For our reading project, I borrowed the thickest English book in the library. My friends looked impressed, and I felt proud. But after three evenings, I was still on page four. I looked up so many words that I had 81 the story.
Mrs Chen, the librarian, noticed that my bookmark had hardly moved when I brought the book back. She asked what I enjoyed reading. “Stories about people solving problems,” I said. She handed me a much 82 book with clear pictures. I worried that my friends would think it was childish.
“Try one chapter,” she suggested. “Then tell me whether you want to know what happens 83 .” I read it on the bus and missed my stop because I was so interested. For once, I remembered the characters instead of a list of 84 .
When our group met, one student laughed at my thin book. I nearly put it away. Then another student asked about the 85 . I explained how a girl found a lost dog by following small clues. Soon everyone was offering ideas about the ending. I realized I could 86 something to the discussion.
Over the next month, I read two more books at that level. I began to understand some new words from the 87 , although I still checked important ones. Later, I returned to my first book. It was still difficult, but I could follow a few more pages.

Nowadays, more and more students talk about smart learning. But what is smart learning? It is not about studying day and night without rest. It is about learning in a 111 and effective way.
Li Wei used to spend lots of time on his lessons, yet his grades were not good. He 112 late every night doing homework. However, he seldom reviewed what he had learned. When he met difficult points, he just skipped them 113 asking teachers or classmates for help.
Later, his head teacher told him the idea of smart learning. Li Wei began to 114 his study habits. He made a daily study plan and divided big tasks into small 115 . Before exams, instead of reading all books from cover to cover, he reviewed his notes and marked key knowledge. When he came across something he could not understand, he would write it down and 116 for answers actively.
He also used online learning tools wisely. He watched short educational videos to explain difficult knowledge, 117 he never spent too much time playing games online. Little by little, he spent 118 time on study but got much better results.

Li Jia was one of them. She spent plenty of time reading textbooks, 122 she could hardly remember what she had read. When she prepared for tests, she stayed up late to recite texts. But much information slipped out of her 123 quickly. She felt upset and didn’t know what to do.
Later, her psychology teacher told her some memory skills. Li Jia decided to 124 her learning ways. She learned to connect new knowledge 125 her old experiences. For example, when learning new English words, she imagined funny pictures in her mind. Besides, she reviewed knowledge in time 126 waiting until the day before exams.
She also knew that enough rest was good for memory. She 127 studying for hours without breaks. Every night she got enough sleep instead of staying up. Good sleep helps the brain store what we have learned.
Slowly, something changed. She didn’t spend 128 more time on study, but she could remember more things. Toby wondered what was wrong with Grandpa. He was always 131 things those days. Toby was told that Grandpa might have early memory loss, and his family planned to send him to a care center because he needed special 132 .
Toby didn’t like the idea. But he could only visit Grandpa now and then. The first time Toby went there, he felt a deep 133 —Grandpa sat quietly by the window, staring at an empty chair.
“Look, I brought you something,” Toby said, taking out a small wooden box. Grandpa opened it slowly. Inside were old things: a fishing hook, a railway 134 , a dried leaf. “Do you remember these?” Toby asked hopefully.
But Grandpa only smiled faintly. He didn’t seem to 135 Toby at all.
The 136 thing happened on the next visits. Grandpa looked at the box, touched the leaf, but said little. “Who are you, boy?” he once asked.
Toby held back tears. “I’m your 137 , Toby.” Grandpa nodded slowly, “The boy who brings the box.”
One afternoon, something changed. Grandpa picked up the railway ticket and suddenly his eyes lit up. “We took this train to the sea,” he whispered. “Your grandma packed sandwiches.” Tears 138 down his cheeks.

Our brain stores all kinds of memories, but many students struggle to remember knowledge well. To start 141 , we need to tell short-term memory and long-term memory apart. Short-term memory is weak. Once you run 142 of energy or feel anxiety, your mind will wear 143 easily. When we learn many new words and passages, it’s easy to mix facts 144 without useful memory skills.
There are many practical techniques to boost our memory. We can divide long passages 145 several small parts. Drawing graphs and outlines helps organize messy images in our heads. When you go 146 a text, tick key sentences to deepen your memory. In your 147 , happy moments like family picnics form a stable memory chain and make it simpler to recall information later.
One-size-fits-all methods never suit everyone. Some people remember images quickly, while others rely on written outlines. Heavy pressure will break your stable memory and bring sadness. We should keep all these useful skills 148 mind and practice them daily. If you fill your brain with too much fuel of information at once, you will feel tired and your memory will fail. Small daily practice builds a steady memory system and stops you from being worn 149 .
We often mix up similar knowledge without clear plans. If you divide information into groups, you won’t get confused. Every time you finish a lecture, spend minutes making simple graphs to record key points. All these small ways work together to make your memory effective. Never feel sad about weak memory. As long as you practice properly, you can store more things in your brain and recall them fully 150 needed.

It was my grandmother’s 70th birthday last week. We wanted to give her a gift that would 151 our love. After much discussion, we decided to create a memory book filled with stories and photos from her life.
We spent days 152 old photos. My father found a photo of Grandma holding me as a baby. “She looked so happy here!” he said. Then, we wrote short notes to explain each 153 . My sister added colourful drawings to make the pages look 154 .
On her birthday, Grandma opened the 155 and smiled. “This is the most special gift I’ve ever received,” she said. She sat down, turning each page 156 , as if she didn’t want to miss any detail.
That evening, we ate cakes and listened to Grandma’s stories in her youth. She told us how she met Grandpa and the experiences they had. Her words made us laugh and the house 157 happiness.
This experience taught me that the best gifts are not about the 158 .What truly matters is the effort and love we put into them. Even a simple book can become 159 when it carries true memories.
Grandma now keeps the book on her coffee table. Every time visitors come, she shares it 160 . It reminds us that family is the greatest treasure of all.

Good memory does not only belong to a few lucky people. 129 you use proper skills and keep practicing, your memory can become much better. It is not how hard you recite, 130 how well you use memory skills that really matters.

Toby 139 that memory might fade, but love and warmth stayed somewhere deep. From then on, he brought the box every weekend.
Sometimes Grandpa forgot names. But he never forgot 140 he loved.
