I’m Savannah and I remember beginning to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back to was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of being positive but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration (移民) officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences, I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
4. What did Savannah miss most about home when leaving for America?
A. Her dear friends and relatives. B. The radio programme for pupils.
C. The country she was leaving. D. The places she was familiar with.
5. What was Savannah’s attitude to her life changes in New York?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Desperate.
6. Why was Savannah increasingly responsible in her family?
A. For her family moved more frequently. B. For her mother ended up in divorce.
C. For her English was better than others. D. For she disagreed with her stepfather.
7. What does Savannah think about her future life?
A. Her future will be loaded with more troubles. B. It will be difficult to learn to become mature.
C. There will be more good days than expected. D. Good things will happen if she keeps trying.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

Humour is the most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, and getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it is the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss sensitive subjects because a serious dialogue may start a riot. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
Humour is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating (升级) into a big deal. Recently a neighbor of mine had a quarrel with his wife as she drove him to the airport. Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call. “Person-to-person for Mrs.I.A.Pologize.” intoned the operator. “That’s spelled ‘P’ as in...” In a twinkling (眨眼间), the whole day changed from bad to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist (赞助) in a major charity drive. Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen...and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tight rope walker, brought in a large roast turkey; he successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing (回摆) threw the turkey onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted; the guests staring at their plates. Moving only her head, the hostess looked at her son,“No harm, Daniel,” she said, “just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen...” She enunciated (发音) clearly so he would think about what she was saying, “and bring in the other one.”
A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a laughter.
8. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Humour is the key to success in our work and lives.
B. Humour enables us to deal with difficult situations effectively.
C. Humour is the best way to criticize someone without losing his face.
D. Humour makes fun of any difficult situation.
9. Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage?
A. Comedians on TV are believed to have done a lot in making people more tolerant (容忍) of racial and religious differences.
B. To make up differences, humour is the most acceptable and effective means.
C. People often turn to humorous ways when meeting with difficult situations because of its effectiveness.
D. Only by adopting the means of humour can one succeed in some jobs.
10. What caused the roast turkey to drop onto the floor?
A. The backward movement of the door. B. The son’s rude behavior.
C. Someone happened to be at the door. D. The bird raised by the family.
11. What do you think would probably be the result if the hostess got angry and scolded the son?
A. It would make the embarrassing situation worse.
B. The son would refuse to serve the guests any more.
C. The son would talk back and make the mother more angry.
D. The guests would leave before the dinner was over.
B 9. C 10. A 11. A

A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may speed up brain aging and increase the risk of dementia (痴呆) or cognitive ability (认知能力) decline The findings highlight the importance of maintaining good health to prevent infections, especially among the elderly and those at risk for dementia.
The study examined aging male mice and found that occasional experiences of moderate inflammation (发炎) , such as inflammation caused by the flu or a seasonal head cold, led to neurons functioning more poorly and communication not working properly.
“We were interested in asking whether differences in infection experience could help explain, at least in part, the differences in frequency of dementia we saw in the population,” said lead author Elizabeth Engler-Chiurazzi, PhD. “The mice we were studying were healthy adults approaching middle age, and yet, when exposed to occasional inflammation, they remembered less and their neurons functioned more poorly.”
This study is the first to use mice to study repeated, occasional infections and examine the long-term consequences on brain function and health.
Humans often experience infections and inflammation at much higher rates than laboratory mice. But since that neurons function more poorly were observed in mice after five occasional inflammatory treatments, the decline in cognitive ability in humans may be more severe.
“Our mice only experienced occasional sickness-like inflammation a few times, so the fact that we observed problems was surprising,” Engler-Chiurazzi said. “The effects were subtle, but that’s why I found these results meaningful: in humans, cognitive problems from a similar number of inflammatory experiences might not be easy to notice in their daily lives but could have had effects that built up over time and negatively influenced the aging brain.”
The findings may have important influences on standard of care regarding how infections are dealt with among the elderly and those at risk for dementia. Going forward, Engler-Chiurazzi said more work needs to be done to understand why infections affect the brain and how to mitigate those effects. In addition, she hopes future studies will look at whether weaker populations face a higher risk of neurological effects. “The biggest gain from this research, in our opinion, is the importance of staying as healthy and infection-free as possible,” she said.
12. The researchers conduct the study in order to ________.
A. highlight the frequent illness is harmless to human beings.
B. identify whether the repeated inflammation will cause cognitive problems.
C. explain the adult male mice are more likely to have poor cognitive ability.
D. show cognitive ability decline from a few inflammatory experiences is easy to notice.
13. What can we learn about the study?
A. The brains of these mice were unaffected by the disease.
B. The infections have little influence on the aging brain.
C. Humans will suffer even more severe cognitive ability decline because of the frequent illness.
D. Researchers used to examine the influences of repeated infections on brain function.
14. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. relieve B. strengthen C. promote D. emphasize
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The standard of care has been revealed.
B. Mice will suffer from poor cognitive ability by flu.
C. We human beings should stay as healthy and infection-free as possible.
D. The connection between frequent illness and dementia has been discovered.
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第三段“We were interested in asking whether differences in infection experience could help explain, at least in part, the differences in frequency of dementia we saw in the population.(我们感兴趣的是,感染经历的差异是否至少能在一定程度上解释我们在人群中看到的痴呆症发病率的差异。)”
根据第五段“Humans often experience infections and inflammation at much higher rates than laboratory mice. But since that neurons function more poorly were observed in mice after five occasional inflammatory treatments, the decline in cognitive ability in humans may be more severe.(人类感染和发炎的频率往往比实验室老鼠高得多。但是,由于在五次偶尔的炎症治疗后观察到小鼠的神经元功能较差,人类的认知能力下降可能更严重。)”可知,由于频繁生病,人类的认知能力下降会更严重。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第七段“Going forward, Engler-Chiurazzi said more work needs to be done to understand why infections affect the brain and how to mitigate those effects.(Engler-Chiurazzi说,未来还需要做更多的工作来了解为什么感染会影响大脑,以及如何_____这些影响。)” 故选A。
根据第一段“A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may speed up brain aging and increase the risk of dementia (痴呆) or cognitive ability (认知能力) decline.(塔兰特大学的一项研究表明,频繁生病可能会加速大脑衰老,增加患痴呆症或认知能力下降的风险。)”

根据前文“The most important element of emotional maturity is taking responsibility for your own emotions and actions. It means neither blaming yourself for what you cannot control nor losing emotional balance. (情绪成熟最重要的要素是对自己的情绪和行为负责。这意味着既不因为无法控制的事情责怪自己,也不失去情绪平衡。)”可知,前文重点强调“对可控之事负责,不对不可控之事自责”,空处应承接上文,进一步明确责任的边界。E选项“Assume responsibility only for what lies within your control. (只对自己能控制的事情承担责任)符合语境。故选E项。
【17题详解】
本段小标题为“Admit mistakes when you are wrong. (犯错时承认错误)”,前文提到“Emotionally mature people do not blame others for their own mistakes. They are responsible for their actions, learn from mistakes, and accept feedback objectively. (情绪成熟的人不会把自己的错误归咎于他人。他们对自己的行为负责,从错误中吸取教训,客观地接受反馈)”,说明情绪成熟者面对错误时的态度是负责而非推诿。空处应延续这一态度,说明其后续反应。C选项“Hence, they do not respond by attacking back. (因此,他们不会以反击作为回应。)”符合语境。故选C项。
【18题详解】
此处需为段落小标题,需概括本段核心内容且格式与其他小标题一致(祈使句)。根据后文“Emotionally mature people understand their emotional needs. It is important to take care of others’ feelings but it does not mean they should totally abandon their own feelings. The key is to stay balanced and to attend to own emotional needs when it is necessary. If a person does not respect his own feelings, it is easy for him to be influenced by others and become miserable. (情绪成熟的人了解自己的情感需求。关心他人的感受固然重要,但这并不意味着他们应该完全忽视自己的感受。关键在于保持平衡,并在必要时关注自身的情感需求。如果一个人不尊重自己的感受,就很容易受到他人的影响,进而陷入痛苦之中)”可知,本段核心是“关注并尊重自身的情感需求,而非完全忽略自我”。B选项“Respect your own feelings and needs. (尊重自己的感受和需求。)”为祈使句,精准概括了本段主题,适合作小标题。故选B项。
【19题详解】
本段小标题为“Don’t play victim. (不要扮演受害者)”以及后文提到“Whenever they get setbacks in life, they view it as their own responsibility to improve themselves. (无论何时在生活中遇到挫折,他们都认为提升自己是自己的责任。)”可知,进一步说明情绪成熟的人对自身生活的责任意识。G选项“Emotionally mature people take full responsibility for their own lives. (情绪成熟的人对自己的生活负完全责任。)”直接呼应小标题“不扮演受害者”,且为后文“视挫折为自我提升的责任”提供了观点支撑,符合语境。故选G项。
【20题详解】
本段围绕“Define and set boundaries. (明确并设定边界)”展开,前文提到“Emotionally mature people understand their standpoint. They know what they want in life and they also made a conscious decision on the things that they do not want. When things beyond their boundaries happen, they can detect it right away, deal with it accordingly and won’t let it destroy their self-esteem.. (情绪成熟的人清楚自己的立场。他们知道自己在生活中想要什么,也会清醒地决定自己不想要什么。当发生超出自身边界的事情时,他们能立刻察觉,并采取相应的方式处理,不会让这些事损害自己的自尊。)”可知,空处应总结“设定边界”带来的积极作用。D选项“This gives them huge power over emotional control. (这赋予他们强大的情绪控制能力。)”中的“This”指代前文“明确立场、设定并处理边界”的行为,符合语境。故选D项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the heart of the busy city of New York, where the sounds of rushing cars never stopped, lived a sixteen-year-old girl named Lisa. Unlike her classmates, who were often keen on the latest technology, Lisa had a preference for knitting (编织).
Lisa’s love for knitting was deeply influenced by her mother, who owned a skilled and creative touch with needles. Her mother’s passion for knitting and generous spirit of helping others always inspired Lisa to follow in her footsteps and take up knitting as a meaningful hobby.
Lisa was really good at knitting. She liked to make scarves (围巾), gloves, hats and mini bags for her friends as well as her relatives. Her hats were created in a variety of styles and colors, each one unique and full of personality. Whether it was a mini bag or a classic scarf, each knitting work was a carefully crafted masterpiece and a unique gift full of love and warmth. With beauty and practicality, Lisa’s creations never failed to impress.
One freezing morning in the peak of winter, the city had just been blanketed by a snowstorm that had left many, particularly the homeless, in desperate situation. As Lisa made her way to school, she noticed a shaking figure under the bridge near her school. It was a homeless old man she often saw on her way, but today he looked extremely miserable (可怜的). His face was half-hidden under a piece of worn cloth that hardly served as protection against the cold. Touched by the sight. Lisa decided to give her scarf to the homeless old man. She approached, handing the scarf to him.
“For me?” the man asked, his eyes widened with surprise.
“Yes! I thought it might help you against the cold,” Lisa said, her breath visible in the cold air.

Led by Lisa, Knitting Club was started in her school.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The old man wrapped the scarf, immediately feeling a bit warmer. His trembling fingers traced the intricate patterns, and tears welled up in his eyes. “Thank you, young lady,” he whispered hoarsely. “No one’s shown me kindness like this in years.” Lisa smiled, but her heart ached seeing his threadbare gloves. Suddenly, an idea struck her — what if she could knit for more people like him? That afternoon, she rushed home and rummaged through her yarn stash, determined to turn her hobby into something bigger.
Led by Lisa, Knitting Club was started in her school. At first, only a few curious classmates joined, but soon word spread about their mission to craft winter gear for the homeless. Lisa taught them basic stitches during lunch breaks, their needles clicking in unison. By December, they’d donated fifty handmade items to shelters. The local newspaper featured their story, inspiring other schools to follow suit. What began as one girl’s quiet act of compassion grew into a citywide movement, proving that even the smallest stitches could weave a warmer world.

C
D
