - shaped robots. And yet, the field of robotics is far less enthusiastic about the other kind of living things — plants. Barbara Mazzolai, an Italian roboticist owes this to a misconception about plant behavior: that they cannot move or think. “It’s not true at all,” she says. To challenge this view, Dr Mazzolai and her team recently launched a machine called “FiloBot”, a robot based on a climbing species.
To survive, a climbing plant must switch between several different behaviors. In forest environments, it must first grow out of the soil and travel along the ground in search of a support to hold onto, such as a nearby tree. Once a support is located, though, the plant fixes itself around the object and then grows toward the light. To choose the best angle to grow upwards, a climbing plant uses its shoots (芽) to receive information about light and gravity.
FiloBot has sensors on its main shoot. It can 3-D-print its body with plastic and grow at a controllable rate. These functions, researchers found, enabled FiloBot to cross gaps, and find things to attach to. The lack of heavy on-board computing device means that it is light and requires minimal care. while its slow pace means that it doesn’t disturb things around it, making it possible to move through a complex, unseen environment, or monitoring disaster sites.
For now, FiloBot is still being tested. Its tendrils (卷须) have not left the laboratory. Still, it has already been employed in deconstructing plant behavior. For example, it was long assumed that climbing plants find their supports by growing towards shade, though the exact mechanism was unclear. FiloBot could imitate this behavior by detecting far-red light, which is typical of shaded areas, providing clues to how plants do it.
8. What is the misconception about plants?
A. Their physical forms. B. Their biological structures. C. Their body language. D. Their behavioral traits
9. What is an advantage of FiloBot?
A. It adapts to different environments. B. It has a solid metal body.
C. It is attached to huge computers. D. It moves at a fast pace.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The limitations of FiloBot. B. The current use of FiloBot.
C. The components of FiloBot. D. The unique design of FiloBot.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for this text?
A. A New Project in Robotics Research B. A Glimpse into the World of Robotics
C. A Plant-inspired Innovation in Robotics D. A Misunderstanding about Climbing Plants
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

The fight against cancer is witnessing exciting new developments, with scientists exploring various innovative approaches. One promising discovery comes from the Amazon rainforest, where researchers have identified a substance in the poison of a local scorpion (蝎子). This molecule (分子) has shown a stunning ability to destroy breast cancer cells in laboratory tests. Its effect is comparable to that of a common chemotherapy drug, suggesting it could become a powerful new weapon in treating this widespread disease.
Another strategy, known as theranostics (治疗诊断学), cleverly combines diagnosis and treatment into a single process. Scientists attach special radioactive markers to molecules that are designed to target specific tumors (肿瘤). These markers allow doctors to clearly see the cancer using imaging equipment. Once a tumor is confirmed to have absorbed a large amount of the molecule, doctors can then replace the imaging marker with a more powerful radioactive one. This stronger radiation is then used to attack and kill the cancer cells directly, offering a highly targeted treatment method.
Beyond these, researchers are also making progress with personalized cancer vaccines. In one advanced method, scientists create a unique vaccine for each patient by combining cells from a healthy donor with the patient’s own cancer cells. This custom-made vaccine trains the patient’s immune system to recognize and fight their specific tumor. Early studies with patients suffering from cancers like melanoma and glioblastoma have shown very positive results, indicating this approach could be a major breakthrough.
Furthermore, technology is playing a crucial role. Artificial intelligence is now being used to analyze brain scans of patients with brain cancer. By applying AI to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), researchers can predict a patient’s response to chemotherapy with high accuracy. This non-invasive method could help doctors make better decisions about treatment plans without the need for painful biopsies.
These diverse efforts, from natural toxins to high-tech AI, all share a common goal: to develop more effective, personalized, and less harmful ways to conquer cancer. The future of cancer treatment is becoming increasingly hopeful.
12. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A To argue for the protection of the Amazon rainforest.
B. To introduce several new approaches to fighting cancer.
C. To compare the effectiveness of different cancer drugs.
D. To explain the working principles of chemotherapy.
13. What can be inferred about the substance from scorpion poison?
A. It is more effective than existing chemotherapy drugs.
B. It works by preventing cancer cells from dividing.
C. It could be a potential alternative to traditional treatments.
D. It has been successfully used to cure breast cancer.
14. How does the theranostics method work according to paragraph 2?
A. It uses a single radioactive substance for both diagnosis and treatment.
B. It first locates tumors with markers and then attacks them with radiation.
C. It relies on artificial intelligence to identify cancer cells in the body.
D. It creates a personalized vaccine to boost the patient’s immune system.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of cancer treatment?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.

When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. ____16____Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. ____17____ Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it?
____18____ When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted.____19____But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”.____20____ However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.

The summer night was serene (宁静), with crickets sunging and a gentle breeze rustling the trees around us. We had found the perfect camping spot, deep in the woods, far from the distractions of daily life. No Wi-Fi, no schedules — just our family, together. This was what camping was all about — unplugging, connecting, and makıng memories.
As the fire burned down, we crawled into our tent, the kids falling asleep almost instantly. Everything was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
In the middle of the night, I woke with a start, my heart pounding. Something was outside our tent. The sound was faint but persistent — soft footsteps, a shuffle here and there, followed by a pause.
I nudged my husband awake. Sighing, Dan reached for the flashlight and unzipped the tent. “Oh,” he said softly. “It’s just a dog.” I scrambled out of the tent to take a look. A tan, short-haired dog stood at the edge of our campsite, pacing back and forth. His fur was dirty, and he looked underfed.
“Poor thing,” I whispered. “He must be hungry.” Dan grabbed some leftover hot dogs, offering one to the dog. To our surprise, the dog backed away, his eyes darting nervously toward the trees.
By now, the kids had woken up, and Tommy was beside himself with excitement. “Adoggy!” he shouted, much too loud for the quiet night.
“Shh,” I warned. “We don’t want to scare him.”
Sarah, our daughter, ever observant, tilted her head and said, “Something’ s wrong, Mom. Look how scared he is.”
She was right. The dog seemed torn between staying and fleeing, pacing anxiously, his tail tucked. Then we heard it — a heavy rustling coming from the trees behind us. The dog froze, his head snapping toward the sound, and a low growl rumbled from his throat. His hair rose as he positioned himself between us and the forest.

【答案】范文
Time slowed as a large bear emerged from the darkness. Its eyes glinted in the light, and it raised its head, sniffing the air. The air felt heavy with tension, and the kids huddled close behind me, their faces pale with fear. The dog barked sharply, and the bear turned its attention to our camp, its massive form lumbering toward us. “Car,” I whispered urgently. “Everyone to the car. Now.” We moved as one — Dan scooping up Tommy, me grabbing Sarah’s hand — as the bear moved closer. The dog stayed between us and the bear, growling low but never attacking, as if buying us time. My hands trembled as I fumbled for the car keys, finally unlocking the doors with a chirp. We scrambled into the car, the dog leaping in just as Dan slammed the door. From the safety of the SUV, we watched in horror as the bear tore through our campsite, ripping our tent apart like it was paper, devouring anything remotely edible.
We sat with the dog in the car, watching the bear leave. The bear finally finished and wandered back into the woods. The campsite was unrecognizable, with the tent shredded and the cooler overturned. The dog, now quiet, sat proudly on Tommy’s lap, his eyes still fixed on the trees. “He saved us,” Sarah whispered, stroking his dirty fur. Tommy nodded, hugging the dog tightly. “We should keep him,” he said, his voice full of determination. Dan and I exchanged a look and smiled. “I think he’s already decided to stay,” I said softly. As the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the ruined campsite, we knew one thing for sure — our family had grown by one brave and loyal member.

4. What does the underlined word “stench” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Fresh and cool air. B. Unpleasant smell.
C Breathtaking scenery. D. Abandoned grassland.
5. What does Adams think of current Freshkills?
A. Unapproachable. B. Undeveloped. C. Fascinating. D. Well-equipped.
6. What does the park feature?
A. Its complex history. B. Its strict management. C. Its rapid urbanization. D. Its environmental protection.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To advertise the recreational facilities of Freshkills Park.
B. To report on the transformation of a former dumping ground.
C. To analyze the environmental benefits of urban habitat restoration.
D. To advocate for the reuse of landfill sites worldwide.

The fight against cancer is witnessing exciting new developments with scientists exploring various innovative approaches.
A. To argue for the protection of the Amazon rainforest.
D. Cautious.
