Last spring, our biology class visited a seed bank outside Kunming.I expected a
museum. What I found was more like a very cold library
The building has no windows in the storage area.Inside, the temperature is about
minus eighteen degrees, and the air is dry.Our teacher told us that under these
conditions, some seeds can stay alive for hundreds of years.
A worker showed us how the seeds are kept.First, each seed is dried and cleaned.
Then it is weighed and photographed, and the information is put into a computer.
Finally, the seeds are sealed in a glass bottle and put on a shelf. There are more than
eighty thousand kinds of seeds here, and each of them has its own number.
"Why do you keep so many?"a classmate asked. The worker gave an example.
In the 1970s,a serious disease destroyed most of the rice in one part of Asia.
Scientists found a kind of wild rice that was not affected-and that plant had been
kept in a seed bank. They used it to develop a new kind of rice, and millions of
people had food again.
I asked whether the seed bank made money. The worker laughed."We lose
money,"she said."Seeds do not pay.But if we do not keep them, nobody can pay for
what we lose."
On the bus back to school, our teacher asked us to write one sentence about the
visit.I wrote:"A seed bank is a library, but the books are the future."

28.Why did the worker mention the rice disease of the 1970s?
A.To show how a stored seed can save lives
B.To show that seed banks cost a lot of money
C.To show that farmers often make mistakes.
D.To show that wild rice tastes better than other rice.
29.What does the worker mean by "We lose money'?
A.The seeds are very cheap to buy.
B.Nobody wants to buy seeds any more.

第四部分书面表达(共一节,满分25分)
Changes in My Life
Great changes have taken place in my life since I was in junior high school
I used to ride my bike to school, but now I take the subway because my school is
much farther from home.
My study habits have changed too.I used to be shy and afraid to ask questions in
class. Now,I am more confident and often join group discussions with my friends.
It's amazing how much we can learn from each other.
The environment is also different. In the past, roads were narrow and there were
few cars. Now everything is changing.Tall buildings stand everywhere and roads are
wide and clean.
Lots of things in my life have changed, but one thing stays the same:the warm
love from my family. They always encourage me and make me feel safe and happy.
