This year's summer vacation is one of my best memories. To make the most of the two-month
holiday,I took part in a volunteer project in Penang, the second biggest city in Malaysia.
第5页共10页
In the project called Aspire to Inspire, volunteers were asked to design workshops (to
make kids become more interested in science. This project was based on a survey which showed that
young kids in Malaysia were losing interest in science. Many kids now want to become
entrepreneurs (in the future instead of scientists or engineers.
To help kids enjoy science,we designed some interesting science experiments. We also taught
them how to use easy programming (tools and played brain training games with them.
To be honest, this project was a little hard for me.First,it was not easy for me to host a
workshop in English for hours. Before each workshop,I had to check many new words and practice
many times to speak clearly. What's more, the kids were active most of the time,so it was hard to
keep them focused in class.
Luckily,I was not alone. There were ten volunteers in our project.Although we came from
different countries,we worked with each other well.In order to help students focus on our lessons,
we make class rules. These rules were not as serious as school rules. They were more like some
games.Every time there was too much noise,we would play these games to calm them down. That
always worked.
This is my unforgettable summer vacation.Although I was worried a lot before going to
Malaysia,in the end,I brought back lots of wonderful memories.

In early September 2026,an unexpected sight in Shaoxing,Zhejiang Province, warmed people's
hearts across China. On a balcony beside Tanhua Bridge, seven large green gourds hung neatly from
a wooden frame ()They looked just like the seven magical gourd brothers from a famous
Chinese cartoon.Soon, the elderly man who grew them-75-year-old Chen Jin'ao-became
known online as "Gourd Grandpa".
Chen spent only 6 yuan buying three gourd seedlings in late March. He and his wife built a
wooden frame for the vines to climb. He never expected that his simple gardening would attract
tourists from all over the country.Every day, visitors would call out"Grandpa!"from across the
river, and Chen would wave back with a big smile, saying,"Welcome! The gourds will bring you
good luck!"
But behind the smiling face lies a sad truth.Twenty-five years ago,the couple lost their only
daughter in an accident. After that, they kept their door closed for a very long time and hardly went
out. They are part of a group known as "shidu"families-families who have lost their only child.

hearts."Although we don't have our own children, hearing everyone call us 'grandpa'and grandma'
really touches our hearts,"Chen's wife said with tears in her eyes."It was the visitors who opened

French filmmaker Francois Truffaut once said,"Every film about war ends up being pro-war."
He meant that war films often make fighting look exciting, even when they try to show that war is
bad.
This summer, however,a Chinese film tells a different story.Once Upon a Time in the Middle
East is about war,but food becomes a symbol of peace and love.
The film is about Xu Fu,a chef with 30 years of experience. He goes to a city in the Middle
East to work in a restaurant, hoping to pay off his debts ()At first, everything goes well, and
local people love his food. But then war breaks out.The restaurant becomes a safe place for a group
of orphans (L).Now the simple question"What can we eat?"is connected with a bigger one:
Who can live?”
"Food means happiness and peace,"said the director Wen Muye."In a war, people still need
three meals a day. What they really want is to eat with their families."Eating together,he says,
shows a simple hope:that peace will come back one day.
The director got the idea from a news story he read in 2017,about Chinese restaurant workers
who were caught in a war in the Middle East.He later visited camps for refugees (in Jordan
and talked with people who had lived through war.He said,"The story is set 20 years ago,but it is
not about any one war.It could have happened in the past,or it could be happening right now."
The film has received positive reviews(点评).“What I love is that no character tells you
what is right or wrong,"one viewer said."But after the film, you think about kindness, courage, and
treasuring what we have."
