Life can be challenging, particularly for people with autism (自闭症). It is a disorder that does not have one single cause and can take many forms. Most often, it creates difficulty in communicating and interacting with others. Severe autism may leave someone unable to speak entirely or function without assistance. But many people with autism have led rewarding or even outstanding lives. One such person is Haley Moss.
As a three-year-old, Haley was able to do difficult tasks such as finishing large puzzles. However, she couldn’t say simple words like “Mommy.” The concerned parents took her to a doctor. After careful examination, the doctors diagnosed (诊断) her as having autism. At the time, the family was given some extremely negative news. “My parents were told that I would be lucky to have friends or even hold a minimum wage job,” Haley said. Yet, by getting professional help, Haley was able to join regular school classes at four. She did quite well at school, although with her poor social skills, it was hard for her to make friends.
Eventually, Haley became so successful that she made history. After graduating from the University of Miami, she got hired by a law firm and became the first autistic lawyer in Florida. Being a lawyer wasn’t her first choice of career, though. Previous to going to law school, she studied psychology (心理学) and considered becoming a psychologist to help others with autism. However, Haley discovered she didn’t enjoy the science classes, so she decided that becoming a lawyer would fit her interests better. In addition to being a legal professional, Haley has also published books and has a talent for painting. Most definitely, Haley has far exceeded those original low expectations of her and proven the experts wrong. In short, she has become a role model for others with autism.
4. What can be inferred about autism according to paragraph 1?
A. It affects people in different ways. B. It leads to the loss of speech function.
C. It is a disorder that can be easily cured. D. It prevents people from leading successful lives.
5. What negative prediction did Haley’s parents receive from the doctor?
A. Haley would never learn to speak. B. Haley would struggle with puzzles.
C. Haley would fail to graduate from school. D. Haley might not have friends or hold a basic job.
6. Why did Haley choose to become a lawyer instead of a psychologist?
A. She thought psychology too difficult to learn.
B. She hoped to become the first autistic lawyer.
C. She wanted to help people with autism as a lawyer.
D. She realized entering the field of law better suited her interests.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Career in Law: The Journey of Haley Moss.
B. Overcoming Challenges: The Story of Autism.
C. Understanding Autism: Causes and Challenges.
D. Haley Moss: Overcoming Autism and Making History.

Hybrid vehicles (混合动力汽车), also known as hybrid electric cars (HECs), are automobiles powered by two or more energy sources. Compared with most ordinary cars on the present-day roads, they have several unique features. The biggest distinction is that HECs rely on both petrol and electricity for operation. A hybrid car is fitted with both a battery-driven motor and a petrol-powered engine.
Producing a hybrid vehicle costs slightly more than a standard car, even with a smaller engine. The higher price results from the engine structure with more parts. It has special machine parts that support its two power operation mode of petrol and electricity. Besides, it is equipped with a computer system different from that of traditional cars. Although it costs more to buy, it runs more cheaply than petrol-only vehicles. When a hybrid car stops at traffic lights or travels at a speed under 15 miles per hour, its special computer makes it run only on electric power. Once the computer detects the car needs extra power, it will restart the petrol engine. The computer keeps judging in real time whether the car should use electricity, petrol, or a mix of both.
Since electric power assists its operation, a hybrid car consumes far less fuel (燃料) than most vehicles. In fact, it is among the most fuel-efficient cars available now. On average, it can travel 50 to 60 miles per gallon of petrol. Such high fuel efficiency cuts drivers’ costs and helps save limited oil resources. Hybrid cars are also environmentally friendly in other ways. For example, they produce no harmful polluting gases when running on electricity.
Despite these differences from regular cars, hybrid vehicles deliver the same driving experience. They share the same control methods for speeding up and slowing down. However, HECs are generally smaller in size than petrol cars. Their smooth, aerodynamic (空气动力学的) body improves fuel efficiency, yet it fails to increase the inner space of the car.
8. Which of the following best describes the features of a hybrid car?
A. Safe and reliable. B. Costly but long-lasting.
C. High price, low pollution. D. Small engine with stronger power.
9. What controls the switch between petrol and electric power in a hybrid car?
A. The engine. B. The battery. C. The driver. D. The computer.
10. What is the main purpose of inventing hybrid cars?
A. To save energy resources. B. To improve driving services.
C. To cut down the cost of buying a car. D. To create a new driving experience.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To persuade readers to buy hybrid cars.
B. To explain what makes hybrid cars special.
C. To compare hybrid cars with petrol cars in price.
D. To argue that hybrid cars will replace ordinary cars.

A research team from AMOLF in Amsterdam has created a soft robot that walks, jumps, and swims — all without a brain, electronics, or AI. As described in the study published in Science, it has no computer, no software, and no sensors. And still, it moves with surprising autonomy and speed, simply because of its body and how it interacts with the world.
So, what’s really driving it? Underneath the movement is a principle you’ve probably seen, though you might have overlooked. Think of those shaky, air-filled tube dancers swinging freely around in front of gas stations. The same physics that makes them move could hold the key to the next generation of autonomous robots.
Powered by a continuous stream of air alone, each of the robot’s soft, tubular legs begins to swing. On its own, each leg waves around randomly. But when many are coupled together, their motions quickly synchronize. “Suddenly, order emerges from chaos,” says the first author Alberto Comoretto. “No controllers, no programming. Complex collective motions arise just from simple interactions.” Even more surprising, the synchronization adapts. If the robot runs into an obstacle, it adjusts itself. When it moves from land to water, it quickly shifts to freestyle swimming. All the movement emerges from the tight coupling between body and environment.
The research challenges the conventional idea that robots need complicated control systems to realize lifelike behavior. “Simple objects, like tubes, can give rise to complex and functional behavior, provided we understand how to take advantage of the underlying physics,” says principal investigator Bas Overvelde. “There is no brain, no computer. Essentially, it’s a machine. But when properly designed, it can outperform many robotic systems and behave like an artificial creature.”
Possible future applications range from smart pills to space technology: safe microrobots that can be swallowed and release drugs after autonomously reaching the target tissue, robotic wearable suits matching the walking steps without processors, reducing power consumption while enhancing human strength. More broadly, these examples illustrate how this research opens doors to mechanical systems that behave as if they had a computer, without actually needing one.
12. Why does the author mention tube dancers in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the wide use of robots. B. To introduce a daily application.
C. To show the need for observation. D. To explain the working principle.
13. What does the underlined word “synchronize” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Slow down. B. Match up.
C. Change direction. D. Consume energy.
14. What enables the soft robot to adjust itself?
A. Its ability to get over obstacles. B. Its connection with a computer.
C. Its interaction with the environment. D. Its reliable performance underwater.
15. What should robots be like according to Bas Overvelde?
A. Physics-based. B. Cost-effective.
C. Function-focused. D. Environmentally-friendly.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Wendy grew up in a small and remote village in Wyoming, America. Her world was one of wild mountains and endless fields, but she had a strong passion for sports, especially long running. Wendy always dreamt to be an Olympic marathon runner. Yet poverty was her biggest hurdle. Her first “running shoes” were worn-out sneakers (胶鞋). She trained alone, on rough, unpaved paths, with no coach to guide her. Her only pacemaker was the rhythm of her own breath, and her only training plan was to run farther each day than the last. People shook their heads, dismissing her ambition as a naive fantasy. “How could a girl like her, with nothing, ever compete with the professionally trained athletes from the cities?”
Yet, Wendy’s resolve only hardened. Witnessing her talents and painstaking practice, her parents, though poor, supported her in their own silent ways — a hearty meal after a long run, a pat on the back, and the precious savings they gathered together to buy her a single pair of proper running shoes. When she finally saved enough for the entry fee to a city marathon, it felt like a miracle.
The big day did come. Wendy and her parents arrived at the spot with uncontrollable excitement. There were seas of people — volunteers, news reporters and well-equipped athletes. Wendy wanted to perform well to prove that determination could overcome any obstacle. It was super-hot that day, but Wendy managed to come to the last 400 meters Behind her lay 41 kilometers and 795 meters of Los Angeles asphalt (沥青), but every step forward cost more than the last ten kilometers combined. She had missed the last water station — the cup had slipped through her trembling fingers. The heat had grown teeth, chewing the strength from her legs, and clouded her mind. Suddenly, darkness flashed across her eyes, she lost her balance and crashed to the ground.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At this time, two orange-shirted medical volunteers jogged toward her.

D
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

【答案】
Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning
From my perspective, I will always prioritize traditional classroom learning as my main choice, with online courses serving as a useful supplement. While online learning offers flexible schedules and massive open resources that we can access anytime, the traditional classroom provides immediate face-to-face interaction with teachers, where we can discuss confusing points freely and get instant targeted feedback. It is the warm, focused atmosphere and real-time peer cooperation in class that help us build deeper, long-lasting understanding and form precious, lasting friendships.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 At this time, two orange-shirted medical volunteers jogged toward her. Seeing the red crosses on their shirts, Wendy lifted her arm in refusal, “No help. Not yet.” The volunteers then withdrew halfway, as if there were a cliff they might accidentally push her over. With painstaking efforts, Wendy struggled to her feet, swaying unsteadily. Other runners sprinting past for place and pride, she managed to move at her own rhythm. In the chaotic stands, her parents, knowing their daughter’s determination, just prayed silently. Wendy trudged on, each footfall like a stitch sewing the dream to reality. The crowd blurred, but the finish line grew clearer —200, 100, and 50 meters.
Finally, the finish line was just 10 meters away. With her breath coming in sobs, she made a desperate push and crossed the line at 2:48:42. Though twenty minutes slower than her training runs, it was a timeless proof that dreams can outrun poverty. Medical teams swarmed, providing oxygen and water. When interviewed later, Wendy smiled through cracked lips. “I didn’t just fight for myself, but for every dreamer who starts with nothing but worn-out shoes and determination.” The next year, she did stand at the start line of the Olympics — no longer defined by poverty, but by limitless possibility — waiting for the gun previously inaccessible to the underprivileged.
