Every autumn, I give my first-year college students an unusual writing task. I ask them to imagine that they are alone at an old telephone booth in the Mojave Desert. The night is quiet, and there is no one for miles. Suddenly, the phone rings. “Who is calling?” I ask. Students must explain not only who is calling but also why that person has chosen to call them.
The idea came from a real telephone booth that once stood in the California desert. Travelers visited it because anyone, from anywhere, might call. Although the booth has disappeared, I wondered whether an unexpected call could open an unexpected conversation. So I turned the idea into a writing task.
When I first used it, I expected many kinds of answers. Some students imagined conversations with historical figures; others received calls from grandparents they had never met or strangers asking for help. But one choice appeared again and again: students imagined receiving a call from an older version of themselves.
At first, I thought this simply happened by chance. Then the same pattern appeared semester after semester. Curious, I reread dozens of stories, paying attention not to who was calling but to what was being said. The future selves rarely talked about wealth, fame or great success. Instead, they offered words of comfort. They told their younger selves that failure would pass, loneliness would disappear gradually and life would become larger than today’s worries.
Then I understood. These imagined callers were not predicting the future. They were giving words to hopes the students already carried but had never expressed. By imagining someone who did not exist, students found a safe way to speak honestly about the lives they were living.
The telephone booth, then, is not really the destination. It is a doorway. Sometimes imagination does not take us away from reality; it helps us see it more clearly. The voice we are waiting to hear may have been our own all along.
4. What was the author’s main intention in designing this writing task?
A. To honor the desert booth. B. To promote travel in the desert.
C. To encourage imaginative writing. D. To analyse students’ inner thoughts.
5. What drew the author’s attention among students’ stories?
A. The same kind of caller. B. The absence of grandparents.
C. The fear of loneliness. D. The wide variety of answers.
6. Why did the author reread the students’ stories?
A. To find writing mistakes. B. To study the repeated pattern.
C. To select the best stories. D. To assess their writing skills.
7. What does the telephone booth represent in the text?
A. A doorway to escape reality. B. A chance to meet unexpected people.
C. A path to self-understanding. D. A symbol of unanswered questions.
C
Now, artificial intelligence (AI) is coming for the most attractive and exciting jobs. Stars may worry that AI is stealing their work and giving less talented performers the skills to take away their audience. In fact, the famous individuals complaining the most loudly about the new technology are the ones who stand to benefit the most. Far from weakening star power, AI will make the biggest celebrities bigger than ever by allowing them to be in all markets, in all types of media, at all times.
This isn’t the first time that technology has changed the rules of the fame game. People started talking about stars in the 18th century when the widespread access to reading materials made it possible to be truly famous within your lifetime. Film and radio originally seemed like a threat to stars, who worried their live performances would be devalued. In fact, those technologies started the era of the superstar, a term that caught on in the 1920s. A similar worry greeted the invention of television. But again, the new tech made the famous even more so, bringing them into every living room.
As AI-generated content floods into the entertainment business, artists and entertainment professionals are worrying once more that their fame will be reduced — and again, the outcome is likely to be the opposite. These opportunities come with conditions attached. Artists are right to worry about copyright, which must be protected if AI is not to become a legalised form of piracy (盗版). Until these copyright concerns are addressed, AI will be a legal Wild West.
The bigger question is how the age of the all-around superstar will appeal to audiences. The risk is boredom. AI is brilliant at remixing and repeating old material but falls short of creating exciting content that, for now, remains a human specialty.
Yet the entertainment market is highly self-correcting. Audiences have the power to turn a hot hit into a has-been one in an instant, as stars are all too aware. While AI-powered entertainment grows, consumers still seem to enjoy human drama. Sport, perhaps the most AI-proof, real-life event there is, has seen its value to media companies rise in recent years.
8. What is the primary concern of stars according to paragraph 1?
A. The decline in their popularity.
B. The improvement of audience’s taste.
C. The low level of their acting skills.
D. The ignorance of emerging technology.
9. Why does the author mention “film, radio and television” in paragraph 2?
A. To show the difficulties for the stars in the past.
B. To prove the techno-panic is common in history.
C. To confirm AI will surely come into every family.
D. To predict the trend of the technological development.
10. What is the author’s attitude to AI’s capacity of content creation?
A. Favourable. B. Unconcerned. C. Ambiguous. D. Skeptical.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. AI: A Pioneer in Entertainment Industry B. AI: Making Stars Worried or Talented?
C. AI: A Creator of Copyright Trouble D. AI: A Threat or A Booster to Stars?
D
Feeling thirsty? Drawing clean water directly from the air is possible, as even extremely dry regions contain some moisture (水汽). Over the past few years, researchers have created sponge-like (海绵状的) materials that make “atmospheric water harvesting” (AWH) possible by absorbing moisture. However, recovering the trapped water usually involves heat and a long wait. Most current systems rely on sunlight to warm these materials. This slow step can take many hours or even stretch into days.
To break this bottleneck, MIT engineers Ikra Shuvo and Svetlana Boriskina identified a much faster method. Instead of heating the water-absorbing materials to release water, they use high-frequency ultrasonic (超声波的) vibrations (震动) to shake the moisture loose. These sound waves are precisely tuned to break the weak bonds holding water molecules (分子) in place. This targeted disturbance creates enough force to release the water, shaking it out in small drops.
The new approach elegantly bypasses the materials’ unyielding nature. “Any material that is very good at absorbing water doesn’t want to part with it,” explains Boriskina. “So you normally need to put a lot of energy into pulling water out.” With ultrasound, this process is completely transformed. Lab tests show this method is about 45 times more efficient than traditional heating, freeing the trapped water in mere minutes.
This breakthrough overturns the assumption that AWH systems must absorb moisture overnight and depend on passive sunlight during the day. Powered by a small solar cell, which supplies electricity and also acts as a sensor to detect when the material is wet, the system activates automatically whenever enough water has gathered, allowing the setup to cycle day and night.
The project’s ultimate purpose goes far beyond laboratory efficiency. Boriskina notes it could provide a reliable source of drinking water for remote communities lacking freshwater. As global water crises worsen, this innovation offers a ray of hope, which might be a life-saving solution in the thinnest of air.
12. What does the underlined phrase “this bottleneck” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The lack of water in dry regions. B. The inefficiency of releasing water.
C. The huge cost of current devices. D. The poor performance of the materials.
13. In what way is the new AWH system different from the former one?
A. It gets rid of the moisture-absorbing materials.
B. It has been widely adopted in water-short areas.
C. It produces water independent of solar power.
D. It no longer has to absorb moisture overnight.
14. What makes the new device activate automatically?
A. A sensor detecting wetness. B. Continuous sunlight exposure.
C. A water cycling setup. D. Insufficient water absorption.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The need for further lab research.
B. The limits when used in poor areas.
C. The practical application potential.
D. The improvements over old systems.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and filmed Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages seemed to tell her that not many people valued handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper carried an article about his curved stairs. They were inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told, not just the work, but the story behind it,” Clara murmured.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Clara set about creating a new video.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】参考范文
Clara set about creating a new video. This time, her camera captured Timmy’s curved spoon and a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his wrinkled yet steady hands — shaping wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” With the video properly edited, she uploaded it online. Soon positive comments poured in. “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message from Timmy: “I’m coming to see you soon, back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture, the same grin as in that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked into the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “The spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.
