A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and planned to be a neurosurgeon (神经外科医生).
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successful return to university, Merrill said her family had helped her a lot. “When I was accepted by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they willingly made these moves. I really appreciate that.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a field with far more men than women, and only 5% of neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, even great pressure will not make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”
24. Why does Merrill mention their house moving?
A. To stress the support of her family.
B. To show her determination to be a doctor.
C. To reflect difficulties in attending college.
D. To describe the process of pursuing her dream.
25. What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Comfort. B. Development. C. Choice. D. Inspiration.
26. What do Halyard’s words in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Merrill can make it in the residency. B. Merrill will have more stress to handle.
C. Being a mom ensures Merrill a better doctor. D. Staying focused and sensible is key to success.
27. What does Merrill mainly suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Handling several goals at once. B. Being true to your passion.
C. Choosing a family-friendly career. D. Having the courage to dream big.

Teenagers’ fitness is now an important concern, and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers. First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play badminton or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories (卡路里). Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching (拉伸) exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive (高强度) exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These activities are really important in order to stop injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be organized in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.
28. Why should teenagers first know their fitness level?
A. To compare themselves with others. B. To find out their body weight.
C. To decide which sport is easier. D. To choose a suitable exercise plan.
29. Why does Dr. Lopez divide teenagers into three groups?
A. To show their different sports interests.
B. To explain their different exercise needs.
C. To compare their daily school activities.
D. To find the cause of their weight problems.
30. What principle can be found in Dr. Lopez’s exercise plans?
A. More exercise is always better.
B. Stronger bodies can take more exercise.
C. Weight training works for every teenager.
D. Walking is the best way to improve fitness.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Build a Stronger Body B. Popular Sports Among Teenagers
C. Exercise Plans for Different Fitness Levels D. Fitness Problems Among Teenagers
D
AI is becoming increasingly popular in society. A recent report from Common Sense Media shows that while young people know the possible uses of AI tools, they may not fully understand the hidden dangers. So it is important for parents to talk with their teens about AI.
Today teens use AI most often for homework (53%). They also use it to help with school tasks, and 46% of them report doing so without the teacher’s permission (许可). What’s more, they use it to fight boredom (42%) and to translate something from one language into another (41%). They may even use AI to create a joke, plan activities, and get health advice.
“It’s important to find out how exactly AI is helping teens,” says Arman Jaffer, an AI education expert. “One thing educators and parents have noticed is that AI can best support learning when it focuses on the learning process (过程), not the result. Rather than asking ChatGPT for an answer or to write a complete paper, it can work better if it’s used to provide ideas, give suggestions, or help with study.”
“As AI is being applied more widely in the classroom, it is very important to make sure students are being properly educated on AI, so they are ready for a world where AI is in everything they do,” says Leticia Barr, a computer science teacher. “Knowing how AI is present in their lives, the way it works, and how to best use AI tools to support learning is more important than stopping it.”
The best thing parents can do is check in with their children — be the ones who actively take part in the learning process. They may never be able to keep up with computer programmers or rapid advances in AI, but they can play an important role in their children’s learning and support the difficult work teachers do every day.
32. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A. Boredom is common among teens.
B. Students use AI for different purposes.
C. Homework is too difficult for teens to deal with.
D. Teachers should pay more attention to students’ needs.
33. How does Jaffer think AI can best support learning?
A. By finishing schoolwork for students.
B. By giving students the final answer.
C. By helping students through the learning process.
D. By checking whether their answers are correct.
34. What does Barr suggest schools should do about AI?
A. Keep AI away from classroom learning.
B. Use AI to take the place of classroom teaching.
C. Let students freely choose their AI tools.
D. Teach students how to use AI properly.
35. What does the last paragraph imply about parents?
A. Their support still matters even without expert AI knowledge.
B. Their main task is to follow the newest changes in technology.
C. They need to know more about AI than their children.
D. They should leave AI education completely to teachers.

How to Pick High School Classes
Many high school students want to know what courses to take to improve their chances for admission to highly competitive colleges. 36 Here is some advice to help you when you make these decisions.
37 Students should take some harder classes. But they should balance their schedule with easier classes, too. Students can talk with their teachers about what courses will offer the appropriate challenge.
Don’t take classes for the wrong reasons. Students shouldn’t take a class just because their best friend is taking it or it’s a course they think they need to get into college. Students should focus on their strengths and make sure they have time to devote to studying. Parents shouldn’t set unrealistic expectations either. 38
Do consider future plans when choosing high school classes. Students should first think through their career plans and whether they want to go to a four-year college, or go straight to work after graduation. 39 While students don’t need to know exactly what they want to do after high school, the closer they can get to figuring out their career path, the better prepared they will be.
Don’t neglect (忽视) to plan early. Students should become familiar with all the courses their school offers. 40 Students can also research what the basic requirements are for colleges they are interested in attending – something school counselors (咨询师) could help with.
It is wise to first consult your teachers and high school counselors on what courses are most appropriate for you at your high school. We hope that these suggestions help you.
A. Do keep your class schedule balanced.
B. Try talking with your English teacher.
C. Otherwise, they may miss out on classes they want to take later.
D. Choosing classes may seem difficult at first and you may be at a loss for how to start.
E. By doing so, students can decide what high school classes will best prepare them for their future path.
F. Focus on where your kids fit academically and don’t add pressure.
G. It is also necessary to always take into account the needs of the country.

But the surprising truth is, away from the cameras, they spend most of the time doing nothing at all. Are you kidding? Don't they have to look for food or shelters? They do, but they have a lot of time to rest. Wouldn't get boring just sitting around all day. Actually, some scientists think boredom has its benefits. Humans wouldn't have invented things without the curiosity from being bored. Sounds interesting. Maybe I should learn from you and try to slow down a little bit. I've spent all day dealing with all kinds of tasks. I'm tired. What have you been doing today? Oh, not much. Just sitting around doing nothing and relaxing. Lucky you. don't. You have work to do. I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting used to senior high school life. It is natural to feel worried in a new school, but things will soon improve.
Here are some suggestions. First, make a daily study plan and finish important tasks first. This will help you use your time well. Second, join a club or sports team. You can meet classmates who share your interests. Finally, be friendly and active. A smile, a simple “hello”, or an offer of help may start a new friendship.
I believe that with patience and courage, you will soon enjoy your new school life every day. Best wishes to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
