For a long time, the apartment building where I lived was quiet. Although we shared the same lift every day, none of us knew each other’s names. We only looked at the floor numbers. We were neighbors behind locked doors, but almost strangers. Last winter, a wooden box in the lobby changed that.
An old teacher, Mrs. Smith, put the box there with a sign: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” On the first day, there were three bottles of honey inside. I thought it was only a small act of kindness and would not last long.
But the “Gift Box” soon became a bridge that connected everyone in the building. The honey disappeared and was replaced by children’s books and a bag of apples. I once left an old umbrella there, and two days later, I found a note from Apartment 4 B, “Thank you. My son and I used it on the way home from school. We got home dry.” For the first time, 4 B was not just a number, but a real person.
One Sunday night, a water pipe in my room broke. Feeling helpless, I ran down and left a message in the box. Minutes later, Mr. Lee from the fifth floor came with his tools. While fixing the pipe, he told me he had lived alone since his children moved away. “I used to think no one here needed me,” he said. “We thought we were just exchanging things, but we are actually sharing the stories of our lives,” he added.
The box is larger now, and it has taught us that a community is not just made of bricks and stones, but of the love that we share when we help each other. Now, when we meet in the lift, we look at each other and smile.
31. Why were the neighbors almost strangers at first?
A. Because they only shared the same life. B. Because they often stayed behind doors.
C. Because they hardly ever communicated. D. Because they seldom met in the apartment.
32. What does the writer mean by saying the box became a bridge?
A. It held children’s books. B. It kept the building quiet.
C. It brought neighbors closer. D. It offered people convenience.
33. Why does the writer mention the broken water pipe?
A. To describe the writer’s trouble. B. To show help among the neighbors.
C. To explain the message in the box. D. To introduce Mr. Lee’s fixing skills.
34. What did the box finally bring to the neighbors?
A. A habit of sharing stories. B. A lesson to build friendship.
C. Honesty in the community. D. Love among the neighbors.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Quiet Apartment Building B. The Magic Gift Box
C. Help from Neighbors D. True Stories in the Lobby

You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? Li Xing, a math professor at Ningxia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with what he said.
Numbers are beautiful!
There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure the length from your head to your belly button and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote,
“My skiff (小船) has left ten thousand mountains far away”,
“A thousand miles in one day”,
—all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt.
Curves (曲线) are beautiful!
“Sine curves” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. Tangent curve is like a waterfall, just as Li Bai wrote, “dashing (猛冲) down three thousand feet from on high”.
Formulas (公式) are beautiful!
There are some amazing formulas. In a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. How amazing! Just as Chinese-American mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern said, Math is fun!
36. What does the writer think about math?
A. He thinks math is difficult and boring. B. He thinks math is beautiful and fun.
C. He thinks math is only useful for scientists. D. He thinks math is not important.
37. If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618, ________.
A. it has a golden color B. it only happens in human bodies
C. it looks like a human body D. it might bring people a sense of beauty
38. Why does the writer mention Li Bai and his poems in the passage?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To support his opinion.
C. To share the beauty of Li Bai’s poems. D. To offer advice on learning math.
39. What does a “tangent curve” look like?
A. B. C. D.
40. What amazing formula is mentioned in the passage about right-angled triangles?
A. B. C. D.
D
Heat Domes: Invisible Traps of Extreme Heat
Have you ever wondered why some areas experience unusually high temperatures for several days or even weeks? One possible reason is a weather phenomenon called a heat dome. A heat dome occurs when a large area of high pressure remains over a region for an extended period of time. Like an invisible cover above the Earth, it prevents hot air from escaping and causes temperatures near the ground to rise quickly.
The Effects of a Heat Dome
A heat dome can bring scorching heat and extremely dry conditions. During such events, temperatures may climb above 40℃,creating dangerous conditions for people, animals, and plants. Unlike ordinary hot days, heat domes often continue through the night. As a result, the human body has less time to recover from the heat, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Why Are Heat Domes Becoming More Common?
Scientists suggest that climate change may be one important factor behind the increasing frequency of heat domes. Rising global temperatures can influence ocean conditions and atmospheric patterns, making extreme weather events more likely to occur. However, researchers are still studying the relationship between climate change and heat domes.
Protecting Ourselves from Extreme Heat
When a heat dome arrives, people should take precautions to protect their health. Drinking enough water, staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day, and avoiding intense physical activities are effective ways to reduce the danger. In some cases, visiting air-conditioned public places can also help people stay safe.
Heat domes remind us that weather systems can have a powerful impact on our daily lives. By learning about these events, we can better prepare for future challenges and protect both ourselves and the environment.
41. Why does the writer compare a heat dome to an “invisible cover”?
A. Because it blocks sunlight completely. B. Because it keeps hot air from moving away.
C. Because it creates clouds above the Earth. D. Because it prevents rain from falling.
42. What does the underlined word “phenomenon” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. A natural event that can be observed. B. A machine used to measure weather.
C. A problem caused only by humans. D. A change that happens every day.
43. According to the passage, why are heat domes dangerous at night?
A. Because temperatures suddenly drop and cause illness.
B. Because people usually exercise outdoors at night.
C. Because the body cannot easily cool down.
D. Because strong winds make the weather worse.
44. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Heat domes are becoming a serious weather problem around the world.
B. Climate change may influence the development of heat domes.
C. Scientists have completely explained heat domes.
D. Researchers believe extreme weather will disappear soon.
45. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How Humans Can Control the Weather
B. The History of Climate Change
C. Heat Domes: Causes, Effects, and Safety Tips
D. Different Types of Weather Around the World

第三节 (共5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)
根据短文内容回答问题。
Project-based learning (项目化学习) is learning while doing. It gives learners the chance to get a deeper understanding of a topic. During the learning, learners solve problems by using real world examples and challenges. Project-based learning is becoming widely used in schools. Students work on a project over a period of time from a week to a term. At the end of the project, they show their knowledge and skills by creating a product for people. Let’s take the example of Sandra.
Sandra is an eleven-year-old student in Sunshine Primary School. She wanted to know more about Greek mythology (希腊神话). Well, how did she make it?
◆She chose Greek mythology characters as the topic because she was interested in the characters and their stories.
◆Step 1
Choose a topic
◆She had to learn about that topic and do some research on it. To collect information, she read books and articles about the history of Greek mythology. She also read some novels like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. She watched videos and played games all connected with Greek mythology. When she collected her information, she was ready to create a project.
◆Step 2
Do the research
◆She created a project based on her talents and skills. She loves to build with Legos (乐高), so she decided to build Lego creations based on the stories of Greek mythology characters. She’s also really good at art, so she created a book about her favorite characters. In her book, she drew pictures of them and wrote the stories in her own words.
◆Step 3
________
◆After all of that work, she made a living room presentation for Mom and Dad and shared the two products that she had created. Then she shared her project online with friends, and even shared her project on social media.
◆Step 4
Do the presentation
From the example of Sandra, we can see that project-based learning allows a student to learn about a topic and then create a project based on his or her talents and skills. Not everyone is a great test taker, but everyone is good at something. Through project work, students cannot only learn deeply about a topic, but also have fun learning. So if you’re interested in something, why not start with project-based learning?

Great changes have taken place in my hometown.
People used to wear simple black or blue clothes, but now they have clothes in different styles and bright colours. They ate porridge and vegetables in the past while they can enjoy all kinds of fruits and meat now. People lived in small old houses before. Now they live in bigger and more comfortable homes. People went out on foot or by bike. Now many families have their own cars.
I hope my hometown will become more beautiful in the future.
