Come and share your favorite Chinese idioms!
Playing the lute to a cow
A famous musician once played the most beautiful music for a cow, only to find it paid no attention to him and kept eating grass like nothing happened.
Origin: Lun Heng (Eastern Han Dynasty)
What I learned: Stop wasting energy explaining yourself to people who just won’t get it. Now I think twice and save my words for the right people to talk to.
A frog at the bottom of a well
Imagine a frog that lives its whole life in a well. It thinks the sky is only as big as the round hole above its home. It has no idea there is a huge, wide world outside.
Origin: Zhuangzi (Warring States Period)
What I learned: This describes someone who only has a very narrow way of seeing things. It reminds us to keep learning new things, and never lock ourselves in our own small “well” of what we already know.
Some people had a competition to draw a snake. The fastest man finished first, but he decided to add feet to his snake. “Snakes don’t have feet!” others laughed, and he lost the game in the end.
Origin: Strategies of the Warring States (Western Han Dynasty)

It was a breath-taking moment to see Zhang Shupeng fly a wingsuit (翼装) through Tianmen Cave in Zhangjiajie. But for him, that was just another day of training. “I’ve done this jump more than 1,800 times,” he says, “It’s not about being brave. It’s about being ready.”
The training takes place on Tianmen Mountain. Zhang jumps from high cliffs, wearing a special suit that turns his body into a flying wing. “The first few seconds are the most important,” he says. “You fall faster than a car on a highway at a speed of around 200km/h. But you have to stay really focused.” He explains that even a small movement can change his direction completely. Zhang calls himself a perfectionist. “Safety is in my own hands. I don’t leave it to luck.”
Before wingsuit flying, Zhang was a paragliding athlete. In 2009, he set a world record. After that, he turned to one of the most dangerous sports in the sky. “I grew up in Inner Mongolia,” he says. “As a child, I always dreamed of flying freely like an eagle. That dream never left me.”
He doesn’t see his flights as performances for others. “I want to see how far I can push myself,” he says.
Flying through the mountains and even through the famous cave tests his skill to the limit (极限). After the fast fall, Zhang opens his parachute (降落伞) and lands safely. “This sport is not about showing off,” he says. “It’s about finding freedom in the sky.” When he reaches one goal, he looks for the next. “Maybe I’ll try a new sky sport,” he says. “I don’t fly for records. I fly for myself.”

Victor Dewulf, 25, from Belgium and Peter Hedley, 27, from the UK, came up with a smart invention called Recycleye, which has made a big hit in the world of recycling. Their invention has won them a top award for young inventors in Europe because it can sort waste well using AI. It does a much better job than methods in the past.
Their invention uses a smart system that can sort waste. Recycleye uses a treadmill (循环输送带,形似跑步机跑带) and a camera to tell apart different types of waste. A robotic arm can then pick out any valuable material. “Our system can run on the fastest belts (传送带) within a waste plant while others can’t do this,” Hedley told the media. “It helps us get to about a 300 percent performance increase.”
Recycleye can even tell apart different types of plastics, like those that are safe to be used for food and those that aren’t. ________. Now, with Recycleye, recycling has become much more efficient, reducing the production and use of carbon-intensive (碳密集的) materials.
The seed for this life-changing invention was planted while Dewulf and Hedley were doing their master’s studies at Imperial College London. They deeply explored the possibility of using computers to help sort waste, which inspired them to improve the recycling industry. Dewulf’s research paper on waste management caught a lot of attention from the industry, encouraging him to explore further.
Their robots work all the time, every day of the year. Before this, sorting waste was mostly done by people, who were slower and sometimes made mistakes. These robots get past those problems, working 24 hours a day. This change not only makes sorting waste easier but also helps our planet become cleaner and greener.
36. Why did Dewulf and Hedley win a top award?
A. Because they made a smart invention.
B. Because they changed the world of recycling.
C. Because they performed well in college studies.
D. Because they are the youngest inventors in the world.
37. What might the Recycleye look like?
A. B. C. D.
38. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. The smart system can run faster than others
B. It used to be a difficult part of the sorting process
C. So people needn’t sort waste by themselves anymore
D. This inspires Dewulf and Hedley to go further in sorting waste
39. What does the underlined phrase “get past” mean?
A. get over B. look for C. go through D. get across
40. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To inspire people to work in the recycling industry.
B. To introduce a smart system for waste sorting.
C. To call on young people to work more efficiently.
D. To encourage the youth to develop creative thinking.

31. Why does Zhang Shupeng practise so many times?
A. To record the speed. B. To break a record.
C. To get well-prepared. D. To practise his courage.
32. The underlined word “perfectionist” most likely means “someone who ________”.
A. is careful and focused B. flies faster than others
C. explains things carefully D. takes luck in his own hands
33. Where does his dream start from?
A. His hometown. B. Paragliding. C. His early training. D. A world record.
34. What does Zhang Shupeng see sky sport as?
A. A performance for others. B. A way to make a living.
C. A dangerous sport he regrets. D. A challenge and freedom.
35. Which would be the BEST title for this article?
A. How to Jump from a Cliff B. Flying for Myself
C. Dangerous Sports in the Sky D. Zhang’s World Record

原文第一段“‘I’ve done this jump more than 1,800 times,’ he says, ‘It’s not about being brave. It’s about being ready.’”
I don’t leave it to luck.”
原文第三段“I grew up in Inner Mongolia,”及“As a child, I always dreamed of flying freely like an eagle. That dream never left me.”
文章结尾点题“I don’t fly for records.

36. A 37. C 38. B 39. A 40. B

The Person I Admire Most
The Person I Admire Most is my neighbor, Mr. Li. He is an old man, but he looks very healthy and happy.
For many years, Mr. Li has done a simple but great thing. Every morning, he gets up early to clean the streets in our neighborhood. He sweeps the leaves. He does this every day. He never asks for money or help. I admire him because he is very hardworking. He makes our living environment clean.
From him, I learn that we should do small things to help others. If everyone does a little bit, our world will become much better. I want to be a person like him.

开头段:直接点出自己最敬佩的人是邻居,清晰交代人物身份;
主体段:介绍他多年来始终坚持的举动,说明自己敬佩他的核心原因;
