For 22 years, Nan Rendong devoted himself to a single dream: building a giant “eye” in the mountains of Guizhou. As the chief scientist of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), he undertook one of the most challenging projects in modern astronomy.
When the project was first proposed in 1994, many experts were skeptical. The technology was ambitious, the budget was tight, and some doubted whether China could build something larger than any existing radio telescope. Nan, however, refused to give up. He travelled around the karst landscapes of Guizhou for more than a decade, examining hundreds of depressions, until he found the perfect site in Pingtang County.
Construction began in 2011. To cut costs considerably, Nan and his team redesigned the support system, using light-weight cables instead of heavy steel structures. “We have to make every yuan count,” he once told reporters. Sadly, Nan passed away in 2017, just months before the telescope was completed. When FAST was officially opened in 2020, it was immediately regarded as a pioneering achievement in world astronomy.
Today, this “Sky Eye” continues to scan the universe, and the data it collects has already led to new discoveries. As one scientist commented, “Nan didn’t just build a telescope; he built a bridge to the stars for all of us.”

A. They thought it was too ambitious for China then.

2. What did Nan do to find the site for FAST?
A. He studied maps in the office for a decade.
B. He examined hundreds of depressions in Guizhou.
C. He asked foreign experts to choose the site.
D. He followed other countries’ site-selection models.
3. What does the underlined word “considerably” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Gradually. B. To a large degree. C. Surprisingly. D. Technically.
4. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. FAST was completed thanks to foreign technology.
B. Nan lived to see the opening of FAST.

A1. 1. committed 2. resources 3. regarded 4. Struck 5. engaged 6. devotion
解析:第1题考查 commit oneself to doing sth.
A3. 1. committed herself to 2. Due to 3. gained recognition 4. undertake 5. advocate
B1. 1. regarded 2. Graduating 3. where 4. Struck 5. actively 6. making 7. Thanking 8. devotion 9. recognition 10. doing
被动语态 be regarded as;2. 过去分词作状语(状语从句省略:When she was struck…);5.
B2. 1—4 A B B C
① the technology was ambitious / some doubted whether China could → A项 too ambitious for China then(同义改写)
② examining hundreds of depressions → B项 examined hundreds of depressions in Guizhou(动词形态转换,信息不变)
③ cut costs considerably+using light-weight cables instead of heavy steel → B项 To a large degree(据语境推断词义)
④ continues to scan the universe / led to new discoveries / a bridge to the stars → C项 his dream continues to benefit astronomy(概括改写)
干扰项错因:1题D偷换对象(怀疑项目可行性→怀疑个人能力);2题A曲解(实地考察曲解为办公室看地图),C、D无中生有;3题A、C、D均不符合 “大幅降低成本”语境;4题B反说(原文 passed away before the opening),A无中生有,D曲解(cheap≠costs cut considerably)。
The person I admire most is Tu Youyou. Often regarded as a symbol of Chinese science, she committed herself to medical research despite limited resources. After examining hundreds of ancient recipes, she and her team discovered artemisinin, which has saved millions of lives. Her achievement gained global recognition—she was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2015. What strikes me most is her modesty: she never stopped exploring traditional Chinese medicine. Her story tells me that commitment can make ordinary people do extraordinary things.
评价要点:内容覆盖 “简介—原因—影响” 三要点;词块使用≥3个(regarded as, committed herself to, despite limited resources, gained recognition, was awarded, strikes);有同义替换(如 a symbol of Chinese science, saved millions of lives)。
1. The tourists looked at the murals in the Mogao Grottoes with admiration.
2. The village committee decided to award the rural teacher a medal (to honour her devotion).
3. When (she was) told that she had won the award, she was too excited to speak. / It struck her that she had won the award, and she was too excited to speak.
