How to find ideas for inventions
Do you want to create something new? Here is some simple advice on how to find great ideas.
Think about things you use every day. 1 Many inventions are not completely new, but they improve upon old things. You don't need to be an expert. Start with what you know well. If you are good at computers, maybe you can design a helpful app. Remember, small changes can make a big difference.
Look for small problems around you. Is there anything that troubles you or your family? An invention that solves a common problem can be very useful. Talk to friends about their daily difficulties. 2
Keep an open mind. 3 The Slinky toy was born when a spring (弹簧) fell off a shelf. The popsicle (冰棒) was invented by a boy who left his drink outside in winter. So, don't give up on strange ideas. Write them down and think about them later. They might lead to something great.
4 Improving old things can lead to successful new inventions. Pay close attention to how people use everyday items. Ask questions, stay curious, and try to make things work better. Everyone can be an inventor if he or she just starts thinking and trying.
A. Try to invent something useful first.
B. Remember to observe the world carefully.
C. Can you make them better or easier to use?
D. Their problems might give you a great idea.
E. Mistakes or accidents can help create something wonderful.
Ⅶ.阅读与表达

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Qin dynasty, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against Chu, he had to report the situation to his king in time. But his pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was thinking of ways to improve it.
One day after hunting, Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on horseback. Fat and heavy, one rabbit's tail left a long trail (踪迹) on the ground. Suddenly, Meng Tian got the idea from the rabbit's tail. “If I tie the rabbit's hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?”
On arriving home, he tied the rabbit's hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit's hair was too smooth to write well, and using it wasted a lot of cloth. Meng was so disappointed that he threw his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.
However, Meng never gave up and kept trying all the time. A few rainy days later, he happened to find his “invention” thicker in a stone hole. He picked it up with hope. The brush worked beautifully on cloth. It turned out that the special water had cleaned the oil from the hair. Meng succeeded at last.
Thanks to Meng, the brush pen is playing a key role in Chinese culture. Today, students are taught to use brush pens in school. It helps them better understand Chinese culture.

2. What did Meng Tian use to make his first new pen?

Reagan, age 15, created a video channel(频道) called Throw Leftie. On it, she shares creative solutions to everyday tasks that are more difficult because of her cerebral palsy (脑瘫).
As Reagan became more independent, she would search for new ways to do things that were difficult. She realized her creative methods could help others with the same problems, so she started her video channel to share her new ideas.
The name of her channel comes from Reagan's love for lacrosse (长曲棍球). Her coaches always said, “Throw Leftie”——a move she could not do. Instead of giving up the sport she loved, Reagan found a new way to play: she became a goalkeeper (守门员). This position requires much less hand-changing and running, so she can enjoy the game in her own way.
Many parents of children with cerebral palsy reached out to Reagan. To help these children, Reagan talks with about 26 of them on the phone every month. During their talks, they share their difficulties and give each other advice. She even invites other people to try to live like her for a minute. This helps people understand how much creative thinking is needed to get used to daily life like hers.
Reagan sets a true example for us all. She helps young people with disabilities find confidence in themselves. Her story also shows that difficulties can be turned into chances to become better and bring light to others.

More than 2,000 years ago, one man used wisdom instead of weapons(武器) to stop a war. His name was Mozi,a great thinker who believed that people should 1 one another and avoid fighting.
During the Warring States Period, the powerful state of Chu planned to attack the much weaker state of Song. A famous craftsman(工匠) named Lu Ban had 2 siege ladders(攻城梯) to help Chu's army climb over city walls. When Mozi heard the news, he set out for Chu at once.
Mozi travelled for ten days and nights to reach Chu. The road was long, and his feet were badly hurt, but he did not give up. He wanted to stop the 3 before people were harmed.
When Mozi arrived, he first spoke to Lu Ban and tried to reason (劝告) with him, but Lu Ban said the 4 had already been made by the King of Chu. Mozi then 5 the King. He explained that Chu already had plenty of land and food, while Song had very little. Attacking Song, he said, was like leaving 6 food at home to steal poor food from a neighbour.“Well said! But Lu Ban has already built siege ladders for me,” the King said. “And we’ll 7 win!”
Mozi then met Lu Ban again. They 8 simple objects at hand and acted out a war on a table. Each time Lu Ban 9 how Chu's army would attack Song, Mozi showed how Song could stop it. After many tries, Lu Ban had no new ideas, but Mozi still had more ways to defend (保卫) Song. In the end, the King of Chu gave up his 10 to attack Song.
Thanks to Mozi’ s courage and clear thinking, a terrible war was avoided, and many lives were saved.

The Chang’ e 7 probe(探测器) will travel to the moon in 2026. Thanks to some school kids in Hunan, it will carry a special Chinese national flag.
During a regular meeting of Lushan International Experimental Primary School's science club, Deng Haoxuan raised an interesting question, “There is no wind on the moon, so how can we make the flag fly?” This question led to a heated discussion among his classmates.
Deng remembered that magnets (磁铁) can push away from each other, and he thought this might help the flag fly. However, when they tried using magnets, they found them too heavy, and the flag kept falling.
Then, Deng and his team came up with a new idea. They glued wires to the flag. When the electricity passed through these wires, they created a magnetic field, which made the flag move as magnets do.
The kids didn't stop there. They learned that the idea might work in space. After months of continuous testing and countless adjustments, they finally discovered the ideal position to place the wires.
“It's amazing that our idea worked, and soon we'll see the Five-Starred Red Flag fly in space,” Deng said with excitement.
