Before words were words, a boy named Yes lived in a small village in a small kingdom. Yes was good at everything. He was the best, smartest and most liked person in his village.
Yes had a brother, and his name was No. No was jealous (嫉妒) of his brother, because he was not very good at anything himself. Whenever the villagers asked No for help, he refused because he didn’t like people very much. Whenever someone asked Yes for a favor, he would gladly help.
One day Yes and No’s father, Okay, went on a long journey and he left his two sons to take care of all the animals. Yes took good care of the goats, the deer, and the three-toed horse. No didn’t like it. So instead of helping his brother, No went down to the lake and threw rocks into the water.
A few days after his father left, Yes asked his brother to watch the three-toed horse while he went to find some food to eat. Instead of doing what Yes asked, No lay down, shut his eyes, and forgot about the horse.
It just so happened that the King had a personal road nearby, and he traveled on it often. So often that when the three-toed horse rushed onto the road, the King’s carriage (马车) was passing by and had to take a sudden turn in order not to hit it. The King was thrown from the carriage and fell to the ground and hurt himself.
The King asked why a three-toed horse had been allowed on his road and required all the villagers to explain it. Yes was always honest, so he told the King the whole story! The King thought for a moment, and then he came up with an idea that he was quite happy with. Yes and No were asked to work in the castle (城堡) as punishment (惩罚) for what they had done.

Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can be dangerous because other animals may hunt sleeping animals. To help them stay safe, animals have many different ways of sleeping. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They glide (滑行) for many hours without moving their wings up and down. Sometimes they sleep while they glide.
Dolphins sleep with just half their brain at a time. They must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphins can swim without sleep for a long time to stay safe. Ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Some fish make their own sleeping bags. They make a mucus cocoon (黏液囊) and sleep inside it. It also keeps other animals from smelling them. If an animal hits the bubble, the fish swims away quickly.
Horses often sleep standing up. Their legs lock in place so they don’t fall over. If a horse is lying down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing.
9. Why do animals have different ways of sleeping?

People in ancient (古代的) China worked long hours each day. To relax, they created many games. Some of them had a long history.
Chuiwan was one of the ball games in ancient China, which was very popular in the Song Dynasty. “Chui” means “hit” (击打) and “wan” means “ball”. This sport was similar to golf. On a large field, the players were divided into two groups. Usually there were 2 to 10 people in each group. Everyone had three chances to hit the ball into holes (洞) with a stick. Only when three hits into the hole were made did the player win the point (分).
First recorded 2,000 years ago, cuju is known as the earliest form of football. The ball was made of leather (皮革) on the outside and filled with rice bran (米糠) inside. As a fun and relaxing game, cuju was used in the army (军队) to train soldiers. Its rules were similar to football’s. Each team usually had 12 or 16 players. No hands were allowed. Only feet and the head could be used. The ball should be hit into the opposite goal.
In the Western Zhou Dynasty, archery was an important part of study for a gentleman. At the age of 15, they began learning shooting (射击). The most famous match was Grand Archery. It was held by the emperor. The players bowed (鞠躬) before shooting and drank together after.
