For years, Peter M. Williams spent his days, with a small magnifying glass (放大镜), bringing old, broken watches back to life. The master watchmaker never expected many people to care. But today, the 54-year-old Scotsman has over 2.5 million followers online by simply fixing watches.
Williams runs a small repair shop in Edinburgh. He started posting videos out of boredom. He takes apart disabled watches other shops have given up on. One video, restoring a 1940s military watch run over by a tractor, has been viewed over 80 million times.
“I call myself a ‘restoration artist’, but really, I’m just someone who likes to fix things,” Williams said. Unlike fast automated production lines, his work is very slow. “You aren’t just fixing a machine; you are repairing a memory,” he says. “A customer sent me his father’s watch last week. It hadn’t worked for 35 years. When I got the second hand moving again, he cried.”
Many people walk past broken watches in flea markets, seeing only waste. But Williams sees something they don’t. Williams success is part of the “mending movement” online, a stand against throwaway culture. While his shop mainly fixes expensive watches, he also supports repairing cheap but meaningful items. “People ask, ‘Is it worthwhile fixing a 50-year-old watch?’” I tell them, “Can you replace the memory of your wedding day?” he says.
Although his father was a clockmaker, Williams didn’t want to follow that math at first. He chose to study design instead. After losing his job during the 2008 financial crisis, he returned to the family workbench. “I don’t regret choosing a different path first,” he says. “This isn’t just a job; it’s my family’s heritage.”
He now sells restoration tool sets for beginners and offers online lessons to help keep watchmaking alive. “My goal is to make people understand that ‘broken’ doesn’t mean ‘garbage’,” he says. “With patience, anything can tick again.” As Williams likes to say, don’t judge a watch by its silence.
24. Why did Williams start posting videos?
A. To show off great skills. B. To pass the time.
C. To ease others’ boredom. D. To draw attention.
25. What does Williams mean by mentioning “repairing a memory”?
A. Old watches hold emotional value. B. Old watches improve memory.
C. Old watches keep valuable photos. D. Old watches have resale value.
26. How can we describe Williams’ career path?
A. Easy and promising. B. Smooth and profitable.
C. Risky yet successful. D. Winding yet meaningful.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. A watched pot never boils. B. Rome was not built in a day
C. Better to mend than to end. D. A penny saved is a penny earned.
C
Humans are not the animal world’s only fashion followers. Tit s can be one of them, too. A study by Sonja Wild and Lucy Aplin shows that, given the chance, they make their nests (巢穴) with this season’s must-have color.
Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin followed up on a study which noted that the blue tits preferred to put the same plants into their nests. This also suggested fashion-following — and it led Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin to imagine that birds were studying the nests of others and copying them.
The birds they followed carried instruments on them. That allowed researchers to follow a large number of tit s by their arrival at food dispensers (自动取物装置) throughout the woods.
One day in March 2021, Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin used five dispensers with wool rather than food. Each contained two colors — either orange and pink or blue and purple — but all were rigged to give only one of these. This remained so until at least one local nest was seen to include wool from a dispenser. At that moment, the other color was discovered, too. As a comparison, Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin set up four wool dispensers in a separate area, each providing two colors from the beginning.
Of 68 tits’nests,26 included wool from a dispenser. Of these, 18 were built after both colors had been gotten from all dispensers. Even so,10 of that 18 included only the color of wool first chosen by a nest makers. By contrast (相比之下) , all 8 nests with wool have mixed colors, which showed a clear difference in the record.
Tits, then, do seem to be “in fashion” when it comes to nest-building materials. Tits like those of the leaders of human fashions and it is worth more deep research.
28. Why are the same plants put into nests by the tits?
A. They want to keep warm. B. They find no other plants.
C. They are used to doing this. D. They want to beautify their nests.
29. What does the underlined word “rigged” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Refused. B. Warned. C. Forced. D. Arranged.
30. What method is mainly used in the experiment?
A. Testing colors. B. Observing activities. C. Comparing results. D. Checking numbers.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the research?
A. Disappointed. B. Supportive C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
D
Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination (歧视) is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes.
For a long time, professionals held the view that only obese (肥胖的) women would face an income cut, while men were hardly affected. To check whether this traditional idea is true, researchers from The Economist have carefully examined the personal information of over 23,000 full-time workers aged 25 to 54. The results show that being obese hurts both women’s and men’s income.
Generally, men’s BMI has nothing to do with their income, but things change with university degrees. For both sexes, better-educated workers are, in particular, treated unfairly for their weight. The higher their education, the bigger the pay cut. Obese men with an undergraduate degree earn 5% less, while those with a graduate degree earn 14%less. Obese women are worse off, with 12% and 19% less pay.
Different jobs also bring different results. In high-skill industries like healthcare and management, overweight workers are at a clear disadvantage. However, in some physical work industries such as construction and farming, obesity has not caused lower incomes. As a result, the total yearly loss from this discrimination in America may reach $70billion, more than twice the earlier guess.
To deal with this unfair phenomenon, several states and local governments in the United States have begun to consider related laws, and a new official rule was put into effect in New York City on November 22nd. Meanwhile, many experts have pointed out that discrimination against obese women has long existed in the United States and addressing this unfair phenomenon requires united efforts. Laws and rules could only be part of the solution.
32. What can we learn about weight discrimination in work?
A. It has been fully ignored. B. It affects both sexes equally.
C. It causes differences in pay. D. It has a greater impact on men.
33. According to the study, which group of obese workers is the least paid?
A. Men with a graduate degree. B. Men with an undergraduate degree.
C. Women with a graduate degree. D. Women with an undergraduate degree.
34. What do the experts suggest to solve the problem?
A. Better working conditions. B. Strict laws against unfairness.
C. Collective efforts from all sides. D. Positive attitude toward weight.
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Pay gap: an issue between sexes.
B. Pay gap: an unfair social phenomenon.
C. Weight discrimination: a threat to health.
D. Weight discrimination: a hidden cause of pay gap.
