room, feeting tired. He had started working at seven in the
morning and it was eight in the evening now.He had to
prepare his tessons for the foltowing day. This is a tupicat day
for Zhang Tian.Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been
quite an experience for him.
2Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's
certificate tast uear. His parents, like most, hoped he would go
to a big city to find a teaching job.Likewise, his friends att teft
his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing.Zhang Tian felt
differenttu, however. He wanted to start a new lifestule. He had
met wonderfut teachers from smatl vitlages during his early
schoot uears and he was inspired by them to go and teach
where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for
and became a volunteer teacher in a vitlage school bringing
with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers.
Zhang Tian travelted to the viltage with an eager heart. He
imagined alt sorts of exciting things about living independently
4
and teaching in a vittage
3However,not everuthing tived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The
schoot was much smalter than he had expected.with onlu
three classrooms. In front of the ctassrooms, there was a
ptayground which got dusty on windy daus and muddy on
rainy daus.Living in the vittage was also more chatlenging
than he had thought. The power and water suppties were
unstabte,so he could ontu shower every three or four daus, and
he had to tearn how to cook. The thought of leaving once
flashed through his mind, but he quickly gave up on the idea
and found waus to deal with the challenges.
4The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the
onty Engtish teacher. The other two tocal teachers were
responsibte for maths and Chinese. To make schoot life
healthier and livelier for his students,Zhang Tian introduced
more subiects to the schoot-music,art and PE.It is not
surprising that PE is the kids'favourite subiect!Their schoot
6

Unit2 Lesson1 The Underdoa
Part1
Paul and Iwere on our school basketbatl team. The Lions.
We toved basketball and were both huge fans of the NBA.
When we weren't plauing on the court which was next to our
building,we were watching a game on TV.My favourite player
was Lebron James.Paul's favourite player was Tyrone Boques,
a guy who played for the Charlotte Hornets, although we
actuatly agree that they are both champions.
2Boques was onty 1.6 metres talt which made him the
shortest player ever in the NBA.Guess what?Paul was only
1.6 metres tatl too!Paul knew that beina shorter than other
players meant that he had to practise more.During all those
1
hours of doing iump shots on his own,he used Boques as his
inspiration.Paut once said."If Boques could make it,whu not
me?"
3Our coach was not so sure.Paul had to try out manu times
iust for making the team.He was still usualty on the bench.
being just a replacement, which was realty tough on him.
Everyone knew Paut had real skilts, and was someone who
worked really hard and had a strong desire to plau for the
team.However,Paut didn't get a chance.
4 This week. The Lions were playing our main competitors,The
Bears,a team whose record this season had been perfect. They
hadn't tost a single game.It woutd be a tough one.Paut didn't
know he'd soon get the chance that he'd been waiting for.
Part2
DSuddenlu,a plauer and I crashed into each other.Pain raced
through my bodu.My knee hurt badly. The team gathered
around, looking worried. The tast quarter was about to begin,
8
and my team was behind bu 10 points.
2)"I don't think t can ptay anymore, coach,"t said quietty as
the doctor put an ice pack on mu knee.
③“owag"the coach reptied sharpty“e'e got no more
ptayers!"
4)"What about Paut?"someone suagested
5“Paut2”said the coach.“He can't plau!"
6)"Give him a shot.coach!"I said."What have we aot to lose?"
7)"That's right,another plauer said."We re losing anuwau.Let
Paut plaut"
8)"Let me tru,coach!I won't tet you down!"Paul said
⑨)“OK OK!"the coach finaltu agreed“Don't tet us down,PaUl
It's uour time to shine."
10Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court. And ctearty, alt
the extra hours that he'd spent practising alone paid off.The
other team just couldn't keep up with his energy and speed. He
made shot after shot, and the crowd coutdn't stop ctapping
9
and cheering
When the game ended, our team had won by two points.
f2“/etL”-said the coach as he hit Paut on the shoulder.“ou've
just earned your place on the team, big quy.

Hi Jeremu
1)Thanks for uour question. As peopte often say,any exercise
is better than none, but long-distance running in particular has
a lot of benefits
2It is a great sport for beginners-you do not need a gum
10
membership or any special equipment.Just a pair of good
running shoes will do.Then, keep it up.There is atso no better
way to know yoursetf and to see what you are capabte of.
3You are atso somebody who worries about getting sick
Running wilt help you get fit and prevent diseases. It wilt aive
you good upper and lower body strength.Like any exercise.
running increases the ftow of blood and oxygen to your brain.
It makes your heart stronger and altows more blood to flow
around your bodu.It atso strengthens uour immune sustem
and reduces the risk of serious heatth problems,as wetl as
more common iltnesses tike colds.Besides, anubodu who is
feeling down can go for a run to cheer themselves up.Even a
thirty-minute run wilt provide retief from aches or tension that
you may be suffering due to stress.
4If uou are new to running, here is some advice for you-it is
important to warm up and coot down properly before and after
running,so you do not hurt yoursetf.A warm-up gets your
11
btood flowing and prepares your body before you exercise.
After a tong run,you should jog stowty for ten minutes, then
watk for five minutes.Such kind of warm-down retaxes uour
body after exercise

Three Principles of Running
DDo the right amount.Draw up a training ptan that is right
for you. There are no shortcuts-no one can become a
long-distance runner overnight!Set achievable goats.For
example, jogging for only twenty minutes to start with.Make
sure you are running the right amount that uour heart.
musctes and bones can take without getting hurt.
2 Keep running.Running trains your mind as welt as your
12
bodu. There witl be times when you want to give up.But hang
in there and tell yourself that it will get easier with time.
Nothing aives one more satisfaction than realising that alt the
sweat and hard work were worth it in the end
3)Don't overdo it.Do not forget to take breaks.Training too
much can be bad for uour health.so make sure uou do not
overdo it
Unit3 Lesson1 Sprina Festivat
Notes from the editor:Spring Festival is an important tradition
in China. It has unique meanings. However, peopte may
understand it differenttu, including those from other cultures.
Here are three readers'accounts to our magazine, who shared
their experiences and views about it
Tom Jenkins,a 16-uear-old exchange student tiving in Naniing
DIt was my first time spending Spring Festivat in China with
13
mu host family.spring festival is highlu valued bu everu
Chinese familu.Preparations began a week before the festival
First, the house was cleaned from top to bottom.Mu host
mother Mrs chen said this was to sweep awau the dirt of the
past year and get ready for the new uear.
2Next.the Chinese character Fu was attached upside down to
our front door.It is believed that when Fu is put upside down,
happiness arrives. The character looked reallu cool
3)The greatest excitement began the night before Spring
Festivat Fireworks were being let off across the city, suddenty
lighting up the night sku.Children were covering their ears but
with an expectant look on their faces.Mrs Chen said that it
was to scare away the monster Nian. The fireworks were a lot
of fun!We then sat together to enjou a bia dinner, wishing
everyone a happy new year
Xu Gang,a 28-gear-otd computer engineer working in
14
Shanghai
11 usualty start planning my trip home to Shanxi weeks
before Spring Festivat as train tickets or fliahts have to be
booked as early as possible.I take great care in choosing qifts
for my parents. This uear,I bought a bottle of wine for my
father and a beautiful sweater for my mother.
2Every year, the moment I get on the train,I am surrounded
bu Shanxi accents-1 know that t am headina home to mu
familu.I don't get to travel back to Shanxi very often,so when 1
get home,my parents wilt fill me in on what's been
happening-who has aot married or had children or gone
away to universitu. It's great to hear what everuone's been up
to
3We usually have hotpot-it's so tastu! However, what we eat
isn't the most important thing. What's important is who we eat
it with. It's a wonderful thing to be back together with mu
family and talk of old times. When Iwas a kid,Spring Festival
15
was alt about firecrackers, sweets and decorations. As I get
older, coming home and being with mu entire famity is the
most important part o
Li Yan,a 70-uear-old arandmother from Heitongiiana
1Spring Festivat is famity time for us.My husband and l are
both retired. We do not see our children and arandchildren
very often and we miss them a lot.Weeks before Sprina
Festivat we start getting ready for their homecoming.Things
start to get reatly busu.We think about what the children
would like to eat, what we need to buy and what dishes need
to be prepared
2Our house buzzes with activities when everuone comes
home. Our grandchildren run around shouting and playing,
and the adults gather around the table to talk about the past
year.Great fun is also enjoued in the kitchen as jigozi are being
made.We atwaus have iiaozi during this time,as they mean
16
something speciat on this occasion-they are a sian of our
wishes for heatth and happiness in the coming uear.To me.
this is Spring Festivat--the joy of a family gathering
Throughout history, some of the original customs have
changed, but the spirit of the festivat--the spirit of family-has
largelu been kept. Most of the important spring Festivat
traditions are stilt being practised by people across the
countru
Unit3 Lesson3 Memories of Christmas
1)1 stitl remember the last Christmas Grannu spent with us.It
began in the middle of November on a cold, windu dau.t
remember the wind because Granny's grey hair was a mess
when she arrived. That was also the day Granny moved in.
Somehow,at the time.I didn't know she was sick.Maube l was
too young, maube she hid it too well or maube l was just too
excited that Christmas was on the wau
17
2After Grannu moved in,she spent most of her time on the
brown sofa by the fire.Sometimes she was quiet, but she
seemed happu. When I wrote a tetter to Father Christmas
telling him about the presents 1 wanted,Granny made an effort
to help me.Her hand was stightly shaku, but she wrote "Father
Christmas, the North Pole on the envelope.
3)In December,our excitement grew each day-lights
appeared in the streets.Christmas cards arrived, and there was
snow everywhere.Granny and I made sugar biscuits,stuffed
the turkey and then sat on my granny's lap and we sang
Christmas songs. My favourite song was Frosty the Snowman
and I toved the bit that went "Thumpetu-thump-thump
thumpety-thump-thump,look at Frosty go!"Granny had
patience to sing it over and over again.
4On Christmas Eve,Granny took a seat by the fire as we put
up the Christmas tree.I hung most of the decorations on the
branches
18
(5)"That's the most beautiful tree I've ever seen,Granny said.
6Then she started singing,"Oh,Christmas tree,oh,Christmas
tree, you fitl mu heart with music...
7Before bed.Granny and I left a plate of sugar biscuits out for
Father Christmas, and put a stocking at the end of mu bed.1
remember Granny sitting on mu bed and singing softty untitI
fetl asleep.
8My stocking was fult of small tous and sweets on Christmas
morning, and there were presents under the tree.was on my
best behaviour as we opened the presents.Later,Grannu called
me over
9"|have something speciat for you,"Granny whispered.It's
for alt your treasures.Merry Christmas.
10It was a music box with a batlet dancer inside.
After breakfast,Auntie Kath and my cousin David arrived.
While Mum,Dad and Auntie Kath got tunch ready,David and t
ptayed outside. We raced around the garden and rolted a big
19
snowbatt to make a tovetu snowman.Grannu staued inside bu
the fire.I remember catching her eue through the window.
12"Come outside,Granny,"t catled,but she just waved.
13Lunch was late, but it was a toud and exciting affair. We put
on sitty paper hats and had a big turkey with potatoes,
followed by Christmas puddina.David put so much pudding in
his mouth that he coutdn't swaltow.
14"How's the pudding?"Granny asked
15"Mmmph,mmmph,mmmph,"said David.
16Auntie Kath didn't think it was funny, but the rest of us did.
Granny laughed so much that her paper hat fetl off.
1A few weeks after that Christmas,Granny passed away.I
think of her often though, especiatly at Christmas. Each year,t
take out the music box she gave me.Inside I keep Grannu's
paper hat and the tetter she helped me write that Christmas.
Mum gave the tetter back to me some years ago when I no
onger betieved in Father Christmas. When t think about what
20
makes Christmas so magicat it's not just aifts and Father
Christmas that come to mind. It's atso mu memory of Granny.
NowI'm the one who makes sugar biscuits each uear, and I
atwaus make one in a g-shape-G for Grannu
